Pastor’s Corner for Sunday, May 12, 2019

SPRING CLEAN-UP– Saturday, May 11 – 9-Noonis the annual Spring Clean-Up day.  It takes a lot of work to keep the grounds of this church looking as great as they do. Trees need to be trimmed, outside windows need to be washed, the mail box needs to be cleaned and painted, and that is just a few starter projects. Donuts and coffee will be available for all workers.

People of Shiloh, Mother’s Day is both a hard day and a joyous day. So many people come from so many places. May this prayer from us peace this Mother’s Day.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler #loveBillings

O God, the commercials, cards and gifts of this Sunday are a reminder to honor the mothers in our lives. A day set aside to celebrate mothers is a lovely thing, and yet we recognize it as an echo, a single skipped stone, of the kind of family life to which you call us here.
In our broken world, this single day, these reminders for some are not blessings but pain or longing. May these few words help us intercede for someone we know who may be suffering this week.
For those who are sorrowing, raw and tender this week, we pray:
…for those who’ve suffered the loss of their mothers through death; Lord, please bring them your comfort
…for those estranged from their mothers through family division, mental illness or strife; Lord, please salve their wounds and bring your healing
…for those who are losing their mothers by degrees through disease; Lord, please measure extra grace to parent and child alike as the roles reverse
…for those who never knew their mothers; Lord, please reveal yourself to them at every point of abandonment, longing and need as El Shaddai
…for those who have lost a child; Lord, please have mercy on them as they daily bear this searing pain
…for those who are riding the roller-coaster of infertility; Lord, please revive their hope and bless them with new life
…for those who ache to become mothers, but find themselves without a mate again this year; Lord, please draw near to them, and help them draw near to you as they wait and hope
…for those whose children have chosen a prodigal path; Lord, please grace these parents to wait together with you for their children’s return home
…for those whose children are living, working and serving in distant lands; Lord, please keep them safe, and keep our hearts at peace
…for those who have a full and happy family life; Lord, thank you for this witness, and give them  an extra chair at their table waiting for the lonely to fill it
…for those who, in their pain, have felt abandoned and undefended by you; Lord, please comfort them…and let them recognize that you are near at all times
In the name of the Father of the fatherless, the Bridegroom of the widow, and the Companion of the lonely, I pray. Amen.

This Spring we will be entering a time of learning about our neighbors. How to be a good neighbor, and how Christ calls us to this.  We hope you will join us for this sermon series of walking with the disciples as they learn to neighbor and call people to be neighbors in return.

“Every human being has value. This is the basis of all healthy relationships. Through living each day as it is given to me, I’ve learned that. It cannot be “taught,” but it can be “caught” from those who live their lives right along with us. What a privilege to be able to look for the good in our neighbor!”– Fred Rogers

COMMUNITY GARDEN 2019– As the snow melts, we are beginning plans to have a Community Garden again the year.  There is a large area used to grow produce for the Free Store and Food Bank.  We also have 18 individual spots available (7 have already been reserved).  Garden spots are $50.00 each.
LAWN MOWING HELPERS NEEDEDAlong with gardens comes the grass. There is a sign-up sheet in the lobby on the table marked “Volunteer for Shiloh.”  Please help out this summer by signing up to mow.
FREE STORE– We continue to be very busy at the Free Store.  On May 4, 80 families shopped with us, of which 19 were first time shoppers.  Assuming there are at least two people per family (a conservative assumption), 160 people were in our shopping area during 2 ½ hours we were open for shopping (10am to 12:30 pm).  Needless to say many donated items filled a need in our community! An additional bonus for the shoppers is the free hot meal served in the basement.  Without the donated items this 8thyear of the Free Store would not be happening!  Thank you! Also thank-you to the many volunteers whose loyalty and commitment is so appreciated and so needed.
BEING GOOD STEWARDS OF OUR PLANET– We are trying to recycle all we can.  We also have received a mulching bin for the gardens.  Lately, we have noticed a large amount of plastic water bottles in the recycle bins.  Therefore, upon request, the Trustees have purchased an upgraded water cooler with a bottle filling station.  We will no longer provide bottled water in the refrigerator.  We encourage you to bring your own bottle to fill if you have one. If you don’t have one, we are working on ideas for making the best use of this new resource.  If you know someone who needs a used water fountain, please contact the office.

If you appreciate what Shiloh does, please consider giving to us financially.  You can give online at  Thank you for supporting our work.
