Pastor’s Corner for Sunday, April 28, 2019

It is Holy Humor Sunday this week.  Please wear bright colors and come to have some fun.
Click here to watch a video to prepare your heart and mind for worship.
People of Shiloh,

Holy Humor is happening today at Shiloh!   This is our day of joy as we recognize the ultimate last laugh Jesus had over death when he was resurrected.  This tradition comes from the early church as a Sunday of jokes and laughs to remind people of the joy of God in their lives.  We also hope it is something new as you find time to engage your humor side, the side that gives us hope and release from the hard parts of life.  Part of being Christian is recognizing that God in Christ learned to appreciate a good belly laugh to help deal with stressful times, just like we do.

Holy Humor Sunday is about the resurrection of Jesus and resurrections in our own lives that take us by surprise, lead us to new life, and help us to laugh.  One time another pastor and I were talking with a group of youth and a question was raised, “What if someone faked the resurrection?” To which my friend replied, “It worked didn’t it.”  Here we are today celebrating the resurrection because it worked.  It invited a group of people into a new life of sharing God’s love with everyone they encountered.

Next week we will be diving into a new worship series call “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” that is focused on how we can resurrect the art of neighboring in a world that is statistically growing more lonely.  As always, I want to remind folks you can watch our services live or listen to sermons later by going to www.ShilohBillings.Church.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler #loveBillings

This Spring we will be entering a time of learning about our neighbors. How to be a good neighbor, and how Christ calls us to this.  We hope you will join us for this sermon series of walking with the disciples as they learn to neighbor and call people to be neighbors in return.

“Every human being has value. This is the basis of all healthy relationships. Through living each day as it is given to me, I’ve learned that. It cannot be “taught,” but it can be “caught” from those who live their lives right along with us. What a privilege to be able to look for the good in our neighbor!”– Fred Rogers

Welcome to Shiloh UMC – Easter Weekend

We hope this Easter weekend is one that provides you a chance to gather in our community of faith, where we hang our life on the side of hope.  We believe that genuine community is a place where you can learn what God hopes for your life.  Whether you are experiencing stress, joy, sorrow, love, chaos or peace, we believe Shiloh can be a place where you can find grounding in God’s love.

If you are interested in learning more about what it means to grow in your spiritual journey at Shiloh, we invite you to check out Sunday morning worship or join us online by watching services on Facebook Live. As the pastor, I work each week to prepare a message that invite people to understand more deeply what God wants for our lives, as we learn together what it means to follow Jesus.  If Sundays or watching online don’t work, check out our message podcasts at www.shilohbillings.church and learn more about how we hope to live out the practices of Jesus each day.

On Easter Sunday we invite you to join us for breakfast at 9 or 11:15am.  This meal is a place for individuals and families to have a good meal and meet others who are continuing /exploring their journey of faith here at our church. It is free and all are welcome.

We are glad you are here and we wish you the Peace of Christ in every step of your life,

Pastor Tyler   #LoveBillings

America is experiencing a spiritual crisis, we as American Christians find ourselves in a wilderness of people seeking spirituality. We also know that Christians need a language to talk about their faith that draws people deeply to God. Join us during this Lenten season as we journey through the wilderness of faith, like Jesus and Moses have done before us. The skills we learn this Lent will help us find our way to God, and maybe even allow us to help others in our lives.

People of Shiloh,

This Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week.  We will begin the journey toward the cross with Jesus.  Palm Sunday is the beginning and I want to take a minute to give a little reflection on the Palm Sunday scripture.  On our Palm Sunday, we will be loud and celebratory in worship, it will be a time for us to remember Jesus’ triumphal entry into the city. If you study the scripture in Luke though, you will learn that Jesus’ parade was probably not very big or loud. In fact, it appears only the disciples were shouting, “Hosanna!”

What does this mean for us?  That only a small group of people were gathered round Jesus during this entry might mean that it was insignificant.  After all, and we will hear Sunday, there was a massive parade of military might coming in the other side of the city.  Pontius Pilate was riding in with the Roman guard that would quell uprisings during the Passover celebrations.  Yet, I wonder if this isn’t the message of God’s triumphant love. A whisper in the darkest hours of humanity, that grows in its reverberation as more of humanity understands the message of a God who loves us in our mess, and our brokenness.

This Holy Week, I hope you will join the small band of disciples in following that love through the story of the scripture.  We have passports available with all the Methodist Holy Week happenings, take one and follow the path to Easter.  I pray you find time to go to at least one extra service or event, and to remember the cross comes before the resurrection.  I invite us to remember God’s unconditional love and how often this love is too challenging for the institutions and powers of this world to be able to embrace, and that Jesus is still being crucified today in all the places people suffer.  Remember also, that we know the Good News, Christ is resurrected when love is shared.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Tyler #loveBillings

Pastor’s Corner for Sunday, April 7, 2019

Click here to watch a video to prepare your heart and mind for worship.
People of Shiloh,

I am pleased to announce, Judy Frank has been hired as our Full Time Accompanist and Chime Choir Director. Judy has been a part of our congregation for a while and in the music role, but this new role will allow her to be a part of a music team to support worship planning.  Dave Merkel(Choir Director), Judy and me get together regularly and have begun to shape and plan worship music together.  Our hope is that through prayer and our collective knowledge, Judy and Dave have better knowledge, that we can help shape a growing music program at Shiloh.

If you are interested in joining or offering music in any way, please let me, Dave or Judy know. We would love to see our music ministry grow to help us offer meaningful worship, that is rooted deeply in melodies that connects us to God.

Please join me in welcoming Judy Frank to  this new role.

On another note, I want to invite you to start planning your Holy Week, it is an important week to ground your faith.  We will be handing out passports that allow us to connect to all the Methodist Holy Week Services in Billings, we thought it would be a fun way to encourage you to experience Holy Week.  I have chosen to not have Holy Week services this year at Shiloh, and to encourage us to take part in the other church’s services.  I will be helping specifically with Maundy Thursday at Evangelical United Methodist.  I prayerfully decided this for two reasons: 1. We do an Easter Egg Hunt that takes most of our energy that week.  2.  Why do a service with half energy, when we can partner with brothers and sisters in Christ to do deeply grounded service.  I encourage you to pick your services during Holy Week and to try to attend at least one extra event that week.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Tyler          #loveBillings
