Pastor’s Corner

Each week Pastor Tyler and others in the church will provide a reflection on our church life or an act of discipleship.

May 6, 2018 – Pastor’s Corner

Invitation to Sunday Worship
As a part of our new contact system and database at the church we are asking all members and friends of Shiloh to fill out a contact form.  Please take a few minutes and fill it out here: https://shilohbillings.breezechms.com/form/0c17d1
Pastor’s Corner –
People of Shiloh,
When I was a middle schooler I took a trip with my family to Michigan. We went to Makinac Island. There I picked up a beautiful yellow-plastic boomerang. Back at my Aunt’s I threw that boomerang on her quiet street, hoping it would return to me. Up it would go and then “CRASH” it would hit the asphalt and slide along scraping the edge more and more. Finally, we went to a park with open space, I wound up and threw the boomerang. It arced out and up, just like before, then it turned and CAME BACK! I prepared to catch my boomerang like my favorite TV characters. It missed my hand saving it from injury, but contacted with my lip just below my nose slicing a gash in my face with the precision of an asphalt sharpened plastic boomerang.

God is calling us to go out and bring new disciples to join us on our journey with Jesus. Every leader in our church works to provide ways for our current membership to deepen their faith and follows the call to spread the gospel message to others, both young and wise in years. We want to be ready to receive new people that come to us with spaces for them to grow in their faith. We have to be ready for what comes back to us. This month I am inviting our membership to consider three ways of doing this:

  • Attend church council and help us develop our yearly goals for next year. The meeting is May 10 at 6 pm and everyone is welcome. We need input and prayer from everyone in our church on this work.
  • Complete the “Readiness 360” offered by our Whole Church Initiative team. You can do that by going to https://www.shilohbillings.church/whole-church/ or it will be offered after worship in the coming weeks to folks without a computer.
  • Attend a Shiloh 101 course in the next 6 months. We offer them every month. They are for new people to our church; however existing members need to know what we are offering to people just joining us on the journey. (Look inside for more info.)

Enthusiastic Shalom, Pastor Tyler

BROKEN SMALL GROUP PRAYER AND STUDY Each Tuesday, Pastor Tyler is leading a small group study to accompany the Broken sermon series.  In this group, we practice prayer and share in conversation.  It is offered twice each Tuesday at 12:00 pm and 5:30 pm until May 22nd.  The book we are using is Everything Happens for a Reason and Other Lies I’ve Loved by Kate Bowler. This book tackles the topics of faith couched in a question “Why do bad things happen?”

BROKEN – In May we will journey through a sermon series called Broken. This series explores broken places in our world.  We are going to see how others have found hope amidst those challenges. We are not just seeking hope that brings ecstatic joy, but the tempered joy of knowing God.  To help make this series something you are part of creating too, we would like to invite you to bring something you own that was broken and you have fixed or repurposed.  We may use this in slides, video or for the altar.

KEYS FOR THE CHURCH Do you have keys to the church?  If you have any keys to the church, please call the office (656-0050) or email the information to Pam (pam.d@shilohbillings.church) as soon as possible.  Thanks in advance.

LAWN MOWERS NEEDED – Can you help mow the lawn this summer?  We gone directly from snow to lawn mowing!  If you can help mow the church lawn, please sign the clipboard in the Fellowship Hall or call the office with the dates you are available.  It takes about 4 hours and training is available.  Thank you in advance for your help!!!
COOKIES NEEDED – Thank you to everyone who has signed up to sponsor a Sunday Fellowship hour.  We still need to keep some cookies on hand and the cupboard is really bare.  We can also use cookies to send with the sandwiches on Sandwich-Making-Friday.  If you are going to make cookies, please make an extra dozen or so for the church.  Thank you so very much!!

FAITH & FILM – The movie for the May Faith and Film is The Greatest Showman, starting Hugh Jackman who leads an all-star cast in this bold and original musical.  Inspired by the story of P.T. Barnum (Jackson), the film follows the visionary who rose from nothing to create a mesmerizing spectacle.  This inspirational film also stars Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya. Because of Mother’s Day, the date has changed to Sunday, May 20th at 5:30 pm. Run time: 105 minutes, Release date: 2017.  Bring a friend, a snack, or just yourself and as always we will have a discussion after the movie.

FREE STORECleaning out your closets?  Having a garage sale?  The Free Store is always hoping for donations of clothing, kitchen items, linens and even suitcases.  However, we have neither the storage room nor the demand for all the other items that one may no longer need. In fact, if those are left for the Free Store, the volunteers must dispose of them, which takes away from other tasks that need completing.  Thank you for your cooperation and support!  You do make a difference!!

CLEANUP DAY/COMMUNITY GARDEN DAY We invite our entire congregation to join us for our community garden planting day and church cleanup.  We need help keeping our property up and getting the garden planted.  This will be a fun day of work and a great way to get to know members of your church.  If you have your own community garden spot you can get that planted on this day as well. We have just one garden spot left. Join us as we help make Shiloh a welcoming place on May 19th at 9:00 am – noon.

SUMMER WORSHIP SCHEDULE – This summer we will be continuing with two worship times at 8 am and 10:15 am.  The 8 am service will use Pastor Dave Merkel’s recorded work for music and sermons from Pastors throughout our area. The 10:15 service will continue with our traditional order of service.  There will be 2 special Sundays in the summer when we will participate in “Praise in the Park” with other United Methodist Churches in our area, one in June at Terry Park and one in August at Rose Park.

BOOK REVIEW – Shiloh’s UMC’s Book Review group will meet on May 15 at 6:00 pm at church.  The book for discussion is A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towels.  Ron Charles writes, “this is an endearing reminder of graciousness of real class.  It has nothing to do with money; it’s predicated on the kind of moral discipline that never goes out of style”.  Everyone is welcome to join us.

April 29, 2018 – Pastor’s Corner

Invitation to Sunday Worship
As a part of our new contact system and database at the church we are asking all members and friends of Shiloh to fill out a contact form.  Please take a few minutes and fill it out here: https://shilohbillings.breezechms.com/form/0c17d1
Pastor’s Corner –
Over the past year, we have been holding monthly events called Aging Well.  These times of gathering as community and hearing from people in our community have been focused on learning more about issues facing us as we age.  We have learned about Dementia, caring for people with memory loss, veteran’s benefits, holistic living, and normal vs. not normal aging.  The hope behind these events has been to gage a need in our community for this kind of offering.  We have been successful, and have had 10-20 people at each learning session, and beyond that the response of what people learn and the peace they have found in the learning has been overwhelming.

This Sunday, Rev. Rick Hulbert will be at Shiloh to share with us his passion for ministry with people in wiser years of life.  Rick has started a program in Helena very similar to ours and I have invited him to share some of his successes.

For us to continue next year, we will need to have some folks step into volunteer rolls for us to continue.  Currently I am looking for an event host who can be a greeter at the events, help our speakers feel at home, and also assist me in coordinating the lunches provided by outside groups.  I am also looking for someone to assist me as a calendar coordinator, this person would help me with contacting potential speakers and helping me setup next years calendar.  We will be taking a break after May with our Aging Well program and planning to start up again in September.

If you are interested in helping out, please contact me in the office or by email.  Please join us May 2nd at 11:30 to learn about building age friendly communities.

Enthusiastic Shalom,

Pastor Tyler

 Lead Pastor – Tyler Amundson

My two primary responsibilities as a pastor are coaching leaders and creating community to help each of us see God in our everyday lives.  Shiloh is working with me to increase the interactions of people from different opinions and backgrounds.  We actively pray and work alongside God to create a diverse community to live out the love taught to us by Jesus in our daily practice. I hope you will join us as we work towards this vision of a beloved community working to spread God’s love to our community.

My personal passion for ministry is to all ages through preaching, teaching and organizing ways for people to find their connection with our community and God.  I find fulfillment in my work when I hear someone say, “I found God today.”  I encourage people to search for God on a mountaintop, in church, helping someone out, sharing in a small group, or in their own prayer life.

When I am not at work I enjoy playing with my family by growing our garden, going for bike rides or enjoying a great day in Montana.  My own personal interests involve exercise, parenting, biking, and being a computer nerd.
