Blessing of the Backpacks – Pastor’s Corner for Sunday August 25, 2019

Click here to watch a video to prepare your heart and mind for our service Sunday.
People of Shiloh,

Education has long been a centerpiece of the Methodist tradition.  Going back to John and Charles Wesley who received a strong education from their mother Susanna.  Susanna had an incredible education background for a woman in her era.  Susanna knew several languages, knew the Bible well, and passed on this vast knowledge to her children.   In Montana, Methodists have long worked for education, one great example is the founding of the college that is now Rocky Mountain College.  As Methodist people we believe that people can change the world when empowered through a good education and with the support of a Holy Spirit filled community.

In this spirit, it is important for us to continue learning how we can help our community support education.  The best way for us to do this is by learning to be missional and connecting with our schools.

miss-ion-al
Adverb/Adjective
  1. Describing an act of sharing God’s love in the community.
  2. Existing as part of the above act.

Today, during worship we are going to be missional in several ways.

  1. We are going to bless the backpacks of our students heading back to school and supplies we send to the schools.  We want our children to know that we care about their education and that we are supporting them as they learn.
  2. Second, we will take a student offering to support students through scholarships administered by our United Methodist connection.  This shows we support people connecting with knowledge in our global community.
  3. Finally, we will be invited to write letters to educators and staff in our schools.  A form letter can be found at http://www.shilohbillings.church/teacher-letters/

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Tyler

Pastor’s Corner for Sunday, August 18, 2019 – Praise by the Pool

This Sunday 8am Worship is at Shiloh,  10am Worship is at Rose Park for Praise by the Pool
People of Shiloh,

In August, I’m inviting you to participate in a One Month Challenge a practice of picking up new habits, and leaving behind unhelpful ones.  I invite you to go to shilohbillings.church/one-monthand print the challenge card or get one at church the next two Sundays. Then, put it somewhere you will see it and spend just a bit of time each day on your personal journey with God.  It will take commitment to build the habits, but when have we shied away from doing something hard.

I find that for me new practices are hard to get going, I have to be honest I have only done our one-month challenge 1-3 days a week.  Grace in practice means doing the best you can and growing from there.  I encourage you this week to take up the challenge if you have not had a chance, and see what it does for you personally. Learning to let go of things that don’t help us, pick up new habits, ask for help, and being grateful can transform how we see God in our daily life.  Give yourself a moment to try and pick up the practice one more time this week.

Wherever summer has taken or will take you, I hope you will spend some part of it with us.  We’ve planned some exciting events and our quality worship experiences will continue throughout August and please mark your calendar for our Welcome Home Sunday, September 8.  Thank you again for being a part of this church family and for the gifts you’ve already given.  Each and every person adds something important to who we are.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor’s Corner for Sunday, August 11, 2019

People of Shiloh:
4 years ago I shared this prayer from Pastor Kelly Addy of Bigfork UMC, following a shooting at Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.  With the recent shootings in our country, it seems we have not gotten any closer to finding a way to escape this violence.  I pray we say this prayer again, to remind us that our prayers need to call us to change those things that are continuing to create an opportunity for these awful events to continue.  May this prayer embody our sorrow and our need for God at this moment.

Dear Lord,
We come to you as your children, seeking your wisdom and patience in the midst of our bewilderment. You have made humankind so magnificently and so powerfully, but we lose our way before we can arrive at the kind of love with which you made us. We know it is there because we are the work of your hands and we ask your gentle hand to guide us to it and place it at the center of all things and nations, and races and peoples.

We gathered to learn of the riches of your abundant love, which overcomes all the violence the world, can muster. And then shots rang out across this great land of hope and freedom, infecting people with fear and suspicion.

We turn to you and to you alone, as we cry out once again that we are love because you are love and we are from you. How can anyone hope to love anyone if they do not love everyone? How can anyone seek to overcome darkness with darkness? How can anyone hate anyone without hating everyone?

Turn our hearts to neither the left nor the right, but only to you. We read your Word and hear your love in it even when people in (California, Ohio and Texas are dying for it.)

We lift up those people who have died, may their names be reminders of the need for us to change our world.

We pray for peace. We lift up those who suffer violence anywhere in the world and we do not look down on them, but up to you.

Give us your peace. Give us your love. Give us your will, abundantly as we trudge onward and upward and homeward together to you.

And when we go back into the world from this place may our light so shine that other would see the Christ in us and be led in the Way, by the Truth, to the Life Everlasting. Amen.

As we enter this next week, I invite us to hold this prayer in our hearts.  May our life be a prayer that our world might see a day when racial violence, mass shootings and systemic hatred are no more.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Tyler
Reminder that on Sunday August 18, next Sunday we have a regular 8am service at Shiloh.  Our second service is at Rose Park at 10am, Praise by the Pool.
We invite you to watch this video to learn more about what is coming up in worship this week.
The United Methodist Church has been in upheaval over understandings of Human Sexuality.  I invite you as Pastor to watch this video by Lovett H. Weems Jr. who is the director of the Lewis Center for Leadership at Wesley Seminary.  It is the best overview of our current challenges I have seen.

People of Shiloh,

We run on your faithfulness!!
Thank you so much for being part of the Shiloh United Methodist Church community. In the 22 months I’ve been blessed to be your Pastor, it is remarkable to me how much we have done to help share the gospel with our community.  Additionally, I am thankful for how many of you have supported me and my family. This is truly a special church that knows how to care for one another and cares about our community.

If you find yourself away from us for part of August, please know you can stay connected with us.  The best way is through our Podcasts.  These are audio recordings of the Sunday morning message.  You can listen from your phone, tablet or computer by visiting shilohbilling.church/sermonslisten/.

I believe my most important job is to help people on their faith journey. In August, I’m inviting you to participate in a One Month Challenge a practice of picking up new habits, and leaving behind unhelpful ones.  I invite you to go to shilohbillings.church/one-monthand print the challenge card or get one at church the next two Sundays.

There are also instructions on how to assemble these kits.  Please bring your assembled kits, or just bring the items for kit(s) to the church and we will get them to the UMCOR Depot in Salt Lake City.  Another way to help is packing hygiene kits. If you want to join other Methodists around Billings come to Grace UMC August 12 at 6 pm. Bring a potluck dish and supplies for hygiene kits.

SEWING TEACHER AND QUILTER NEEDEDThe Women’s Shelter has a sewing room but they have no one to teach the women how to sew.  The shelter manager would love any support they can get because the women love learning to sew.  If you are interested, you can contact either the volunteer coordinator at the shelter or the shelter manager at the Women’s Shelter. Also, if you quilt, we have all the pieces for another Shiloh UMC hand quilt.  If you can help, please contact the office.

If you appreciate what Shiloh does, please consider giving to us financially.  You can give online at https://www.shilohbillings.church/give/  Thank you for supporting our work.
