Pastor’s Corner –

People of Shiloh,

We are Easter People.  This is the time of year when we get to explore what it means to be people who bear the burden of hope to the world.  After the Easter fanfare is over this season involves us exploring what to do with the exciting and yet surprising news that Jesus lives beyond the moments of Black Friday.  Exploring this means looking to some of the dark places of our community and wondering, like the disciples, where is God’s joy amidst the pain of life.

Walking with Christ and living the understanding of resurrection is not easy.  It involves a commitment to hope that hangs itself on the mystery of God’s unfolding love.

We will be searching for places to hang our hope in April and May through a sermon series called Broken.  This series will explore broken places in our world and we are going to seek how others have found hope amidst those challenges.  This hope is not hope that bring ecstatic joy, but the tempered joy of knowing God.  As C.S. Lewis phrases his explanation of Joy, “It was valuable only as a pointer to something other and outer.  When we are lost in the woods the sight of a signpost is a great matter(Surprised by Joy).”
I don’t promise this to be an easy journey, and yet I know God is present in the steps we will take together.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

NATIVE AMERICAN MINISTRIES SUNDAY Today is Native American Ministries Sunday, one of the 5 special Sunday offerings of the United Methodist Church.  The Native American Ministries offering supports Native American outreach within annual conferences, provides seminary scholarships for Native American rural, urban and reservation congregations, ministries and communities.

BROKEN – In April and May we will begin a journey through a sermon series called Broken. This series will explore broken places in our world.  We are going to see how others have found hope amidst those challenges. We are not just seeking hope that brings ecstatic joy, but the tempered joy of knowing God.  To help make this series something you are part of creating too, we would like to invite you to bring something you own that was broken and you have fixed or repurposed.  We may use this in slides, video or for the altar.

SMALL GROUP PRAYER AND STUDYStarting Tuesday, April 17, Pastor Tyler will be leading a small group study to accompany the Broken sermon series.  The group will practice prayer, share in conversation, and end with a love feast each time.  It will be offered twice each Tuesday at 12:00 pm and 5:30 pm from April 17 – May 22.  The book we will be using is Everything Happens for a Reason and Other Lies I’ve Loved by Kate Bowler.  If you need a copy of this book, let the office know by TODAY and we will order the books.  This book tackles the topics of faith couched in the question “Why do bad things happen?”  Please contact Pastor Tyler or the office to sign up for a group.

SHILOH COMMUNITY GARDEN – We have a community garden.  Anyone can rent a plot for $50.00.  Please contact the office if you are interested.  We will be holding a meeting on April 19 at 6:30 pm for anyone interested in the garden and especially if you can help with the main plot that we use to raise food for local food banks.

EASTER EGG  HUNT – The success of our first ever community Easter egg event can be measured many ways:  by the 342 registered children and accompanying adults that attended, by the very flexible parents who understood the situation, or perhaps by the number of “newbies” who may attend service at Shiloh for the first time after Saturday.  However, the most important measure for me is the support given by the people of Shiloh UMC, whether donating eggs/candy, serving on the committee responsible for the planning and preparation of the activities, being one of the 40 + volunteers who came Saturday for two very busy hours.  Each of you is so appreciated.  Thank you.  Peg Parker, Chair of the Children and Youth Ministries Committee.

RELAY FOR LIFE On Sunday, April 22, the Relay for Life team will be selling pies.  We will be selling slices of pie with ice cream or selling a half or whole pie if you want to take some home.  All money earned will go to the Relay for Life team.  Thank you for your support.

Pastor’s Corner –

Holy Humor is happening Sunday at Shiloh!   This is our day of joy and of being silly as we recognize the ultimate last laugh Jesus had over death when he was resurrected.  This tradition comes from the early church as a Sunday of jokes and laughs to remind people of the joy of God in their lives.  We also hope it is something new as you find time to engage your humor side, the side that gives us hope and release from the hard parts of life.  Part of being Christian is recognizing that God in Christ learned to appreciate a good belly laugh to help deal with stressful times, just like we do.

Holy Humor Sunday is about the resurrection of Jesus and resurrections in our own lives that take us by surprise, lead us to new life, and help us to laugh.  One time another pastor and I were talking with a group of youth and a question was raised, “What if someone faked the resurrection?”  To which my friend replied, “It worked didn’t it.”  Here we are today celebrating resurrection because it worked.  It invited a group of people into a new life of sharing God’s love with everyone they encountered.

Next week we will be diving into a new worship series call Broken that is focused on where God walks with us through the challenging parts of our lives.  As always, I want to remind folks you can watch our services live or listen to sermons later by going to www.ShilohBIllings.Church

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

Rating: NR.

 Lead Pastor – Tyler Amundson

My two primary responsibilities as a pastor are coaching leaders and creating community to help each of us see God in our everyday lives.  Shiloh is working with me to increase the interactions of people from different opinions and backgrounds.  We actively pray and work alongside God to create a diverse community to live out the love taught to us by Jesus in our daily practice. I hope you will join us as we work towards this vision of a beloved community working to spread God’s love to our community.

My personal passion for ministry is to all ages through preaching, teaching and organizing ways for people to find their connection with our community and God.  I find fulfillment in my work when I hear someone say, “I found God today.”  I encourage people to search for God on a mountaintop, in church, helping someone out, sharing in a small group, or in their own prayer life.

When I am not at work I enjoy playing with my family by growing our garden, going for bike rides or enjoying a great day in Montana.  My own personal interests involve exercise, parenting, biking, and being a computer nerd.
