Newsletter – August 2019

People of Shiloh,

We run on your faithfulness!!

Thank you so much for being part of the Shiloh United Methodist Church community. In the 22 months I’ve been blessed to be your Pastor, it is remarkable to me how much we have done to help share the gospel with our community. Additionally, I am thankful for how many of you have supported me and my family. This is truly a special church that knows how to care for one another and cares about our community.

If you find yourself away from us for part of August, please know you can stay connected with us. The best way is through our Podcasts. These are audio recordings of the Sunday morning message. You can listen from your phone, tablet or computer by visiting shilohbilling.church/sermonslisten/.

I believe my most important job is to help people on their faith journey. In August, I’m inviting you to participate in a One Month Challenge a practice of picking up new habits, and leaving behind unhelpful ones.  I invite you to go to shilohbillings.church/one-month and print the challenge card or get one at church the next two Sundays. Then, put it somewhere you will see it and spend just a bit of time each day on your personal journey with God. It will take commitment to build the habits, but when have we shied away from doing something hard?

Wherever summer takes you, I hope you will spend some part of it with us. We’ve planned some exciting events and our quality worship experiences will continue throughout August.  Please mark your calendar for our Welcome Home Sunday, September 8. Thank you again for being a part of this church family and for the gifts you’ve already given. Each and every person adds something important to who we are.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Rev. Tyler Amundson  #LoveBillings

Pastor’s Corner for Sunday, July 28, 2019

Today’s message is from Joni Oswald one of the leaders in our congregation. I am thankful for her message and her leadership to help us follow God’s call here at Shiloh.  I pray you take the time to read her message.
-Pastor Tyler
Greetings People of Shiloh:

This year marks my third year at Shiloh UMC and my first as a new leader of the Welcoming Team.  When Pastor Tyler enthusiastically approached me about this opportunity, I of course, thought that I was too “new” to the church and didn’t know everything I should know to be successful. Sounded kind of hard too.  My first inclination was to say NO! Sound familiar?

There are stories in our Bible about many leaders who thought they just didn’t have the skills needed to take on something new and maybe something scary.  God makes it easy for us. “Follow Me”. “Trust me”. “I will not forsake you, ever”. Have a little faith, will ya?

Pastor Tyler provided me with a lot of reading material, encouragement and asked me to pray about the position before making the decision.  We met several times and after prayer and reflection, I said yes and feel so blessed to be a part of this Welcoming Team.

What an important role a Pastor has as a counselor and educator and in my case, a cheerleader.  Just one of many responsibilities necessary to lead a church. I am thankful that we have a Pastor who looks outside the box and finds opportunity in the many challenges we are facing in our world, our church and our denomination.  Pastor Tyler challenges our thinking and asks the hard questions about the present and future of Shiloh.

We have the opportunity to thrive in these times of challenge and change by loving God and one another.    “If God is for us, who can be against us?”  Romans: 8:31

The vision statement for Shiloh is, “Peace, Hope, Love, Joy – Every One, Every Day, Every Where.”  People of Shiloh, this is how we show the world and each other how to live in Christ.  God is calling You-Say YES!!

Blessings to You and Yours, Joni Oswald

Pastor’s Corner for Sunday, July 21, 2019

People of Shiloh,

In the Methodist system for Pastors, we are assigned a year at a time.  In general, those assignments or “appointments” start July 1 and continue for 1 year. Each year the Bishop has the choice to reappoint a pastor to their current community or to assign them to a new community.  I am pleased to announce that as of July 1, 2019 I have been re-appointed to serve the people of Billings alongside Shiloh United Methodist Church.

Over the past year we have accomplished a lot of things, we have seen over 600+ people in our space between and Easter Egg Hunt and Trunk or Treat, we welcomed more new members into our church in 2018 than we had in the any other year in the past 10 years, we have formed community partnerships to help us accomplish our calling, we have studied scripture, learned spiritual practice, and we have continued to make a difference in our community through sandwich making, the Free Store, the Community Garden and so many other missions.

It is a privilege to serve each and every one of you, even in the hard moments. We have lost more dear saints of this congregation who have passed away this year.  Each of those deaths is getting harder for me, because when you pastor people you begin to care for them dearly and each loss gets more difficult.

This next year will be full of opportunity and challenges for us all. We continue to see new faces in worship each week and I am excited to have a new welcoming team developing ways to connect them to us.  Our denomination as a whole is still in disagreement and we will feel the impact of those changes in the coming year.  However, I know one thing to be true, “God keeps appearing at Shiloh.”  God is showing up so that people like you and I, and people we have yet to meet may experience the love of God.

Enthusiastic Peace,
 Pastor Tyler

Pastor’s Corner for Sunday, July 14, 2019

People of Shiloh,

This summer as we study scripture, I think it is important that we take time to consider how we study scripture as a people of God.  Scripture for faith communities is not meant to be a stagnate doctrine, but living text.  Communities have passed this text along to us knowing that it can hand us what we need for the modern era, not so we can maintain the rules of past.  In worship I have shared that our Bible was not put together until nearly 400 CE(AD) and even then it was not in English.  Meaning the Bible many of us read has been translated by a person or a group of people and has been moving through the work of living human beings into what we have today.

“The New Testament was written in everyday street language,” Peterson said. “Words make something. They don’t just say something. … You are free not to study the Bible but to enter into it, to let it become part of you, — not deciding what you need, but receiving what’s there.” – Eugene Peterson

The early Christians would have had fragments of our Bible, maybe a gospel in their care, some epistles from Paul or others, perhaps a Torah, and some ancient writings from Israel’s prophets.  Somehow still the Holy Spirit and the faith of Christ shown through them in how they lived.  As a pastor of a congregation I trust that if people live in community, share God’s peace and love with each other, and read their text together that the Holy Spirit will guide them to find ways to offer God’s life giving grace to strangers and the community around them.  This is the call of the Christian journey and for us.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler
