Pastor’s Corner for April 14, 2020

People of Shiloh –

I awoke the Monday after Easter with trouble in my heart.  The trouble was the knowledge that we are unsure how long this all goes on and what life will look like after all this.  We are still waiting to see how hard this virus hits our community, and how it will change how we live. I took some time to dwell in scripture and as I often do in times of trouble, I turned to the Psalms which say:

Psalm 25:16-21 Common English Bible (CEB)

16 Turn to me, God, and have mercy on me because I’m alone and suffering.

17 My heart’s troubles keep getting bigger—set me free from my distress!

18 Look at my suffering and trouble—forgive all my sins!

19 Look at how many enemies I have and how violently they hate me!

20 Please protect my life! Deliver me! Don’t let me be put to shame because I take refuge in you.

21 Let integrity and virtue guard me because I hope in you.

That is exactly how I felt yesterday.  It is as if the Psalmist was pulling out the emotions of my heart and portraying the conversation I was having with God.  Inviting me to step into the Easter life that Jesus had just called us into. Then I thought to myself, the reason I am struggling is last week I had plenty to keep me busy, editing videos for us to connect to Holy Week.  Now, real life sets in. I am sure this is how the disciples felt right after the resurrected Jesus left them.

They would have been wondering what to do next.  As I invited us to do in the message Sunday. Don’t hesitate to stay in the fear and trembling place.  Do like I did yesterday and dwell in a Psalm for a day or two.

Then as you emerge, let the power of God tug you where you should go next.  I want to offer that one direction that may bring you life is making masks for healthcare workers and others.  The details are below. Another might be taking time to call someone in the church or in your life you have not yet taken time to check in with and just see how they are doing.  Or maybe there is something your heart has been saying to you, that you have been avoiding. Maybe now is the time to dwell in that next step.

Prayers for each of us as we start the hard work of being Easter people.  Take your time to be in this moment before you jump into the next.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

MAKING MASKS – WANT TO HELP?? – We have heard that some of you would be interested in helping during the COVID-19 crisis. Dr. Staci Lee, a physician, and Laura Forcella, a nurse practitioner, both  members of our congregation who work at Billings Clinic (BC), say that many groups have offered to sew fabric masks for BC. We have posted two approved patterns that can help supplement their mask supply for patients and guests. They should be made of a tightly woven cotton and should be layered with two different colors to easily differentiate the outside and inside of the mask.  Donated masks can be dropped off at 360 Office Solutions, just off the Zoo Drive Exit in Billings. Information is available at the drop-off site about how to receive a donation letter. They are collecting finished masks only and are asking individuals to please use their own supplies. They will accept masks of different patterns that have already been made. They will take care of laundering masks prior to distribution to our patients and guests. Questions can be directed to  A second cloth mask effort is also underway with the help of employees and the infectious disease team at Billings Clinic. The Kaizen Center has been turned into a sewing room for the purpose of making surgical drape masks and gowns for employees in a controlled environment. If you are making masks and need troubleshooting help please contact Darlene Newstrom in our congregation. (If you need her number just call the office or email Pastor Tyler). Instructions are also on our website.

HELP US PRAY – I would like to share part of a prayer with you that I found in a book called the Prayer Box by Lisa Wingate.  Dear Father: And I wonder, am I to think of a way to aid a neighbor?  Can this old body that creaks and groans with small efforts, can it yet serve?  What does a lighthouse do? I ask myself. It never moves. It cannot hike up its rocky skirt and dash into the ocean and rescue the foundering ship.  It cannot calm the waters or clear the shoals. It can only cast light into the darkness. It can only point the way. Yet, through the lighthouses you guide many ships.  Show this old lighthouse the way. Amen.

As we go through this COVID-19 time of our lives, I am sure God will be our lighthouse and show us the way.  – Liz Stanhope, Prayer Team Coordinator

SANDWICH MINISTRY – While the sandwich ministry is suspended, we would like to know of any other help we can provide.  If you know of an organization in need, please call the church and give us the information.
