Pastor’s Corner – July 29, 2018

People of Shiloh,
Last week one of our neighbors dropped a letter by the church. The letter notifies that our city is planning a special review of a lot on Avenue B, just south on Shiloh Rd. for the zoning of a casino.  According to city code no casino is to be built within 600 feet of a church.  As your pastor I will be writing a letter to the city and attempting to be at one of two meetings to oppose this action.  I personally believe gambling to be a detriment to our neighborhood and to our community, and a tax on the poor. Additionally I stand with our larger United Methodist church who states the following about gambling:

Gambling, as a means of acquiring material gain by chance and at the neighbor’s expense, is a menace to personal character and social morality. Gambling fosters greed and stimulates the fatalistic faith in chance. Organized and commercial gambling is a threat to business, breeds crime and poverty, and is destructive to the interests of good government. It encourages the belief that work is unimportant, that money can solve all our problems, and that greed is the norm for achievement. It serves as a “regressive tax” on those with lower income. In summary, gambling is bad economics; gambling is bad public policy; and gambling does not improve the quality of life.  (http://www.umc.org/what-we-believe/gambling)

I welcome any support in the work on this and the meeting times are listed below.  Additionally I would ask you to begin to pray and dream with me about what things we “do” want to support as future zoning requests are made for our neighborhood.  I believe as a church we can be an active participant in encouraging the positive growth of the West End of Billings.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Tyler

Thursday night we had 10 youth and 3 adults stay for a lock-in at Shiloh.  We had fun, prayed, learned about Jesus, and had more fun.  We also took time to plan youth group for our upcoming year.  Check out one of our new ways to have fun that our children and youth will be able to use, nine square in the air.

This Sunday we begin our series on living Unafraid, exploring how we do that biblically and seeking ways to support one another in the Christian walk of freeing ourselves from fear.  During this series we invite you to pray each day to be released from your fears and use this acronym to help you in your prayer life.

VOLUNTEER FOR SHILOHWe need many volunteers to keep the church running and welcoming.  In the hallway in front of the Fellowship Hall is a round table with clipboards and a calendar on it.  There are 2 clipboards asking for Ushers(1stand 2ndservices).  There is one clipboard asking for Prayer Leaders.  During the summer, the Prayer Leader is only needed for the second service.  There is one clipboard asking for Lawn Mowersand in the winter we ask for folks to shovel snow. The last item is a calendar where people can sign up to bring goodies for the Fellowship Hour.  Passing the clipboards around during the service can be distracting, so we are trying this method.  We need your help!  We ask you to please think and pray about what you can do to help keep our church running smoothly.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL– Vacation Bible School will be at EUMC from August 13-15, from 5:30-7:30 pm.  This time will be a time of gathering around a meal, crafts,   games and Bible stories.  Please contact the church office to learn about registration at 406-259-1897 or by e-mail at actyourfaith.org.

SANDWICH MINISTRY– Each month on the last Friday, the Sandwich Ministry meets and makes 200 sandwiches for the Montana Rescue Mission.  This is a list of what they use every month: 2-40 oz. jars of smooth peanut butter (not chunky), 2-32 oz. jars of jam.  Jams spread much easier then jelly. They use 100 slices of ham, 100 slices of cheese, 20 loaves of bread and 200 sandwich bags to put the sandwiches in.  They also like to take cookies if there are any available.  If you can help with these needed sandwich making supplies, you can bring your donations to the church office.  For more information, please call Susan Hathaway at 690-3412 or the church office at 656-0050.

THANK YOU BLOOD DONORS!– A huge thank you to all the blood donors.  After almost canceling the drive due to the low numbers (1), we had 6 donors and collected 8 units of blood.  This included 3 people who saw the sign on Shiloh and dropped in to give!  We will do another drive on October 1stfrom 4:30 – 7:00 pm.  Please mark your calendars. Thank you again for supporting this life-giving cause!

Pastor’s Corner – July 22, 2018

This next month I will host a worship design retreat with people from our congregation.  At the retreat we will begin to plan our sermon series from December – June of next year, as well as develop the in depth ideas for the Fall series.  If you are personally interested in participating, please contact me.  My aim in preaching is to help us “build a Christian community where non-religious and nominally religious people are becoming deeply committed Christians.” I’d like your input (please do this today or tomorrow, as I’ll be inviting the others to help me review your ideas).

Here are the questions I’d like you to answer. Please email or fill out your bulletin and drop your response to our Prayer and Visitation Coordinator, Liz at liz@shilohbillings.church
  1. If you could ask Jesus one (or two) questions, what would you ask?
  2. What is the personal struggle or relationship issue that you most often ask for God’s help with?
  3. Is there a book in the Bible, a section of the Bible, a character in the Bible or a theme in the Bible that you’d value having as the focus of a sermon or sermons?
  4. Are there ethical issues, current events or global concerns that you believe I should address in a sermon?
  5. Thinking of your friends who don’t go to church, what might be a sermon topic or series that you feel they would be interested in attending?
  6. How can I best help you grow in your personal spiritual life through preaching? Where do you struggle in your spiritual life and growth?
  7. Last year we had a great response to some of our guest preachers. Are there people you feel would be amazing guest preachers for a special weekend in 2019?

Thanks so much for sharing your responses to these questions. I’m excited about the sermons coming up this fall. We’ll kick off the fall with a series focused on Prayer Matters seeking in scripture how prayer transformed Jesus life and how it can transform ours, followed with a series called Defying Gravityhelping us understand God’s call to give of what we have generously, and then in late October-November we will dive into a series on Grace by exploring 1 and 2 Samuel.

I better get going, my children are calling me back to play, hope you are having a great summer.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

Pastor’s Corner – July 15, 2018

Over the past year, we have been holding monthly events called Aging Well.  These times of gathering as community and hearing from people in our community have been focused on learning more about issues facing us as we age.  We have learned about Dementia, caring for people with memory loss, veteran’s benefits, holistic living, and normal vs. not normal aging.  The hope for these events has been to gage a need in our community for this kind of offering.  We have been successful, and have had 10-20 people at each learning session, and beyond that the response of what people learn and the peace they have found in the learning has been overwhelming.  People are finding hope and excitement through the knowledge they are gaining and the community they are building.

For us to continue next year, we will need to have some folks step into volunteer roles for us to continue.  Currently I am looking for two positions:

  1. Event Host
    1. Greet people at events.
    2. Help speakers feel at home by welcoming them to the space.
    3. Assist Pastor Tyler in coordinating groups to provide lunches.

    2.   Calendar Coordinator

  1. Contact potential speakers.
  2. Help Pastor Tyler plan the speaking schedule for next year.

If you are interested in helping out, please contact me in the office, by phone or email.  We hope to start this year’s season of Aging Well October 3, at Noon.

Enthusiastic Shalom,
Pastor Tyler

Pastor’s Corner – July 8, 2018

People of Shiloh,

This week I will return from Intergenerational Camp at Flathead Lake UM Camp.  Camp always is a powerful reminder that time away in nature can bring new awareness of God’s presence in our lives.  The playfulness of nature gives us a new sense of God’s hope in our own lives, and new perspective to see where life is stirring around us.  The camps of our church were founded for this very purpose and I invite all of us to take advantage of these facilities for an organized camp, family getaway or personal retreat to support your journey of faith and abundant living.

Here is a short description of each of our Montana camps:

Flathead Lake is a year-round campground retreat facility.  The camp is bordered by 3,000 feet of pristine shoreline of Flathead Lake and is set amidst 30 acres of lush forest and grounds.  Recreation opportunities  include canoeing, swimming, basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, baseball, hiking, fishing, table tennis, camp fire circle .  Facilities include 12 cabins with sleeping capacity of 180, dining hall and retreat center, restroom and shower facilities, large indoor chapel, fire pit area, outdoor chapel area, four classrooms, dock, swimming area, basketball and volleyball courts.  Food services are available for groups of 40-180. Heated cabins support 50 overnight guests during the winter.

Luccock Park Camp offers individuals, families and groups of all sizes a mountain setting in paradise ~ literally located in Paradise Valley south of Livingston, Montana.  Luccock Park can offer you the opportunity of many venues.  Take an easy hike to Pine Creek Falls, play basketball on the open court, enjoy an old fashioned game of horse shoes or just pull up a lounge chair and enjoy the peace and quiet that can only be found at Luccock Park.

Camp on the Boulder is a pure and holy place set apart from life’s distractions, located on 79 acres set in the Absaroka Mountains of south-central Montana surrounded by wilderness.  Our recreational opportunities include a low ropes course, a PDGA registered Frisbee golf course, mini golf course, volleyball and basketball courts, great hiking and many other recreational activities including fishing on the Boulder River!

Prayers that we all find a glimmer of God’s peace in nature this summer,

Pastor Tyler

BLOOD DRIVE – Shiloh UMC and United Blood Services are teaming up to support our local hospitals during one on the hardest times of the year!  This summer is especially difficult as the need for blood has nearly tripled and the amount of donors we are seeing have decreased by 45%.  This makes keeping the blood supply up, a very hard task.  So we are partnering with United Blood Services on July 12th from 8:30 am – 11:45 am to help make sure we can keep our hospitals stocked with the lifesaving blood they need! You are important as a donor because with every donation you give saves up to 3 lives.

If you donate on July 12th you will be entered to win a $300.00 DQ or ice cream card.

We ask that each of you talk with your coworkers, friends, family and students ask them to please sign up to save up to 3 lives on July 12th.

RELAY FOR LIFE – The Relay for Life team will be selling luminarias for $10.00 each.  The luminarias will be placed around the track at West High the night of July 13th and can be bought in honor of a loved one or in memory of a loved one who lost their battle with cancer.  This is the last week to purchase them.  Someone will be in the Fellowship Hall after service to assist you.
