Pastor’s Corner – December 2, 2018

We are amidst the hustle and bustle now, this season is such a mix of emotions.  Every year I hear people say, ”I am trying to change focus this year, or I want to settle and ground myself for the holidays.”  There is a strong desire for people to find themselves during this season and there should be.  The holiday season draws us near family and people who make the times memorable and who have supported our growth.  This can be hard for the same reason, because if we have lost people in the year or those relationships have changed, this is the time we miss what was.

I invite youth this season to try one thing to ground yourself and change the focus this season.  You should prayerfully choose what will matter for you.  Do not overdo it, be gentle with yourself.  Choose one new tradition that makes you slow down, like our Solstice Service with the Jewish community.  Find one way to learn something new this season, like listening to all the sermons for the season on our website.  Or if you are missing someone, find a way to gather with people, join us for the Aging Well or Messy Worship this month.  Finally, be sure to culminate the season by joining us on Christmas Eve to remember the story of who we as a people who follow love born in a lowly stable.

Finally, I want to celebrate this year of ministry.  Advent officially begins the new Christian year and it is good to offer my thanks for the past year. We have welcomed 600+ people through our doors with an Easter Egg Hunt and Trunk or Treat.  We have welcomed 7 new members by profession of faith and 2 new transfers. Together we have mourned the loss of dear friends and family and spent time remembering their contributions to our lives.  And as always I give thanks for each conversation I have had with people who are growing their faith with our God.

As we reflect and turn toward the manger, blessings and prayers to each of you.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

Sermon Series Help
For December we are doing a sermon series on the Advent story and how we are all a part of that story. We need people from Shiloh to be in the video.  There are no speaking parts we just need about 5 people to come be in the filming project, Dave Merkel is doing the recording.  If you can help out, please come to Grace UMC, 1935 Ave B at 5:30 this Sunday, November 18.

Blessed Friends,

This coming week is Thanksgiving.  A week filled with travel, coming together, preparing food, breaking bread with friends and loved ones.  As your pastor I would encourage you make sure you have a place for thanksgiving. If you do not, then go out to dinner with a friend or connection.  One thing I constantly keep in prayer is that some of our congregation has lost loved ones in the past several years, and Thanksgiving becomes a time of remembering that loss.  I encourage you, if this is you, to find someone else to spend time with over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Many of us are going to dinner with our families.  There is one piece of advice I always hear shared, “Don’t talk religion or politics over the Thanksgiving meal.”  I encourage you not to heed this advice.  One of the reason people increasingly don’t go to or trust church is they don’t understand the value of genuine faith communities, like Shiloh.  This is the fault of us being convinced that religious conversation has to be about persuading people to one understanding. Instead church is about a place where we share hopes and failures, and where we dream with God about positive change in our community.

Don’t avoid politics. This is why our country is so polarized right now.  If families can’t even discuss it in a civil way, then who can? If politics comes up, gets tense, or happens then take a moment to just listen and breathe as the opinions fly. Then instead of flinging your opinions back out there, I would encourage you to ask the other person what they are thankful for about their community or country.  Then share your thankfulness too.  Jesus shared thankfulness and hope against a backdrop of an awful government who was crucifying his people.  He shared where he saw God active in the world and did it in a way to remind people that God is with us.

Blessings on your Thanksgiving week,
Pastor Tyler

Gifts and Talents Survey
Supporting our church takes the skills and individual support of people of different skill levels, people willing to take little risks to make a difference, and people like you.  We would appreciate if you would take 5 minutes to take this gifts and talents survey. Let us know where God might be nudging you to serve at Shiloh.  Take the survey at  https://www.shilohbillings.church/gifts-and-talents/

Two weeks ago an awful attack took place at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Eleven people lost their lives in this act of terror and violence.  In response, the local Muslim community raised funds for the families who were impacted and lost loved ones, and they vowed to stand around synagogues to protect them. Our United Methodist family responded by reaching out in Pittsburgh to support their Jewish brothers and sisters, and locally First UMC wrote letters of care to Congregation Beth Aaron here in Billings.

Acts of violence like these remind us that we need to be a people united in America to stand against those who would inflict fear on people who wish to practice their religion. As people of faith, we are called to stand with those who have are persecuted because of their faith.  I invite you to consider attending the Interfaith Solstice Service that we hold each year with the Jewish community here in Billings. This year it will be on December 21, 7pm, at Congregation Beth Aaron.  Due to limited space this is an RSVP only event.  Please contact the office 656-0050 or myself pastortyler@shilohbillings.churchto RSVP.

This service is our chance to stand with our brothers and sisters in the Jewish community, and it is also a powerful chance to share our traditions with one another, so that we can understand one another and work together to build a diverse and loving community in Billings.  There will be song, prayer, a message of hope, and we will support Family Promise together that evening.

I invite you to join me on December 21st at 7pm.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

A STORY FROM THE FREE STORE– This past Saturday a male shopper asked for a blanket, which fortunately we had. Unfortunately, he needed it for the car that he was living in. Blankets, comforters, pillows and even used sleeping bags never stay on the shelves very long. Sometimes those we receive are so stained or torn that we don’t pass them on to the shoppers. However, we do give them to the animal shelters who are always so glad to have them. We are so blessed for the support so many give!

Watch Our Invitation to Worship – Click to watch the video
In November we will be talking about Grace in worship. Grace is the Christian understanding that God offers love freely to all.  True grace is a challenging concept to understand, especially when we see people hurt others or we feel wronged by others.  God has the power to help us find ways to reconcile with those we have hurt, encourage others to reconcile with us when possible, and room enough to love everyone.

Grace is not possible without a strong prayer life, and complete Christian community, church, does not continue to follow God’s call if we don’t open ourselves to God’s grace in prayer.  We studied prayer in September as a congregation, and I heard someone say just last Sunday that we have a reputation for being grace-filled “prayer warriors.”

In this prayerful spirit, we are working to deepen our work in prayer.  This month, we will begin sending weekly prayer emails.  If you would like to sign up for these emails we ask that you commit to the following:  1) Hold the information as personal information and work to not use it in any form of gossip.  We will work hard to make sure that all information in these emails is public; and, 2) If you receive these emails, you take time each week to offer a prayer for those on the list.  This may happen during your daily prayer or simply by praying when you see the email.

You can sign up for these prayer emails by emailing liz@shilohbillings.churchor calling our Prayer and Visitation Coordinator, Liz Stanhope, in the office (656-0050).

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler
