Pastor’s Corner – September 16, 2018

A friend of mine just shared a story with me of when she was training to be a pastor.  She was doing what is known as CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education).  This is the time when Pastor’s spend time being chaplain interns at hospitals and care facilities.  Most of the day involves meeting with people you will have short or very limited connection with and hoping to support them in their grieving, loss, or challenges.

One of the first days in this work my friend walked into a room where a woman had just lost her husband, who was a Baptist minister.  Just prior to this loss the woman had lost both of her children too.  This lifelong Christian woman turned to my friend and said, “I don’t even know if I can believe in God anymore.  I don’t even feel like prayer is doing anything, it feels like I am talking to a wall.”

“Prayer begins where our power ends.”   ― Abraham Joshua Heschel

My friend had a chance to meet with woman a few weeks later, and she said, “I still don’t feel like I hear or have any real connection, but from time to time hymns come to me.  I guess that is some form of prayer.”
This week we will continue learning about prayer, and I can’t help wonder what this woman went through between these two moments.  I do know something; she didn’t give up on her “conversation with God.” Despite her feelings of betrayal and loss, she held to a practice of prayer.  This Sunday I invite us to consider where our next step in our practice of prayer might be?

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

Scripture to Study – Luke 18:1-16

Our study series for September is all about learning what prayer is to us as Christians, why Jesus taught us to pray, and how it can impact our lives and others.

Pastor’s Corner – September 9, 2018 – Kickoff Sunday

Sunday is Kickoff Sunday, wear your favorite team jersey, bring a dish for an after church potluck, and come join us as we start our fall with a sermon series on prayer.
People of Shiloh –

Welcome back to Shiloh this Fall!  We hope you can join us for “Kick-Off” Sunday this week, September 9.  If you have a football jersey, wear it to church.  This will be our celebration of coming back together to begin our journey of learning and growth for the fall.  Please note there is only 1 service this Sunday at 10:15am.  The desire is to have all of Shiloh’s people gather together and experience worship as a complete community.  Following our service there will be a meal and chances to share an interest in ministries you might want to know more about.

This Sunday also begins our new sermon and study series called, Prayer Matters.  We will be studying why prayer matters to us a people of Jesus, and taking some time to learn the practice of prayer, learn types of prayer, and how prayer can guide us on our path.

One of my favorite authors writes this about prayer:
“Jesus prayed a lot. In the way wind and water give shape to dunes and valleys, Jesus fashioned his human nature and created it in the way God fashioned Adam in his own image and likeness. For Jesus human nature wasn’t simply an empty jug into which his incarnation automatically flowed. Prayer brought things into his human nature that were not there before.” -Huston Smith, Religion Scholar

This reminds us that prayer can change us and Jesus showed us that prayer is a powerful tool to invite God into our lives, and companion us on our journey.  Come learn more about prayer with us.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

 Lead Pastor – Tyler Amundson

My two primary responsibilities as a pastor are coaching leaders and creating community to help each of us see God in our everyday lives.  Shiloh is working with me to increase the interactions of people from different opinions and backgrounds.  We actively pray and work alongside God to create a diverse community to live out the love taught to us by Jesus in our daily practice. I hope you will join us as we work towards this vision of a beloved community working to spread God’s love to our community.

My personal passion for ministry is to all ages through preaching, teaching and organizing ways for people to find their connection with our community and God.  I find fulfillment in my work when I hear someone say, “I found God today.”  I encourage people to search for God on a mountaintop, in church, helping someone out, sharing in a small group, or in their own prayer life.

When I am not at work I enjoy playing with my family by growing our garden, going for bike rides or enjoying a great day in Montana.  My own personal interests involve exercise, parenting, biking, and being a computer nerd.
