April 29, 2018 – Pastor’s Corner

Invitation to Sunday Worship
As a part of our new contact system and database at the church we are asking all members and friends of Shiloh to fill out a contact form.  Please take a few minutes and fill it out here: https://shilohbillings.breezechms.com/form/0c17d1
Pastor’s Corner –
Over the past year, we have been holding monthly events called Aging Well.  These times of gathering as community and hearing from people in our community have been focused on learning more about issues facing us as we age.  We have learned about Dementia, caring for people with memory loss, veteran’s benefits, holistic living, and normal vs. not normal aging.  The hope behind these events has been to gage a need in our community for this kind of offering.  We have been successful, and have had 10-20 people at each learning session, and beyond that the response of what people learn and the peace they have found in the learning has been overwhelming.

This Sunday, Rev. Rick Hulbert will be at Shiloh to share with us his passion for ministry with people in wiser years of life.  Rick has started a program in Helena very similar to ours and I have invited him to share some of his successes.

For us to continue next year, we will need to have some folks step into volunteer rolls for us to continue.  Currently I am looking for an event host who can be a greeter at the events, help our speakers feel at home, and also assist me in coordinating the lunches provided by outside groups.  I am also looking for someone to assist me as a calendar coordinator, this person would help me with contacting potential speakers and helping me setup next years calendar.  We will be taking a break after May with our Aging Well program and planning to start up again in September.

If you are interested in helping out, please contact me in the office or by email.  Please join us May 2nd at 11:30 to learn about building age friendly communities.

Enthusiastic Shalom,

Pastor Tyler

If you can’t make it those days go ahead and still give us a call and we will get you signed up for another day.

SMALL GROUP PRAYER AND STUDY – Tuesday, May 1st, Pastor Tyler will continue to be leading a small group study to accompany the Broken sermon series.  In this group, we  practice  prayer, share in conversation, and end with a love feast every time.  It is offered twice each Tuesday at 12:00 pm and 5:30 pm from April 17 – May 22.  The book we are using is Everything Happens for a Reason and Other Lies I’ve Loved by Kate Bowler. This book tackles the topics of faith couched in a question “Why do bad things happen?”

BROKEN – In April and May we will journey through a sermon series called Broken. This series will explore broken places in our world.  We are going to see how others have found hope amidst those challenges. We are not just seeking hope that brings ecstatic joy, but the tempered joy of knowing God.  To help make this series something you are part of creating too, we would like to invite you to bring something you own that was broken and you have fixed or repurposed.  We may use this in slides, video or for the altar.

AGING WELL  – Join us on Wednesday, May 2nd at 11:30 am to learn what it takes to make a community age friendly for all ages.  A livable community is designed with all residents in mind, from the very young to older adults who want to remain in the community they call home.  Join us as we hear from AARP Montana on how we can work to make our community livable for all ages.  Lunch is provided.

FOOD BANK SUNDAY – Sunday May 6th is Food Bank Sunday. Winter is finally over but the need for food is still present.  The Food Bank can always use: can goods, peanut butter, jelly, individual serving items, shelf milk, beans, rice and pasta. Personal items such as toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, tooth paste are also needed. Baby food and diapers are needed. They also need sandwich bags and brown lunch bags.  Please place your donations in the barrel inside the entry doors and thank you for helping our community.

SHILOH COMMUNITY GARDEN – We have a great community garden and we have a few spots left that anyone can rent for $50.00.  Please contact the office if you are interested. This a chance to help feed both your family and our community. There is one spot left.

KEYS FOR THE CHURCH Do you have keys to the church?  If you have any keys to the church, please either call the office (656-0050) or email the information to Pam (pam.d@shilohbillings.church) as soon as possible.  Thanks in advance.

LAWN MOWERS NEEDED – Can you help mow the lawn this summer?  Now that the snow is gone, it is lawn mowing season.  If you can help mow the church lawn, please sign the clipboard in the Fellowship Hall or call the office with the dates you are available.  It takes about 4 hours and training is available.  Thank you so much for your help!!!

COOKIES NEEDED – Thank you to everyone who has signed up to sponsor a Sunday Fellowship hour.  We still need to keep some cookies on hand and the cupboard is really bare.  We can also use cookies to send with the sandwiches on sandwich making Friday.  If you are going to make cookies, please make an extra dozen or so for the church.  Thank you so very much!!

FAITH & FILM – The movie for the May Faith and Film is The Greatest Showman, starting Hugh Jackman who leads an all-star cast in this bold and original musical.  Inspired by the story of P.T. Barnum (Jackson), the film follows the visionary who rose from nothing to create a mesmerizing spectacle.  This inspirational film also stars Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya. Because of Mother’s Day the date has changed to Sunday, May 20th at 5:30 pm. Run time: 105 minutes, release date 2017.  Bring a friend, a snack, or just yourself and as always we we’ll have a discussion after the movie.

FREE STORE –
Cleaning out your closets?  Having a garage sale?  The Free Store is always hoping for donations of clothing, kitchen items, linens and even suitcases.  However, we have neither the storage room nor the demand for all the other items that one may no longer need. In fact, if those are left for the Free Store, the volunteers must dispose of them, which takes away from other tasks that need completing.  Thank you for your cooperation and support!  You do make a difference!!

Invitation to Sunday Worship
As a part of our new contact system and database at the church we are asking all members and friends of Shiloh to fill out a contact form.  Please take a few minutes and fill it out here: https://shilohbillings.breezechms.com/form/0c17d1

Please be aware our church is being used for the Yellowstone Conference Middle School Retreat this weekend.  The facility will be unavailable for other groups to use from Friday afternoon through Saturday night to help us maintain Safe Sanctuaries.  Thank you for your generosity in creating safe places for young people to connect with God together.

Pastor’s Corner –

People of Shiloh –

There is a story of a young boy who is being bullied by an older boy.  The older boy each day comes to school with a new insult for the younger one.  Eventually the little boy misses school and the older boy doesn’t know if he will remember the insult, so he writes it down in his notebook.  The next day the little boy is gone, and the little boy is not around for a whole week.

Then the younger boy returns and the older bully walks up to him, and the little boy holds out his hand.  The older bully stops, and asked in a befuddled voice, “What are you doing?”  The young boy says, “I have been sick for a week, and guessed you had been writing down your insults, so you could remember them.  Can I just have them in written form because my head still hurts?”  The older boy doesn’t know what to do and doesn’t like being caught in the act, so he says without thinking, “No, I didn’t, but I am glad you are feeling better.”

This Sunday we will be exploring the sense of bullying and lack of civility that seems to have arisen in our culture in media, politics, religion, local government, and even around our family gatherings.  These realities are not new to history.  Jesus faced them in his own time and this Sunday we will use our scriptures from the series and Jesus’ skills to explore how we as Christians can respond to bullying and uncivil behavior in our modern world.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

P.S.  If you have an old phone, cell phone, chorded phone that we could use for the altar next weekend, please drop it by the office this week.  We are looking for

EASTER EGG HUNT – The success of our first ever community Easter egg event can be measured many ways:  by the 342 registered children and accompanying adults that attended, by the very flexible parents who understood the situation, or perhaps by the number of “newbies” who may attend service at Shiloh for the first time after Saturday.  However, the most important measure for me is the support given by the people of Shiloh UMC, whether donating eggs/candy, serving on the committee responsible for the planning and preparation of the activities, being one of the 40 + volunteers who came Saturday for two very busy hours.  Each of you is so appreciated.  Thank you.  Peg Parker, Chair of the Children and Youth Ministries Committee.

Pastor’s Corner –

People of Shiloh,

We are Easter People.  This is the time of year when we get to explore what it means to be people who bear the burden of hope to the world.  After the Easter fanfare is over this season involves us exploring what to do with the exciting and yet surprising news that Jesus lives beyond the moments of Black Friday.  Exploring this means looking to some of the dark places of our community and wondering, like the disciples, where is God’s joy amidst the pain of life.

Walking with Christ and living the understanding of resurrection is not easy.  It involves a commitment to hope that hangs itself on the mystery of God’s unfolding love.

We will be searching for places to hang our hope in April and May through a sermon series called Broken.  This series will explore broken places in our world and we are going to seek how others have found hope amidst those challenges.  This hope is not hope that bring ecstatic joy, but the tempered joy of knowing God.  As C.S. Lewis phrases his explanation of Joy, “It was valuable only as a pointer to something other and outer.  When we are lost in the woods the sight of a signpost is a great matter(Surprised by Joy).”
I don’t promise this to be an easy journey, and yet I know God is present in the steps we will take together.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

Invitation to Holy Humor Sunday
As a part of our new contact system and database at the church we are asking all members and friends of Shiloh to fill out a contact form.  Please take a few minutes and fill it out here: https://shilohbillings.breezechms.com/form/0c17d1

Pastor’s Corner –

Holy Humor is happening Sunday at Shiloh!   This is our day of joy and of being silly as we recognize the ultimate last laugh Jesus had over death when he was resurrected.  This tradition comes from the early church as a Sunday of jokes and laughs to remind people of the joy of God in their lives.  We also hope it is something new as you find time to engage your humor side, the side that gives us hope and release from the hard parts of life.  Part of being Christian is recognizing that God in Christ learned to appreciate a good belly laugh to help deal with stressful times, just like we do.

Holy Humor Sunday is about the resurrection of Jesus and resurrections in our own lives that take us by surprise, lead us to new life, and help us to laugh.  One time another pastor and I were talking with a group of youth and a question was raised, “What if someone faked the resurrection?”  To which my friend replied, “It worked didn’t it.”  Here we are today celebrating resurrection because it worked.  It invited a group of people into a new life of sharing God’s love with everyone they encountered.

Next week we will be diving into a new worship series call Broken that is focused on where God walks with us through the challenging parts of our lives.  As always, I want to remind folks you can watch our services live or listen to sermons later by going to www.ShilohBIllings.Church

Enthusiastic Peace,

BROKEN – In April and May we will begin a journey through a sermon series called Broken. This series will explore broken places in our world.  We are going to seek how others have found hope amidst those challenges. We are not just seeking hope that brings ecstatic joy, but the tempered joy of knowing God.  To help make this series something you are part of creating too, we would like to invite you to bring something you own that was broken and you have fixed or repurposed.  We may use this in slides, video or for the altar.

SMALL GROUP PRAYER AND STUDYStarting Tuesday, April 17, Pastor Tyler will be leading a small group study to accompany the Broken sermon series.  The group will practice prayer, share in conversation, and end with a love feast each time.  It will be offered twice each Tuesday at 12:00 pm and 5:30 pm from April 17 – May 22.  The book we will be using is Everything Happens for a Reason and Other Lies I’ve Loved by Kate Bowler.  If you need a copy of this book, let the office know by April 11th and we will order the books.  This book tackles the topics of faith couched in the question “Why do bad things happen?”  Please contact Pastor Tyler or the office to sign up for a group.

April 1, 2018 – Easter Weekend – Pastor’s Corner

Invitation to Holy Week Services

Holy week services –
Maundy Thursday Service – Shiloh UMC – 6:30pm
Good Friday Service – Grace UMC – 7:00pm

There is sandwich making on Friday this week at 12pm.

Pastor’s Corner –

Welcome to Shiloh as we end Holy Week and discover Easter Resurrection.

Alright, I am going to be very honest with you all.  This is a strange week-end in the church year.  It is a conglomeration of expectations, excitement, confusion, and joy.  Over the previous week some of us have participated in services struggling with the challenges of Jesus walk toward the cross, and his last moments with his friends.   We will experience the strange awkwardness of hearing the story of Jesus who is put to death in a violent way.

Some of us might miss out on hearing the darkness, and yet we are showing up Easter morning to see the joy of new possibilities.  Excited to hear the story of love’s victory over death.

Others of us are showing up because grandma or grandpa expects us to, mom and dad said we had too, or we really just want to see what the Pastor does to explain what eggs and bunnies have to do with Jesus and Resurrection.

As a Pastor, I hope that any of us can leave this service knowing a few things:

  1. Faith is about living an authentic life of love and forgiveness.
  2. Church is a place where you can be real with who you are, we hope you can feel comfortable sharing pains and joys with us here or in our community when it fits you.
  3. We follow Jesus and God in believing you are loved, just as you are!

If you want learn more about Shiloh or would like to meet with me sometime to ask questions about faith, please contact me.  I am willing to join you for a cider or coffee.  We will also offer Shiloh 101, a coffee with the Pastor next Sunday at 11:30am if you want to drop in.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

In the Gospel of John, Jesus gives us the “I Am” sayings, meaningful metaphors such as “I am the bread of life” and “I am the light of the world,” to reveal his mission and purpose. One by one, the “I Am” sayings of Jesus not only grab our imagination about Jesus’ identity, they also help us to experience God, who spoke the first “I am” to Moses. Join us for this insightful worship and study series as we learn more about the God we can know and as we seek to answer Jesus’ question to us, “Who do you say I am?”

Faith and Film — April 15, 2018 — A United Kingdom

The next Faith and Film features

A United Kingdom

5:30 pm, April 15, 2018

“A UNITED KINGDOM is based on extraordinary true events. In 1947, Seretse Khama, the King of Botswana, met Ruth Williams, a London office worker. They were a perfect match, yet their proposed marriage was challenged not only by their families but by the British and South African governments. The latter had recently introduced the policy of apartheid and found the notion of a biracial couple ruling a neighboring country intolerable. South Africa threatened the British: either thwart the couple or be denied access to South African uranium and gold and face the risk of South Africa invading Botswana.”   Rotten Tomatoes

Pastor’s Corner – For Sunday March 25, 2018

Reminder – Prayer Vigil today, March 23, 8am to 6pm at Shiloh.

Pastor’s Corner –

People of Shiloh,

This Sunday is Palm Sunday, a celebration of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem.  However, the reason it feels so triumphant for us is we know what happens on Easter morning.  For the disciples, there is an obvious reluctance to have Jesus entering Jerusalem the way he did.  They know Jesus is being sought by the authorities and they’re not quite sure they should trust the moment of Hosanna entry into Jerusalem.

This next Saturday we are trying something new to share our faith and excitement for Easter with our community, we are holding a Community Easter Egg Hunt from 10am-Noon.  There will be a bounce house, games, and even food trucks at this celebration.

When we began to plan this event, I shared with the planning team that this new way was a “ministry experiment.”  I invited us to set an audacious and achievable goal.  The goal was to get 100 children to experience the love and community of our church through the event.  Then I asked, “You may not reach that goal, so what is success to you?”  From the team I have heard named, “1 or 2 new families find a safe place to explore faith at Shiloh,” “our community knows we are a fun and exciting place,” and “we get to meet some of our neighbors.”

Like the disciples, some of us are unsure about trying this new thing, and I know at moments I question the risk.  However, unlike the disciples on Palm Sunday we know what Easter means.  I would invite each of us to consider what success as a faith community means on Easter weekend, and celebrate what God might be doing through us to share faith.

Please invite someone you know in the community to join us for the Easter Egg Hunt, Sunday March 31st from 10am-Noon.  Grandkids, children, friends, neighbors, or anyone you think would enjoy a fun time.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

March 18, 2018 – Pastor’s Corner

We have been asked to participate in the Whole Church Initiative. So you might be asking, “What is the Whole Church Initiative?”

Exploring the challenges of 21st century church, a 10-member team made up of Evangelical, Shiloh and Grace United Methodist Churches, both members and pastors, will be participating in the Whole Church Initiative(WCI).  The Whole Church Initiative will help us explore how we can share God’s love in our community in the coming years.  This process is built on the idea that there are no easy fixes. Moving congregations to greater vitality will take dedicated and prayerful work from clergy and lay leadership working in partnership.  The WCI process was developed by a pastor from here in Billings, Montana, Rev. Jeremy Scott.  Pastor Jeremy serves as our Vital Congregations Developer for the Mountain Sky Area and is helping to plant new churches and re-inspire existing churches to follow God’s call for their ministry.

The WCI is built to expose local church teams to a variety of information about church in the 21st century, its opportunities, and its challenges. In addition to information sharing, the process will guide congregations in identifying and executing ministry experiments that will help us better live into God’s calling for our church.  Over the next few months you will be hearing more from our team through newsletters, Facebook, email, and more. We will be commissioning the team in worship in the month of April.

We invite you to hold our team in prayer.  The Shiloh team members include Trudye King, Kelly Martinson, and Alyssa Munson.  To learn more about WCI please visit www.shilohbillings.church/WholeChurch

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler
