Pastor’s Corner

Each week Pastor Tyler and others in the church will provide a reflection on our church life or an act of discipleship.

Shiloh E-pistle for Thursday, May 7, 2020

A weekly video message from Pastor Tyler.
In may we will be shifting the weekly email to come out on Thursday, so we can print it and send it to our members that don’t do electronic communication.  Additionally, we will be changing the name to the Shiloh E-pistle.  A play on the epistles or letters in the New Testament.  Each one will still have a message from Pastor Tyler, and all the updates for the week.  If you have announcements for the week please have them into the office by Tuesday.  We hope these weekly messages get to all of those who are serving alongside of us, are a part of our community, and are sharing the loving of Christ.

Pastor’s Corner for May 7

People of Shiloh,

What practice is helping you find God during this time?

I don’t know if you are experiencing this time like I am, but my normal patterns of life are not really happening.  I am finding time for some healthy habits to start and noticing some of my less than helpful habits continue in funky ways.  Times of up and down anxiety tend to propel us in these two directions in our behavior, facilitating change to healthy coping and pushing us to use familiar unhealthy coping activities.  And I am going to take a guess as your pastor that you have experienced some strange anxiety over the past few months.

I call it “strange” anxiety because for many of us we have had to ponder a deadly virus that is invisible to the human eye, and not as present in our communities as other places in the United States.  Having it not be as present here makes us doubt some of the changes we are making in our behavior to help reduce the spread of the disease.  So I find myself some days wondering, “Do I need to wear a mask in public?”  I find myself handling anxiety by taking more walks and doing more yoga, a good thing.  I also find myself handling anxiety by binge watching a few more netflix series than usual.

I pray that some of this “strange” has driven you to the place all Christians should turn during times of anxiety.  As I have shared, for me the Psalms have been a constant source for me during this time.  This last week I have been examining what Martin Luther referred to as the penitential psalms.  These are psalms that remind us to turn to God in our strengths and in our failings.  Psalm 130 in particular has been a reminder to me of our need in our anxiety and hopes to recognize that sometimes finding God means putting voice to our own human condition.  As the psalm says, “I cry out from the depths, O Lord.”

Putting voice to our anxieties clears out the things that stand between us and the God of love Christ has pointed us to.  A God that reminds us that wearing masks is not for us, but to protect those we love.  A God that begs us to seek healthy habits that connect us to God and one another more than send us off to self made hiding places of fear and anxiety.

Share with me a place in scripture you are finding refuge during this time.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

Pastors Corner for Tuesday, April 28, 2020

FOOD DRIVE – We will be holding a food drive on Saturday, May 2nd, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  The need for food for the Food Bank is great but during this time of higher unemployment and layoffs,  the need is even greater. The Food Bank barrel will be outside for those hours on Saturday and you can just drive up and drop your donation in the barrel. The needed items are pasta and rice, peanut butter, mac and cheese, individual cereals, ramen, veggies, pudding cups, jelly, soup and quart, gallon and sandwich size zip lock bags. Thank you for your help.

People of Shiloh,

This part is the hard part.  Things are starting to get reopened, and yet we are still not quite back to normal.  I keep reminding myself of the call of Jesus to care for the least and the last.  Our ability to hold off an outbreak, matters to someone we may not even know.

I have found a good old Psalm helpful this week, Psalm 23.  Something about the rhythm in which it can be read and the different aspects of life it covers have helped me to feel grounded in the love of God.

One translation of the Bible has Jesus talking about the “unforced rhythms of grace” in reference to the abundant life that can be found in a walk with God.  In this time away from the regular rhythm of life, I have found myself seeking a new pattern for when we return to what I have heard referred to as our “new normal.”

I find that in mourning so much loss this spring, that I am tired of new turns.  Today I again sat with my children as they mourned the loss of this school year.  I have heard from parents and seniors in high school who mourn the loss of what this year has meant for them.  We have redone worship entirely 3 times in less than a month and will redo twice in the next few months.  Easter was different and doesn’t feel like it really happened.  Even watching the emergence of new leaves feels unfair because so much else feels like it is standing still.

Yet as those leave break forth and my grief melts into time, I wonder what new life will come of this.  What have we learned that is important to feeling a life fully realized in God?  What have we learned about what matters for connection?  Will we emerge from these times as Easter people?  Or withdraw into the tomb, afraid of the light God offers us?

Thursday night I will offer a reflection on Psalm 23 as part of our weekly communion time.  If you would like to join in we will gather on zoom or phone at 6pm on Thursday, April 30.  Please email me if you would like to join in.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

MAKING MASKS – WANT TO HELP?? – We have heard that some of you would be interested in helping during the COVID-19 crisis. Dr. Staci Lee, a physician, and Laura Forcella, a nurse practitioner, both  members of our congregation who work at Billings Clinic (BC), say that many groups have offered to sew fabric masks for BC. We have posted two approved patterns that can help supplement their mask supply for patients and guests. They should be made of a tightly woven cotton and should be layered with two different colors to easily differentiate the outside and inside of the mask.  Donated masks can be dropped off at 360 Office Solutions, just off the Zoo Drive Exit in Billings.  Information is available at the drop-off site about how to receive a donation letter. They are collecting finished masks only and are asking individuals to please use their own supplies. They will accept masks of different patterns that have already been made. They will take care of laundering masks prior to distribution to our patients and guests. Questions can be directed to foundation@billingsclinic.org.  A second cloth mask effort is also underway with the help of employees and the infectious disease team at Billings Clinic. The Kaizen Center has been turned into a sewing room for the purpose of making surgical drape masks and gowns for employees in a controlled environment. If you are making masks and need troubleshooting help please contact Darlene Newstrom in our congregation.  (If you need her number just call the office or email Pastor Tyler).  Instructions are also on our website.

Click Here for pleated mask instructions.

Click here for duckbill mask instructions.

PRAYER GROUP – The prayer group is still meeting by phone and text.  They will pray for everyone on the list and will include all prayers that come to the website, the church phone and through the phone tree calls. If you have a prayer, please fill out a prayer card on our website, call the church office at 656-0050, e-mail liz@ShilohBillings,Church, or tell the phone tree representative who contacts you.  We are checking all these sources every day and sending them on to the prayer group and to Pastor Tyler.

HELP US PRAY -True prayer is more than words.  It is an attitude of the spirit and mind that reaches out to God.  Prayer is a two-way process.  You tell God what you want from Him and He reveals to you what He expects from you.  Prayer is not a series of empty words, but rather an increasingly intimate relationship with the heavenly Father anda sincere desire to do His will.

SANDWICH MINISTRY – While the sandwich ministry is suspended, we would like to know of any other help we can provide.  If you know of an organization in need, please call the church and give us the information.

FOOD DRIVE – We will be holding a food drive on Saturday, May 2nd, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  The need for food for the Food Bank is great but during this time of higher unemployment and layoffs,  the need is even greater.  Lead Pastor – Tyler Amundson

My two primary responsibilities as a pastor are coaching leaders and creating community to help each of us see God in our everyday lives.  Shiloh is working with me to increase the interactions of people from different opinions and backgrounds.  We actively pray and work alongside God to create a diverse community to live out the love taught to us by Jesus in our daily practice. I hope you will join us as we work towards this vision of a beloved community working to spread God’s love to our community.

My personal passion for ministry is to all ages through preaching, teaching and organizing ways for people to find their connection with our community and God.  I find fulfillment in my work when I hear someone say, “I found God today.”  I encourage people to search for God on a mountaintop, in church, helping someone out, sharing in a small group, or in their own prayer life.

When I am not at work I enjoy playing with my family by growing our garden, going for bike rides or enjoying a great day in Montana.  My own personal interests involve exercise, parenting, biking, and being a computer nerd.
