Pastor’s Corner for April 14, 2020

People of Shiloh –

I awoke the Monday after Easter with trouble in my heart.  The trouble was the knowledge that we are unsure how long this all goes on and what life will look like after all this.  We are still waiting to see how hard this virus hits our community, and how it will change how we live. I took some time to dwell in scripture and as I often do in times of trouble, I turned to the Psalms which say:

Psalm 25:16-21 Common English Bible (CEB)

16 Turn to me, God, and have mercy on me because I’m alone and suffering.

17 My heart’s troubles keep getting bigger—set me free from my distress!

18 Look at my suffering and trouble—forgive all my sins!

19 Look at how many enemies I have and how violently they hate me!

20 Please protect my life! Deliver me! Don’t let me be put to shame because I take refuge in you.

21 Let integrity and virtue guard me because I hope in you.

That is exactly how I felt yesterday.  It is as if the Psalmist was pulling out the emotions of my heart and portraying the conversation I was having with God.  Inviting me to step into the Easter life that Jesus had just called us into. Then I thought to myself, the reason I am struggling is last week I had plenty to keep me busy, editing videos for us to connect to Holy Week.  Now, real life sets in. I am sure this is how the disciples felt right after the resurrected Jesus left them.

They would have been wondering what to do next.  As I invited us to do in the message Sunday. Don’t hesitate to stay in the fear and trembling place.  Do like I did yesterday and dwell in a Psalm for a day or two.

Then as you emerge, let the power of God tug you where you should go next.  I want to offer that one direction that may bring you life is making masks for healthcare workers and others.  The details are below. Another might be taking time to call someone in the church or in your life you have not yet taken time to check in with and just see how they are doing.  Or maybe there is something your heart has been saying to you, that you have been avoiding. Maybe now is the time to dwell in that next step.

Prayers for each of us as we start the hard work of being Easter people.  Take your time to be in this moment before you jump into the next.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

NEWS

MAKING MASKS – WANT TO HELP?? – We have heard that some of you would be interested in helping during the COVID-19 crisis. Dr. Staci Lee, a physician, and Laura Forcella, a nurse practitioner, both  members of our congregation who work at Billings Clinic (BC), say that many groups have offered to sew fabric masks for BC. We have posted two approved patterns that can help supplement their mask supply for patients and guests. They should be made of a tightly woven cotton and should be layered with two different colors to easily differentiate the outside and inside of the mask.  Donated masks can be dropped off at 360 Office Solutions, just off the Zoo Drive Exit in Billings. Information is available at the drop-off site about how to receive a donation letter. They are collecting finished masks only and are asking individuals to please use their own supplies. They will accept masks of different patterns that have already been made. They will take care of laundering masks prior to distribution to our patients and guests. Questions can be directed to foundation@billingsclinic.org.  A second cloth mask effort is also underway with the help of employees and the infectious disease team at Billings Clinic. The Kaizen Center has been turned into a sewing room for the purpose of making surgical drape masks and gowns for employees in a controlled environment. If you are making masks and need troubleshooting help please contact Darlene Newstrom in our congregation. (If you need her number just call the office or email Pastor Tyler). Instructions are also on our website.

HELP US PRAY – I would like to share part of a prayer with you that I found in a book called the Prayer Box by Lisa Wingate.  Dear Father: And I wonder, am I to think of a way to aid a neighbor?  Can this old body that creaks and groans with small efforts, can it yet serve?  What does a lighthouse do? I ask myself. It never moves. It cannot hike up its rocky skirt and dash into the ocean and rescue the foundering ship.  It cannot calm the waters or clear the shoals. It can only cast light into the darkness. It can only point the way. Yet, through the lighthouses you guide many ships.  Show this old lighthouse the way. Amen.

As we go through this COVID-19 time of our lives, I am sure God will be our lighthouse and show us the way.  – Liz Stanhope, Prayer Team Coordinator

SANDWICH MINISTRY – While the sandwich ministry is suspended, we would like to know of any other help we can provide.  If you know of an organization in need, please call the church and give us the information.

Pastor’s Corner, Friday, April 10, 2020 – Easter Info

Good Friday service can be found at 7pm on Youtube by clicking the picture above or on Facebook by going to http://www.facebook.com/shilohbillings.church.  Scroll down on Facebook to find the watch party at 7pm.

People of Shiloh –

Today is Good Friday.  A day that was anything but good in the story of Jesus.  Today we remember Jesus’ death, the torture of a man who loved everyone, and we suffer and die in that moment.  It is the day that makes possible Easter, so don’t move too quickly through the pain.  Remember the places of wounding in your own life, remember that God has felt them too.  Trust your God knows the struggles you go through, even now.

Then I hope you will join us Sunday for either Sunrise at 6:30 or 10:30 for our Celebration service.  We will have online worship put together from people and clergy from all 5 of our United Methodist Churches.  Let’s join together in celebrating Easter, much the way early Christians celebrated.  We will celebrate like them from small rooms, communicating in creative ways with fellow believers, and hopeful that love can conquer the scariest parts of our world.

Prayers as you enter this Holy Weekend of our faith.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Tyler

Pastor’s Corner for Monday, April 6, 2020 – Holy Week Info

Learn about our Holy Week at this time and how you can journey with us to Easter over the next week.

People of Shiloh –

We have several ways you can practice your faith this week as we approach Easter Sunday.  I would encourage you to take the opportunity to connect in at least 2 other ways to your faith, beyond Easter Worship.  Read a devotional, do the stations of the cross, join us for Maundy Thursday on Facebook Live, or watch our joint Good Friday service.

And if you are looking for one extra experience of connecting with God and our community, I would invite you to journey outside each night at 8 pm.  If you do you may find yourself surrounded in our Billings neighborhoods by people howling. Howling for healthcare is becoming a nationwide movement of solidarity with those working hard to keep us safe during this time.  As you journey outside consider joining in the howls with your neighbors as spiritual practice this week. A way of letting your neighbor know that you are a child of God and will do ridiculous things to let others know we care about them.

Let’s howl for Jesus’ sake this week so that our community can know we care for them.  Then let’s practice our walk with Christ as we journey with him to the cross.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Tyler

Daily devotions will be posted on Facebook for Holy Week.  Anyone can access these by going to http://www.facebook.com/shilohbillings.church
Stations of the Cross – Posted on Wednesday on Shilohbillings.Church and on Facebook will be a printable stations of the cross. Go to different places online to watch videos or do it all on paper at home.  Pray for different places in our community as you journey with Christ to the cross.

Comfort Food Love Feast – Join Pastor Tyler on Facebook at 5:30pm for a short liturgy of communion and gathering together.  Plan to eat dinner afterwards, knowing that your congregation is all eating after communion too. We hope this recognition of Jesus’ final meal with his disciples reminds you we are all still gathered at the table of God together.

Good Friday: Seven Last Words- Posted at noon with a watch party on Facebook at 7pm.  There will be a service of Jesus’ final hours in music and word.  Members of all 5 Billings churches will offer us a chance to experience Christ’s death and remind us the sorrow of Holy Week and the sense of loss the first disciples felt.

Pastor’s Corner for Friday, April 3, 2020 – Holy Week Info

Learn about our Holy Week at this time and how you can journey with us to Easter over the next week.

People of Shiloh,

This week I got to the church and found these hearts all over the door.

One of our children, Devon, worked hard to adorn the church doors with hearts as a part of a worldwide campaign to show that we care for each other during this time of the Corona Virus.  #spreadingjoyinmyneighborhood

On Thursday I asked our Shiloh Leadership to consider the passage:

Acts 2:42-47 Common English Bible (CEB)

42 The believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the community, to their shared meals, and to their prayers. 43 A sense of awe came over everyone. God performed many wonders and signs through the apostles. 44 All the believers were united and shared everything. 45 They would sell pieces of property and possessions and distribute the proceeds to everyone who needed them. 46 Every day, they met together in the temple and ate in their homes. They shared food with gladness and simplicity. 47 They praised God and demonstrated God’s goodness to everyone. The Lord added daily to the community those who were being saved.

I know it is not a pre-Easter text.  However, this act of hearts on our door is a reminder that we are not a pre-Easter people.  This movement of sharing hearts is a global phenomenon of sharing love in a world that needs to know people care, right now.

How could we, Shiloh, spread the joy of Christ as this time continues on?  What ways could we be creative in courageously using our resources to support people in our community during unprecedented times?  What simple acts will we need to do to help people find grace and love in the times we face?  What people are seeking Christ at this time?

I invite you to consider this as we enter Holy Week.  How do Christ’s life, death, and resurrection move us in the Holy Spirit to offer God’s grace to the world?

Don’t do anything new this week to change the world, there will be time for that.  As your Pastor, I ask you to take part in the Holy Week practices of faith in our Holy Week section below.  And as you do them consider how, like the disciples, you will be called to share God’s grace in new ways after Easter.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

HOLY WEEK
Palm Sunday Parade and Service – Join us for online worship on Facebook and YouTube at 10:30, detail below.  Prior to worship consider waving branches in a picture or decorating your house with hearts and signs of hosanna and sending a picture to PastorTyler@shilohbillings.church.  We would like pictures to offer a virtual Palm Sunday Parade during worship.  We hope you can join us.

There will be a service of Jesus final hours in music and word.  Members of all 5 Billings churches will offer us a chance to experience Christ’s death and remind us the sorrow of Holy Week and the sense of loss the first disciples felt.

Easter Sunday Celebration Service- Join us online at 10:30am for Easter Sunday.  This will be a service of song and worship to remember that first Easter.  This powerful morning service will help us all remember that Christ has called us to be Easter people, even in the days of the Corona Virus.  Dave Merkel and other musicians will provide the music.
