Generosity Corner – October 7, 2018

Our Children sent their stuffed animals on a retreat last weekend to learn more about Christian spiritual practices.  Children will get their animals back this Sunday and hear about a new spiritual practice.

Perhaps nothing helps us make the movement from our little selves to a larger world than remembering God in gratitude. Such a perspective puts God in view in all of life, not just in the moments we set aside for worship or spiritual disciplines. Not just in the moments when life seems easy.          – Henri Nouwen

Over a year ago, our congregation spent time with Rev. John Pugh sharing hopes and dreams.  Upon arriving I received that information, had additional listening sessions, and have continued to prayerfully listen through our work. The purpose of these sessions was to hear the desires of our church and the hope of what God was calling us to as Shiloh.  During this season of generosity and gratitude at Shiloh, I am going to share with you how I work with our leadership and staff to embrace those things we put forth in those listening sessions.
Quality worship was one of those desires and I am so grateful for it being named in every conversation that we had.  Quality worship can vary by person, so let me share the measures I put on worship to support us connecting to God.  1. Multiple people collaborated on the service, so worship is the call of God on community and not just Pastor’s thoughts..  2. Music, spoken words, and the order of service are prayed over to ask for God’s presence being at the center.  3. Our worship is hospitable to longtime attenders and new people alike in the language we use.  4. We include people of all ages, abilities, and skills in creating a genuine worship of God from God’s people.  5. What Henri Nouwen said above, that those leading worship hold at the center “gratitude” for what God is doing among us.
I hope you enjoy these October series of Pastor’s Corners.  I am renaming them generosity corners because in them I will be sharing the ways you as people of Shiloh and God generously call us to be a Christian community on the growing edge of Billings.
Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

NEW SUMC COOKBOOK– Shiloh is publishing a new cookbook and we need your help.  The proceeds of this cookbook will go to support the Backpack Meals Program for the Billings Schools.  All recipes in the past three cookbooks from current members will be included in the new cookbook so only new recipes are needed.  Please either send recipes to recipes@shilohbillings.churchor drop them by the church office.  We are very excited about this project – there are already close to 200 recipes included.  We only have a few recipes in the following categories and would like to see more:  Appetizers, Beverages, Candies, and Canning.  We would also like to see recipes for gluten free, barbecue, ethnic recipes, and any others you may think of – the sky’s the limit!

TRUNK OR TREATOne of our on-going goals is to increase the number of young families attending Shiloh.  The annual Trunk or Treat event is an excellent outreach effort that provides an opportunity for others to become familiar with us. We would like a parking lot full of cars giving out candy from 5 pm to 8 pm on Halloween.  If you would like more information, please let me know (Peg, 690-6370). There is a signup sheet on the easel. Come and join the fun!
