People of Shiloh –

This month in worship we are going to be studying the Bible, and specifically the overview of the scriptures and what the book means for us as Christians.  With easy means to transmit information in the 21st century, it is easy to transmit good information as well as bad information.  I can easily get online and search for answers to my biblical questions.  However, I do not know if my results are factual or true without knowing how to explore my answers in more depth.  Through 3 sermons in February I want to explore how we read the scriptures to find the truth we need to find for our Christian living.

The other thing I need to ask for this month is your prayers.  Please pray for a weekend called “Chrysalis.”  February 7-9.  During this weekend I will be spending a time with High Schoolers at First United Methodist Church as a spiritual director. Chrysalis is a Christian spiritual and leadership development retreat for teenagers. It is modeled on the Walk to Emmaus and it is a powerful experience for those teens. In my role I will be praying, offering messages, and supporting these teenagers as they grow closer to God and each other. Keep us in prayer for a good weekend and pray that First UMC can get the teenager smell out sometime before spring.

Thank you for your prayers and for learning alongside of us this month.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

FEBRUARY WORSHIP – true. Reading Scripture in the Age of Fake News is the February 2020 Sermon Series.  Join us in studying the Bible, and an overview of the scriptures and what the book means for us as Christians.  With all the fast ways to transmit information in the 21st century, it is easy to transmit good information as well as bad information. Through sermons in February we will explore how we read scriptures to find the truth God asks us to find for our Christian living.

DEEPER DIVE –BIBLE STUDY “Making Sense of the Bible”- The Bible is a sacred text that we hold in reverence as Methodists, but how do we understand it?  Pastor Tyler invites you to dive deeper into the text, to understand its origins, and where you might gain deeper understanding from it.  We will be using Adam Hamilton’s book Making Sense of the Bible.  Classes are held on Tuesdays and if that doesn’t work keep an eye out late in February for Sunday morning study 6 weeks before Easter. We meet at Mission Ridge Tues at 10:30 am, Feb. 2, 9 and at Shiloh UMC Tues at noon , Feb 2, 9.  Books are $17.00 and you can get one in the office.

FAITH AND FILM – This month the movie will be  10 Things I Hate About You. This movie is funny and touching and teaches several lessons about building relationships.  The movie will be shown Next Sunday (Feb 9) at 5:30 pm.  Bring a snack and a friend and join us for a evening with a good movie and discussion afterwards.

AGING WELL – Please mark your calendars for the Aging Well luncheon on Feb. 12th at 11:30 am.  Lunch will be providied by Highgate Senior Living-Billings.  The topic will be “Overcoming Social Isolation” presented by Trudi Paulson, Director of Family Services at St. John’s Ministries. As we age, we may develop health problems, lack of mobility, loss or illness of a loved one, fear of falling or getting sick to name just a few. This presentation will discuss how aging might affect our ability to stay connected to others.  Join us as we discuss this important topic.

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS – Your year-end contribution statements have been mailed.  Shiloh UMC continues to be a generous congregation and we thank you for your support. If you have questions regarding your statement, please call the church at 656-0050 on Mondays.  To locate mail you might receive at the church, like a birthday or anniversary card, look in the slot with the first letter of your last name in the mailboxes by the front door of the church.

VALENTINES DAY DANCE AND MORE!! – Join us for an evening of dancing, bingo and much more on Friday, February 14th from 5:00pm – 8:00 pm. Everyone is invited to enjoy a night of fun and fellowship and good food.  We will have a taco bar, nachos and dessert.  Cost will be a free-will donation and the funds will go to the Relay for Life Team. We hope to see you all there.

RELAY FOR LIFE DAFFODIL SALE – The Shiloh Relay for Life team will be selling daffodils for spring. Order bright yellow bunches for yourself or someone you love and bring them a touch of spring.  A bunch of 10 will cost $10.00. We will be taking orders February 1-23.  The flowers will be delivered on March 23.  Please contact Pat Montgomery at 655-3507 or Liz Stanhope at 656-0050.  There will be order forms in the kitchen and in the office.  Thank you for supporting your Relay for Life Team.

FREE STORE – We have had many requests for adult backpacks, usually from men.  This is a reflective of the number of homeless who use one to hold all their belongings.  In addition, luggage, any size, is taken as soon as it comes in.  As always, the Free Store is appreciative of any donation.  However, due to storage problems, we are currently accepting only winter clothing. Thank you for your continued support.

VISITATION MINISTRY – In the past, one of the Visitation Volunteers visited both hospitals every Monday- Friday.  The goal was to provide spiritual support for anyone from Shiloh who happened to be in the hospital.  Many options were available to the patient and/or the family: prayers, anointing, communion and support in general.  These same options continue to be available but a call must be made to the church to notify a member of the Visitation Team to go to the hospital (656-0050).  The Visitation Team has lost several members and currently the team is very small.  PLEASE call.  This is a very important ministry for all involved.
