Pastor’s Corner – September 30, 2018

Children don’t forget to bring stuffed animals for our stuffed animal retreat.  Animals will stay at the church for a week, do spiritual practices and send pictures home.  Kiddos can pick up their stuffed animals Sunday October 7 or any day after that.

This Sunday we will wrap up our Prayer Matterssermon series.  It has been an honor to explore prayer with this community, we encourage you to go catch up on the messages in our podcast or read them on our website.  So many thanks are needed for this, including the 16 people who attended the planning and Becky Davis for sharing one of the messages.

In October we are inviting our congregation to participate in our “Season of Generosity.”  Our sermon series and congregational study focus will be on being a “Generous Church.”  The book study will use Defying Gravity: Break Fee of the Culture of More by Tom Berlin. This season becomes a time for members and friends of Shiloh to seek how to use their resources to support God’s work in the world.  We encourage everyone to take time to find spiritual practices that help you to recognize where God has given you blessings in your life and how you might share those blessings.

This year’s focus will invite us to consider what practices with our things hold us down, how we clean out the clutter, tie our lifeline to God, and grow in generous Christian living.  We will do this through a prayer and book study on Tuesdays, hearing from members of our church about their call to generosity, and through cleaning out things and trying something new.

Let me share what I hope for you this season.  1.  That you find at least one skill that supports you in knowing what abundance is for you, and how you can share that abundance in the world.  2.  That you will find one new way to connect to God as you practice generosity.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

WHO MOWS THE CHURCH LAWN?  The answer is: a dedicated group of SUMC individuals who spent 4-5 hours each week to complete the mowing (approx. 6 acres) and keep the church property looking neat and orderly.  This summer, the church’s riding lawn mower broke down and had to be repaired.  During the 2 1/2 weeks of shutdown, a commercial lawn company was hired to complete the mowing at a cost of $150.00 per week.  The SUMC trustees appreciate and thank the individuals who have donated their time and labor to maintain our lawn this summer.  Also, the cost savings of at least $150.00 per week helped stretch the church budget.  Please help the Trustees extend a special thanks to Jerry Stanhope, Gary McFarland, Kent Thompson, Dave King, Toby Stapleton, George Forton, and Bob Teegardenfor their help and dedication.

“During Paul’s lifetime, the Christian church was not yet an institution or a centrally organized set of common practices and beliefs. It was a living organism that communicated the Gospel primarily through relationships. This fits with Paul’s understanding of Christ as what we might call an energy field, a set of relationships inside of which we can live with integrity. Today’s support or recovery groups are good examples of these relationships.”
-Richard Rohr

This past week I went on retreat to work on worship planning, to be connected to God in prayer and to center my being in the teachings of Jesus. Over the weekend I am attending a meeting in Bozeman of leaders from our United Methodist Churches in the Mountain Sky Conference consisting of Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and a tiny part of Idaho.  Many of these conversations will be about the “right” structure for us to organize under, or the ideal way to do things.

I have learned one thing in particular as I have served here at Shiloh, relationships are how the gospel moves with the fire of the Holy Spirit.  In my time as a Methodist, I have learned that difference bridged in relationship is one of the sweetest gifts of God.  As I sit in these meetings, I wonder if you might pray for us, and also ask yourself, “What it would mean for Shiloh to share God through relationships in our community?”  Please email me or call me with some responses, trust me I might need them in some of these meetings.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

Pastor’s Corner – September 16, 2018

Watch Our Invitation to Worship – Click to watch the video
A friend of mine just shared a story with me of when she was training to be a pastor.  She was doing what is known as CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education).  This is the time when Pastor’s spend time being chaplain interns at hospitals and care facilities.  Most of the day involves meeting with people you will have short or very limited connection with and hoping to support them in their grieving, loss, or challenges.

One of the first days in this work my friend walked into a room where a woman had just lost her husband, who was a Baptist minister.  Just prior to this loss the woman had lost both of her children too.  This lifelong Christian woman turned to my friend and said, “I don’t even know if I can believe in God anymore.  I don’t even feel like prayer is doing anything, it feels like I am talking to a wall.”

“Prayer begins where our power ends.”   ― Abraham Joshua Heschel

My friend had a chance to meet with woman a few weeks later, and she said, “I still don’t feel like I hear or have any real connection, but from time to time hymns come to me.  I guess that is some form of prayer.”
This week we will continue learning about prayer, and I can’t help wonder what this woman went through between these two moments.  I do know something; she didn’t give up on her “conversation with God.” Despite her feelings of betrayal and loss, she held to a practice of prayer.  This Sunday I invite us to consider where our next step in our practice of prayer might be?

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

Pastor’s Corner – September 9, 2018 – Kickoff Sunday

Sunday is Kickoff Sunday, wear your favorite team jersey, bring a dish for an after church potluck, and come join us as we start our fall with a sermon series on prayer.
People of Shiloh –

Welcome back to Shiloh this Fall!  We hope you can join us for “Kick-Off” Sunday this week, September 9.  If you have a football jersey, wear it to church.  This will be our celebration of coming back together to begin our journey of learning and growth for the fall.  Please note there is only 1 service this Sunday at 10:15am.  The desire is to have all of Shiloh’s people gather together and experience worship as a complete community.  Following our service there will be a meal and chances to share an interest in ministries you might want to know more about.

This Sunday also begins our new sermon and study series called, Prayer Matters.  We will be studying why prayer matters to us a people of Jesus, and taking some time to learn the practice of prayer, learn types of prayer, and how prayer can guide us on our path.

One of my favorite authors writes this about prayer:
“Jesus prayed a lot. In the way wind and water give shape to dunes and valleys, Jesus fashioned his human nature and created it in the way God fashioned Adam in his own image and likeness. For Jesus human nature wasn’t simply an empty jug into which his incarnation automatically flowed. Prayer brought things into his human nature that were not there before.” -Huston Smith, Religion Scholar

This reminds us that prayer can change us and Jesus showed us that prayer is a powerful tool to invite God into our lives, and companion us on our journey.  Come learn more about prayer with us.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler
