People of Shiloh,

Last Sunday we began a series on Joseph, the father of Jesus.  One of the things I asked the congregation to do is go home and check out the age of Joseph in their nativity sets.  We learned in the early church there was a debate about the age of Joseph.  Young or old and I think the vagueness of scripture on this point is a blessing.  It is an invitation to consider that at any age God may call upon us to foster Christ’s love into the world.  We may be called to foster love for people, for creation, and for our world.  If we learn anything from Joseph or most of the characters of the Bible it is that none of them were ever ready, by earthly standards, but nonetheless they were called.

Next Sunday, December 15, Bishop Karen Oliveto will be here to preach and lead worship at Shiloh.  Many of you know that Bishop Karen was the first openly LGBTQ Bishop elected in our denomination.  What many of you don’t know is that I was one of the people who faithfully followed a process to elect Bishop Karen.  I know some of us in our church love that she is our Bishop and are thankful, and others struggle because it feels she broke a rule to become a Bishop.  I am convinced based on my experience of the election process that the Holy Spirit has brought her to our region.

My belief that the Holy Spirit brought her to us, has not prevented me from finding, at times, deep disagreement with her leadership, and it has also allowed me to be grateful for her courage in how she lives out God’s call on her life.  Wherever you fall on the challenges in our denomination, I encourage you to come hear her Sunday, meet with her, and offer Karen the hospitality our God calls us to.  I know she has a deep calling from God, and a passion to welcome all people into the life-transforming love of Jesus Christ.  I invite you to join us on the 15th at either 8 or 10:15 as she preaches, and at 9 between worship services to meet Bishop Karen.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

DECEMBER WORSHIP – Faithful: Christmas Through the Eyes of Joseph.  This December we will be journeying toward the birth of Christ with a key character to the story of Joseph.  Sometimes we over look this role, but Joseph was a father who helped raise Jesus and care for him.  What courageous action can we learn from the role of raising our savior?
HOLIDAY CRAFT AND BAKE SALE AND MINI TREE AUCTION – The Children & Youth Committee is sponsoring a craft and bake sale this Sunday .  Items for the sale can be dropped off before the sale or during the sale.  All proceeds will go to the Children & Youth Ministry.  The auction proceeds will be split between Youth/Children and the Relay for Life Team.
RELAY FOR LIFE – The Relay for Life team will be selling Butter Braids for $15.00 each again this year and they will arrive in time for Christmas.  Please see Pat Montgomery, Liz Stanhope or Susan Hathaway after church on December 8 which will be the last day before the order is sent in.  We thank you for your support of the 2020 Relay for Life team.
DEEPER DIVE… FAITHFUL: CHRISTMAS THROUGH THE EYES OF JOSEPH – Join us as we study the deeper stories of Joseph. This study takes a deeper look at the sermons heard on Sundays and helps us journey with Joseph to the birth of Christ. We will be using a study by UMC Pastor Adam Hamilton. The book for this series is available for $16. Please tell the office if you are interested in purchasing one. They take 2 days to order and receive. The study will meet December 10 and 17; 10:30 am at Mission Ridge and noon at Shiloh.

2019 ANGEL TREE – The 2019 Angel Tree is up! This year, it supports the following: Independence Hall – they request $25 gift cards from Walmart and/or Pantry items. The Tumbleweed program requests the same as Independence Hall but would like gift cards from either Walmart or Target or fast food certificates.  St. John’s: Gifts per individual requests.  Autumn Springs: Gifts per individual requests.  Donations for gift cards can be given by notation of check or in a giving envelope.  There is a list of ideas for Pantry Items in a holder on the Tumbleweed tote next to the Giving Tree. FREE STORE – Even though the calendar says we are still in fall, there are days the weather seems more like winter in February.  Consequently, the shoppers are in need of all kinds of winter wear.  We are especially short of mittens for ages 3-12, both sexes.  This church is always so supportive of this important ministry, which is so appreciated! The Free Store is now accepting paper backs. Whenever possible, please drop items off at EUMC (Drop-off  times are available Mon-Wed).  We really appreciate your support!!

If you appreciate what Shiloh does, please consider giving to us financially.  You can give online at  Thank you for supporting our work.
