Pastor’s Corner – September 2, 2018

Join us by brining your animal, a picture, or their name so we can offering a blessing to the living creatures that grace our lives.
In May 2001 journalist Giles Brandeth interviewed South African Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It was a powerful experience for Brandeth, for Desmond Tutu was suffering from prostate cancer and there was a real chance this might be the last interview he would ever give. What might Tutu want to talk about? Perhaps the amazing transformation in the politics of his country, and of which he himself had a leading role. No. Here’s what he told Brandeth: “If this is going to be my last interview, I am glad we are not going to talk about politics. Let us talk about prayer and adoration, about faith, hope and forgiveness.” For Tutu these are the things that are the stuff of life.

This fall we will be diving deeply into prayer and understanding the ways we are called to come to God as Christian people.  As your pastor I am excited about these times when we will get explore how to live our faith together.  Last Sunday, 16 people gathered to help plan and vision worship for this fall. In September we will be studying prayer together and how to stay connected in following our God.  In October, we will be exploring how to let God help us defy the gravity of this world with gratitude as we explore practices of generosity, and in November, we will delve deeply into Grace, exploring the depths to which God calls imperfect people to God’s loving work in the world.

We hope you will join us next week as we kickoff this fall on September 9, with one service at 10:15am.  Our choir will return, directed by Dave Merkel and then join us after worship for a meal.

Welcome home people of Shiloh,
Pastor Tyler

Pastor’s Corner – August 26, 2018

Don’t forget to bring your school supplies for Meadowlark and Big Sky schools.

This year we asked the Secretaries and Principals of Big Sky and Meadowlark Elementary Schools what supplies they need but do not receive through other means.  Here is the list they gave us. Wal-Mart Gift Cards, Hand Sanitizer (Large), band aids (3/4″ and 1″) (not novelty), and Cortisone cream, Kleenex, glue sticks, healthy snacks (kindergarten), underwear-Boys and girls (sizes 6,7,8), socks (all kid sizes), leggings and sweats (sizes 6,7,8).  If you are interested in purchasing any of these, please place them in bins in the Fellowship Hall on or before August 26th.  Thank you for your support and help.

Education has long been a centerpiece of the United Methodist tradition.  Going back to John and Charles Wesley who received a strong education from their mother Susanna.  Susanna had an incredible education background for a woman in her era.  Susanna knew several languages, knew the Bible well, and passed on this vast knowledge to her children.   In Montana, Methodists have long worked for education, one great example is the founding of the college that is now Rocky Mountain College.  Part of our history is we believe that people can change the world when empowered through a good education and with the support of a Holy Spirit filled community.

In this spirit, it is important for us to continue learning as a congregation on how we can help our community support education.  The best way for us to do this is by learning to be missional and connecting with our schools.

miss-ion-al
Adverb/Adjective
  1. Describing an act of sharing God’s love in the community.
  2. Existing as part of the above act.

Today, during worship we are going to be missional in several ways.

  1. We are going to bless the backpacks of our students heading back to school and supplies we send to the schools.  We want our children to know that we care about their education and that we are supporting them as they learn.
  2. Second, we will take a student offering to support students through scholarships administered by our United Methodist connection.  This shows we support people connecting with knowledge in our global community.
  3. Finally, we will be invited to write letters to educators and staff in our schools.  A form letter can be found at https://www.shilohbillings.church/teacher-letters/

Gracious God bless our teachers, staff, and students as they return to another year of learning.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

Worship Survey

We want to know how worship is connecting you to God.  Please take a minute to fill out a worship survey for the service you regularly attend:

8:00am – Click Here

10:15am – Click Here

Worship this Sunday is at 8am at Shiloh and 10am at Rose Park.  We hope you can join us.
People of Shiloh,

Last week, this week and next week you will have an opportunity to take a survey on our worship. I am sure you have noticed more surveys since I showed up, it is because your voice matters to our church.  We function best when I can hear God’s calling on your heart for how we can seek God in worship, discipleship, service and mission.  I invite you to complete this survey and turn it in, either on paper or online.  There is one survey for each service.

I also want to take time to share with you why I do sermon series.  I believe that part of our challenge of connecting with people new and long time to our church, is we don’t always give a reason to come back.  Sermon series, and liturgical seasons give people that reason by and large.  If something is happening that you appreciate, you show up.

I use these 5 areas developed by preacher Adam Hamilton to guide our work around the types of series we should offer as Christians in worship, and work to tie them to liturgical seasons:

  1. Evangelism (designed for the unchurched/nominal Christians, “fishing expeditions,” includes an invitation.  Our “Broken” and “Unafraid” series are examples. Done usually in January and April/May after CEOs are here.)
  2. Discipleship (majority of sermons are in this category.  “Road to Shiloh series”)
  3. Equipping and Sending (“inspiring parishioners to do something about their faith.” “Unwrapping Christmas.”)
  4. Pastoral Care (“offering real hope and real help to those who are broken”)
  5. Institutional Development (ensure the health and vitality of the church; i.e. purpose of the church, needs of the church, vision, preparing people for future challenges, and stewardship; preached sparingly.)

If you would like to be a part of helping us set the course for worship, I would invite you to attend our worship planning retreat on Sunday August 26 from 12-3pm.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler
