Pastor’s Corner – Sunday, January 20, 2019

Click here to watch a video invite to prepare us for worship.
Light is a such an important part of our faith and I love our church building for how much natural light it allows in.  Light helps us to see clearly, it is an image of God brining clarity, and opening insight for new direction in our life. Sometimes it can be good to also sit in darkness to know what we are accepting when we allow light into our lives. My hope is this current sermon series allows us time to see where God has shown light for how to live as Christians, but also gives us a glimpse of why we are called to accept the light and walk out of darkness.

In the theme of light I also want to lift up our Trustees work of replacing all of our lighting with LEDs.  They have been working hard this year to complete this work and I am proud as your Pastor to announce that our Trustees have accomplished this goal.  This is good news for a few reasons:  1. Our building and parking lot are well lit at night, and our space is bright.  2. We are saving costs on electricity.  3. We are being good stewards of our resources. If you see one of our trustees around, tell them thanks for the light, Tobie Stapleton, Ed Heidrich, Buddy Kastrop, Chris Munson, or Kent Thompson.

As we continue to learn these 5 practices to experience joy in real life, I hope you find ways to live them out in your life. Jesus calls us to forgive, be forgiven and experience connection with our God.  May you feel this grace in your life.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

FREE STORE STATISTICS– 2018 was a very busy year for the Free Store.  1,412 family visits happened, but even more amazing was that on seven different Saturdays, 70+ families visited.  The only other time we had 70+ was in 2013 and that was only once.  Even more telling is our average number served per Saturday was 53 in 2017 and 56 in 2018.
This mission continues to make such a difference. However without your support of time and/or donations (goods or money) many in our community would be living with oot what the resources the Free Store provides. THANK YOU. Co-directors: Dale Francetich and Peg Parker.

TEXAS UMVIM TRIP– Sally McConnell and Nancy Flint are leading an UMVIM work team to the Texas coast to do hurricane Harvey recovery work Feb. 23-March 2.  There is so much work still to do. All skill levels are needed.  Work will be assigned according to the skills of the team members.  Work may involve: sheet rocking, mudding, taping, painting, laying flooring, siding or insulating or other!  They are looking for people eager to work and to learn and engage with home owners affected by the hurricane.  Contact Sally or Nancy for more information.  Deadline to register is January 27th. Sally’s contact info:  sbmcconnell06@gmail.com  406-600-0303; Nancy’s contact info: neflint@gmail.com

SHILOH’S PRAYER GROUP – Shiloh has a prayer team that meets every Tuesday morning at 11:00 am and we are done by noon.  This is a very small group of dedicated people who have been called to pray for the needs of the church as well as pray for all other requests for prayer.  The prayer team is not a replacement for each person’s responsibility to pray.  However it is an intermediary, going before the throne of God on behalf of others.  Everyone is welcomed to join us.  You do not need to come every week.  “…for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.”  Isaiah 56:7

Pastor’s Corner for Sunday, January 13, 2018

Click here to watch a video invite to prepare us for worship.
This Sunday we will study Micah 6:8.  In my own reflection on this passage I have been continually focusing on the ending part, “walk humbly with your God.”  So many times in our lives we think we know where God should be, or what should happen next in the world.  Yet, being Christian means we are open to God’s will being done in our lives.  That means we might find out we were wrong about what God was calling us to do.

One of my favorite stories in Christian history involves St. Francis of Assisi.  St. Francis was the founder of the Franciscan order, many nuns and monks in the Roman Catholic church are still a part of the order today. However, his beginnings in following his call were not pretty.  Francis heard a call from God to, “Rebuild my church.”  At first Francis took this quite literally, he took to focusing his energy on physically rebuilding the little church he was serving at the time. He physically rebuilt with stone and wood the entire building.  The legend goes that upon completing the building, he still kept hearing the same call, “Rebuild my church.”  Can you imagine your exhaustion after rebuilding and entire building and God doesn’t stop?

When much of Francis’ church was preoccupied with war in the middle east and decadent building of cathedrals, Francis discovered God was calling him to begin teaching the Jesus ways of living with those with less and being spiritually grounded.  It wasn’t the physical church building, but a spiritual revival God called Francis to.  A revival that would sweep throughout the Christian church of his day all based in the teachings of Jesus that he echoed from Micah.

Where is God calling you these days?  How are you choosing to walk humbly with God?

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

Pastor’s Corner – Sunday, January 6, 2019

Click here to watch a video invite to prepare us for worship.
When I was in college I was challenged by a professor to read one of the gospels from cover to cover.  It was a fascinating experience!  We always hear the Jesus story in snippets at church. Reading an entire gospel you get the sense of how the writer hoped to portray the story of Jesus, the role the disciples play in the story, and the hope the gospel writer had for Jesus’ life, birth, death and resurrection.  The truth is that reading the scriptures can change you and reading them in their complete form has the ability to re-engage us in God’s story.

This year I am inviting us as a congregation to read the entire Gospel of Luke in a year.  Just one book of the bible.  Our sermon series this year will not be always about Luke or focused just on Luke, but you will notice me pick Luke’s gospel more this year to encourage us to hear it in worship.  I will also publish a reading plan in the February newsletter, to make sure our commitment to reading the gospel of Luke isn’t just another lost New Year’s resolution.

Here is my hope for us as a church:  that we get so wrapped in the gospels that we begin to see how they line up with our faith, and how God might be calling us to live out our faith.  I hope as we find puzzlements that we ask questions.  Just so you know my favorite pastoral communication is when someone says, “I was reading the bible and I have a question.” I invite you to join us on the journey of reading the Gospel of Luke this year.  Just an FYI it is only 19,482 words.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

P.S. Women are some of the key characters in this gospel.

January 2019 – Newsletter

There is a story about a church named Shiloh who was planted miraculously on the West End of Billings, Montana in 1986 and how it grew to serve the people on the “growing edge.” I have been reading, listening and learning more of this story each month I serve as your pastor. It is a story of the amazing ways God has been at work here, around us, and through us as people of Shiloh. There are moments of great light in the history, moments of hardship, and under it all a hope that Shiloh can provide people with a place to renew and re-enter the world each week.

The final full week of December, I took the time to renew on vacation, so I could enter the 2019 year with you and follow God’s path for us. There is a lot happening in January, so I would invite you to read your newsletter or sign up for our weekly emails. January 10this our leadership training for all leaders and especially new people stepping into their roles. On January 27th, we will celebrate our church’s birthday and hear from our history team about the incredible work they have done. We hope you find a way to connect with Shiloh this season.

Next Sunday we begin our sermon series focused on “Finding Joy in Real Life–5 Habits for Living Well”. We hope this series provides you an opportunity to ground in your faith as we begin this year.

Additionally, I am going to invite us as a congregation to read a “Gospel a Year” starting in 2019.    I will write more about his practice in next week’s pastor’s corner.  We will be starting with the Gospel of Luke this year.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

We hope you can find a way to connect with us and more importantly with God in January!
