People of Shiloh –
Today is Shiloh’s Birthday!  We are celebrating 33 years of ministry!  Every January we celebrate the hard work of the saints who worked to share the gospel before us, and we remember that God is still showing up at Shiloh.
One of my favorite stories about Shiloh’s past is of the time when we started our church.  We met for worship in a common room at  St. John’s United just up the road.  The story goes that each week we would have to setup chairs in an empty room.  Worship would from time to time be interrupted by people wandering in or alarms going off.  Then each week we would have to clean up and put the room back the way we found it.
Our pastor at the time comments that during the transformation of a bare room to a worship space that he realized how much a church was about the people who make it up.  We didn’t even have silverware, is how the story goes, people had to bring their own utensils for pot lucks.
Now on this Birthday find ourselves blessed with a beautiful building, green space outside, and no debt whatsoever. What is God calling us to do in our community?  What new ministries are needed to help us share the gospel?  What existing ministries need an infusion of energy?  Where are we called to share our blessing?
1 Samuel 3:21 Common English Bible (CEB)
21 The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh because the Lord revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh through the Lord’s own word.
Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

BIRTHDAY SUNDAY – Come help us celebrate Shiloh’s 33rd birthday (and Liz Stanhope’s birthday) Sunday and welcome our new members.  There will be cake and ice cream served after both services.

JANUARY WORSHIP – Let It Go: A Series on Forgiveness.  This January we will be exploring what true forgiveness looks like.  Jesus teaches us great ways to understand forgiveness, and it is not as easy as the old line “Forgive and Forget.”  Forgiveness takes practice.  We invite you to join us in learning forgiveness this January.

“TWELVE ORDINARY MEN” – by John MacAuthur is the new Adult Bible Study, Sunday at 9:00 am in the Adult Sunday School Room.  This study dives into what we can learn from the Apostles.  The study will run through May 10.  All are welcomed to join us.

DEEPER DIVE –BIBLE STUDY “Making Sense of the Bible”- The Bible is a sacred text that we hold in reverence as Methodists, but how do we understand it?  Pastor Tyler invites you to dive deeper into the text, to understand its origins, and where you might gain deeper understanding from it.  We will be using Adam Hamilton’s book Making Sense of the Bible.  Classes will be held on Tuesdays and if that doesn’t work keep an eye out late in February for Sunday morning study 6 weeks before Easter. We will meet at St. John’s Mission Ridge Tues at 10:30 am, Jan. 28, Feb. 2, 9 and at Shiloh UMC Tues at noon Jan. 28, Feb 2, 9.  Books are $17.00 and you can get one in the office.

SANDWICH MAKING  – One of the missions of our church is the Sandwich making Mission.  This Friday, the sandwich makers will start at 12 noon and make 200 sandwiches for the Mission.  They will also take cookies if there are any, and fruit. Everyone is welcomed to come and help with this mission that helps feed the homeless and hungry in our city.  It usually takes about an hour to get all the sandwiches made.  Thank you for everyone who donated peanut butter and sandwich bags.  It is greatly appreciated!

FOOD BANK SUNDAY – Food Bank Sunday is Next Sunday.  They need peanut butter, individual packs of chips and meat sticks and they always need volunteer help.

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS – Your yearend contribution statements are ready for pick up from your mail slot on the table in the entryway of the church.  If you have questions regarding your statement, please call the church at 656-0050 on Mondays.  To locate your statements and any other mail like a birthday card or an Anniversary card that may be waiting for you, look in the slot with the first letter of your last name. Shiloh UMC continues to be a generous congregation and we thank you for your support.

RELAY FOR LIFE DAFFODIL SALE – The Shiloh Relay for Life team will be selling daffodils for spring. Order bright yellow bunches for yourself or someone you love and bring them a touch of spring.  A bunch of 10 will cost $10.00. We will be taking orders until Feb. 23.  The flowers will be delivered on March 23.  Please contact Pat Montgomery at 655-3507 or Liz Stanhope at 656-0050.  There will be order forms in the kitchen and in the office.  Thank you for supporting your Relay for Life Team.

VALENTINES DAY – Dancing, bingo and, of course, eating on February 14th at 5:00- 8:00 pm. Everyone is invited!! There will be a taco bar, nachos and a dessert.  Last year’s event was a lot of fun and it was a great time to visit and dance (and, of course, eat).  We hope you can all come and join us this year.

FREE STORE REQUESTS – Recently we have had many requests for adult backpacks, usually from men.  This is reflective of the number of homeless who use one to hold all their belongings.  In addition, luggage, any size, is taken as soon as it comes in. As always, the Free Store is appreciative of any donation.  However, due to storage problems, we are currently accepting only winter clothing.  Thanks so much for your continued support

VISITATION MINISTRY – In the past, one of the Visitation Volunteers visited both hospitals every Monday- Friday.  The goal was to provide spiritual support for anyone from Shiloh who happened to be in the hospital.  Many options were available to the patient and/or the family: prayers, anointing, communion and support in general.  These same options continue to be available but a call must be made to the church to notify a member of the Visitation Team to go to the hospital (656-0050).  The Visitation Team has lost several members and currently the team is very small.  PLEASE call.  This is a very important ministry for all involved.
