Pastor’s Corner for Sunday October 13, 2019

People of Shiloh,
This month we are studying grace, and specifically the means of grace that John Wesley the founder of Methodism outlined.  These means of grace included what he call acts of piety and acts of mercy.  In this and next week’s messages and Pastor’s Corner I will be highlighting both of these and how they help us grow closer to God.
Church attendance in the United States is in decline and with it there is a sense that piety is too.  Piety is pretty poorly used word in our society.  For many of us it conjures up images of what we are not doing to fall into favor with God, or we feel guilt for not being in church.  People feel like the opposite of piety is breaking the rules of God or even worse .  Wesley and we as modern day Methodists should actually own up to the idea that piety is our willingness to turn to God each day, in regular practice.   Specifically through practices that keep us in the habit of finding God each day.  John Wesley outlined these practices:
Individual Practices – reading, meditating and studying the scriptures, prayer, fasting, regularly attending worship, healthy living, and sharing our faith with others.
Community Practices – regularly share in the sacraments, Christian conferencing (accountability to one another), and Bible study(learning more about faith together).
I have seen these practices transform peoples’ lives, change old habits to new life empowering ones, and help people live close to the whole hearted living that is the kingdom of God.  Regular church attendance helps us get there and as we will explore next week, it helps to be in church, but then you have to go be church in the world.
Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler
