Shiloh E-Pistle for July 9, 2020

What happens when our world falls apart? How do we press onward when our tightly- knit plans unravel into loose threads? What do we become when our identity—or the path we’re on—comes undone? What if all of this is not the end we fear it will be? In our unraveling, sometimes life surprises us with unexpected joy, love, and hope— with a new beginning we couldn’t have imagined.

Sometimes we need God to unravel us, for we long to be changed. This worship series explores 9 stories of unraveled shame, identity, fear, grief, dreams, and expectations. These are stories where God meets us in the spiraling, unraveling our plans—and us—into something new.

People of Shiloh,

In my daily study and prayer with God I am finding growing hope for our work this year.  For me there is a knowledge that we will be called to lead other communities of faith in how to be a people of God in a time that is challenging.  The challenging time we face now is a hard reality.  It is not just grounded in the fear of global pandemic, but also a culture war that continues to ramp up.  If you did not catch my sermon on July 5, I encourage you to go back and listen to it.  In it I speak of the deep fear that is drawing rifts in our neighborhoods and in our lives.  A fear not rooted in reality, and most definitely not in God’s reality of our future.

This week I invite you to begin to prayerfully consider how you might ground your faith in this time.  As a church we are providing multiple on-ramps to circle the roundabout of our faith to strengthen our hearts and minds to share God’s love in the world.  You can engage in Bible study on Sunday mornings, join a small group(starting July 12), or engage in online worship.  The life of the church is changing, and I believe it will strengthen our faith if we are willing to engage it.

If you are hoping to be a part of one of our small group worship services, please contact the office and let us know or respond to this email.  Also, please know that if you are not feeling connected to a place to grow your faith then let me know.  I have been having some incredible conversations with people in our church about where they want to grow, and I want to help support each of you in your faith journey.

Blessings as we journey ahead,

Pastor Tyler

P.S. The United Methodist pastoral appointment process means I am appointed by the Bishop each year to serve alongside a congregation for 1 year.  That time comes up July 1 every year, and I am pleased to share that the Bishop has re-appointed me to serve alongside the people of Shiloh in Billings, MT for another year.

Peggy Parker shared this poem with us at one of our book clubs:

We fell asleep in one world and woke up in another.

Suddenly Disney is out of magic, Paris is no longer romantic, New York doesn’t stand up anymore, the Chinese wall is no longer a fortress, and Mecca is empty.

Hugs and kisses suddenly become weapons, and not visiting parents and friends become an act of love.

Suddenly you realize that power, beauty and money are worthless, and can’t get you the  oxygen you’re fighting for.

The world continues its life and it is beautiful.  It only puts humans in cages.  I think it’s sending us a message.

“You are not necessary.  The air, earth, water and sky without you are fine.  When you come back, remember that you are my guests.  Not my masters.”

Shiloh E-Pistle for June 25, 2020

We hope you join us this June as we explore Hope: Living with Confident Expectation.  We will explore how hope is the foundation for faith, not a plan, but where we begin from.

People of Shiloh,

In the Gospel of John, chapter 3, is a wonderful story about a man named Nicodemus who comes to Jesus.  I was listening to a description of this encounter the other day and I wanted to share some thoughts.  Nicodemus is a leader of his people, and a rule follower too.  He is a prominent public figure in Jesus’ day.  The gospel says that he comes to Jesus in the night, which, in the descriptive symbolic language of John, means he came in a time of not knowing God or he is hiding his fear of not knowing.

Jesus says to him upon his arrival, “I assure you, unless someone is born anew, it’s not possible to see God’s kingdom.”

Nicodemus, the one who is expected to know it all, responds by asking if it is possible to enter the womb again.  Showing that this rule follower and public figure struggled deeply with metaphor.  He was too literal.  Nicodemus couldn’t understand what the spiritual rebirth would mean, and I think many of us struggle today with this understanding of what Jesus called us to.

If you read further in this scripture you come across a familiar passage.  One that has been used for a long time in our tradition to make us exclusive.  A passage that has been used to say, “To get to heaven you have to know Jesus and if you don’t then you are going somewhere bad.”  Instead if we look at the symbolic language of the passage we should see that it reminds us to find heaven here and now, and for eternity we are called to do that by be loving the Christ, the embodiment of grace and love Jesus brought to us.

The grace of Christ comes in the knowledge that God did not come to judge us, but to offer us life.  It is in the text of John 3 and the metaphor of rebirth.

Take some time this week and study this passage.  Send me some questions so we can have a dialogue.  And enjoy these beautiful God given summer days.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

 Lead Pastor – Tyler Amundson

My two primary responsibilities as a pastor are coaching leaders and creating community to help each of us see God in our everyday lives.  Shiloh is working with me to increase the interactions of people from different opinions and backgrounds.  We actively pray and work alongside God to create a diverse community to live out the love taught to us by Jesus in our daily practice. I hope you will join us as we work towards this vision of a beloved community working to spread God’s love to our community.

My personal passion for ministry is to all ages through preaching, teaching and organizing ways for people to find their connection with our community and God.  I find fulfillment in my work when I hear someone say, “I found God today.”  I encourage people to search for God on a mountaintop, in church, helping someone out, sharing in a small group, or in their own prayer life.

When I am not at work I enjoy playing with my family by growing our garden, going for bike rides or enjoying a great day in Montana.  My own personal interests involve exercise, parenting, biking, and being a computer nerd.
