Pastor’s Corner – Sunday, February 3, 2019

Ken Koome a United Methodist Missionary from Angola will be visiting us March 16-18.  Pastor Tyler is looking for a few people to help with transportation and also hosting Ken for his stay.  Please contact Pastor Tyler if you are interested.
Click here to watch a video invite to prepare us for worship.
Starting February 10 in worship we are going to be studying the book of Philippians and how sometimes to live in community we have to give up things. We make compromise, we allow ourselves to be molded, and we trust God will work through tensions in our relationships. So, for this Pastor’s Corner I am giving up something. I have a consistent rule to not ask for things that I need personally as a pastor. I find as a leader I am called to offer insight and to give invitation to be together in our work. However, this month, in our Christian community I need something, I need your prayers.

The first thing I need your prayer for is for a weekend called “Chrysalis.”  February 8-10 I will be spending a healthy amount of time with High Schoolers at First United Methodist Church as a spiritual director. Chrysalis is a Christian spiritual and leadership development retreat for teenagers. It is modeled on the Walk to Emmaus and it is a powerful experience for those teams. In my role I will be praying, offering messages, and supporting these teenagers as they grow closer to God and each other. Keep us in prayer for a good weekend and pray that First UMC can get the teenager smell out sometime before spring.

The second item I need your prayers for is General Conference. February 21-27 I will be gone to the United Methodist Special General Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. This worldwide gathering is the only body that can speak officially for the United Methodist Church which includes churches in Africa, Asia, North America and Europe. There will be 864 delegates voting on a long held divide about the churches stance on human sexuality. This is challenging to say the least, but more so I think it will require deep prayer and the actions of the Holy Spirit. Please learn more about and/or watch the livestream at www.umc.org/gc2019I go to serve as the clergy delegate from our region. Please keep this entire gathering in your prayers.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

Our study series for January will be focused on Finding Joy In Real Life, we will explore 5 biblically based principles that remind us how living the Christian life can bring true joy and abundant life.  Click to watch the intro video.

Collaboration between churches is important.  This past week Shiloh helped organize a space at Evangelical UMC that helps with the Free Store food serving.  It is truly great to see our United Methodist Churches working together to serve our community.

Yet we press on in faith when sacrifice, conflict and discomfort rear their heads.  In giving up our burdens we find that empty hands can better take up our cross and follow.

FAITH & FILM – Faith and Film will be showing “Only You”. A childhood incident has convinced Faith Horvath (Marisa Tomei) that her true love is a guy named “Damon Bradley”; but she flies to Venice where she meets a man of her dreams, Peter Wright (Robert Downey Jr.). But can they fall in love is she still believes she is intended to be with someone else?  Join us at 5:30 pm on Sunday the 10thof February and find out.

Pastor’s Corner for Sunday, January 27, 2019

Don’t forget the Birthday Potluck for Shiloh UMC, after the second service.  Come join us as we celebrate our 33 year as Shiloh UMC.
Click here to watch a video invite to prepare us for worship.
Happy Birthday Shiloh!

This month Shiloh is 33 years old.  When our church was started the average cost of a new house was $89,430, gas was 89 cents a gallon, and a new Ford Mustang cost $7,452.  In that same year the Chernobyl nuclear disaster happened, the space shuttle Challenger exploded, Nintendo came out with its first console, South African apartheid was happening, and the United Kingdom and France announced plans to build a tunnel under the English Channel.

In 1986 Shiloh was in the middle of a farmer’s field, and now Billings is bounding beyond us.  On Sundays, I say we are on the growing edge of Shiloh, and the truth is we are now surrounded by our community on all sides. Today we will be blessed to receive a sharing from our history team on the work they have been doing, and we will learn some great nicknames for our church.  I invite you to thank the history team of Judy Kastrop, Norma Smith, and Cindy King.  Please consider ordering a copy of the history, so you can see where we have been and imagine where we might be going.  We are not the same congregation that founded the church in 1986, and part of Methodist faith reminds us that those who went before us are supporting us with their loving actions even now.

Where is God calling us to go in the next 33 years as a Christian community? We have retirement communities surrounding us, young professionals and families moving in to the south and west of us.  As we celebrate our birthday I want to invite us to come together, to pray, and to collaborate with our God on what ministry of generosity and love might Shiloh United Methodist Church be asked to faithfully step out on next.

Happy Birthday to you,

Pastor Tyler

Noisy offering continues to raise funds for our children and youth ministry.  Thank you for your faithfulness.  We took our offering last Sunday, and we will do it again on February 17, always the 3rd Sunday of the month.  Here are a few pics of our youth as well as First UMC and Evangelical UMC enjoying banned game night.

Pastor’s Corner – Sunday, January 20, 2019

Click here to watch a video invite to prepare us for worship.
Light is a such an important part of our faith and I love our church building for how much natural light it allows in.  Light helps us to see clearly, it is an image of God brining clarity, and opening insight for new direction in our life. Sometimes it can be good to also sit in darkness to know what we are accepting when we allow light into our lives. My hope is this current sermon series allows us time to see where God has shown light for how to live as Christians, but also gives us a glimpse of why we are called to accept the light and walk out of darkness.

In the theme of light I also want to lift up our Trustees work of replacing all of our lighting with LEDs.  They have been working hard this year to complete this work and I am proud as your Pastor to announce that our Trustees have accomplished this goal.  This is good news for a few reasons:  1. Our building and parking lot are well lit at night, and our space is bright.  2. We are saving costs on electricity.  3. We are being good stewards of our resources. If you see one of our trustees around, tell them thanks for the light, Tobie Stapleton, Ed Heidrich, Buddy Kastrop, Chris Munson, or Kent Thompson.

As we continue to learn these 5 practices to experience joy in real life, I hope you find ways to live them out in your life. Jesus calls us to forgive, be forgiven and experience connection with our God.  May you feel this grace in your life.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

The Trustees have been working hard to replace our traditional lighting with LED lighting.  The entire church is now LED lighting.  Thanks to Tobie, Ed, Buddy for your work moving chairs and vacuuming our sanctuary in the process.  We are working hard at Shiloh to be better stewards of your resources through energy and cost saving LEDs we are taking a forward step.

FREE STORE STATISTICS– 2018 was a very busy year for the Free Store.  1,412 family visits happened, but even more amazing was that on seven different Saturdays, 70+ families visited.  The only other time we had 70+ was in 2013 and that was only once.  Even more telling is our average number served per Saturday was 53 in 2017 and 56 in 2018.
This mission continues to make such a difference. However without your support of time and/or donations (goods or money) many in our community would be living with oot what the resources the Free Store provides. THANK YOU. Co-directors: Dale Francetich and Peg Parker.

TEXAS UMVIM TRIP– Sally McConnell and Nancy Flint are leading an UMVIM work team to the Texas coast to do hurricane Harvey recovery work Feb. 23-March 2.  There is so much work still to do. SHILOH’S PRAYER GROUP – Shiloh has a prayer team that meets every Tuesday morning at 11:00 am and we are done by noon.  This is a very small group of dedicated people who have been called to pray for the needs of the church as well as pray for all other requests for prayer.  The prayer team is not a replacement for each person’s responsibility to pray.  However it is an intermediary, going before the throne of God on behalf of others.  Everyone is welcomed to join us.  You do not need to come every week.  “…for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.”  Isaiah 56:7
