Did you know the Gospel of Luke is written by the same author as the book of Acts?  Luke is the only gospel that carries a dedication to someone as the opening lines.  Luke also contains the most stories about women of any of the gospels.

This year I am challenging our congregation to read the Gospel of Luke.  In future years I will challenge us to read the other gospels together.  Reading the entirety of the books, helps us to know who Jesus can be in our lives and to know better the stories we are called to live by.  To help us do this. I would encourage you to read the chapters of Luke in the following progression.

Gospel of Luke Chapters by Month
February  1-3
March  4-6
April 7-9
May 10-11
June-July 12-16
August 17-19
September 20-21
October 22-23
November 24
December (Read something else in scripture)

As I prepare to be gone for the United Methodist General Conference in St. Louis later this month, reading chapters 1-3 has been helpful.  To remember that people anticipated Christ’s arrival, and that people were uncomfortable and nervous before Jesus came.  Additionally, it is good to read Jesus’ baptism to remember the strange character, John the Baptist, who blessed Jesus’ before his seclusion in the wilderness and his ministry.

I encourage you to pick up your Bible and begin reading Luke this month, let’s see how reading together draws us closer to each other and to God.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

A childhood incident has convinced Faith Horvath (Marisa Tomei) that her true love is a guy named “Damon Bradley”; but she flies to Venice where she meets a man of her dreams, Peter Wright (Robert Downey Jr.). But can they fall in love if she still believes she is intended to be with someone else?  Join us Sunday at 5:30 pm and find out.

AGING WELL– In partnership with Riverstone Health, the February Aging Well program will center on Life’s Decision Points-getting it all in order.  This may well be the conversation of a lifetime.  Please join us here at SUMC on Wednesday, February 13, NOON-1:30.  In a safe environment, we will talk over the paperwork conundrum, life’s wishes, advanced care planning, aging in place, hospice, and the benefit of a survivor’s guide.

Pastor’s Corner – Sunday, February 3, 2019

Starting February 10 in worship we are going to be studying the book of Philippians and how sometimes to live in community we have to give up things. We make compromise, we allow ourselves to be molded, and we trust God will work through tensions in our relationships. So, for this Pastor’s Corner I am giving up something. I have a consistent rule to not ask for things that I need personally as a pastor. I find as a leader I am called to offer insight and to give invitation to be together in our work. However, this month, in our Christian community I need something, I need your prayers.

The first thing I need your prayer for is for a weekend called “Chrysalis.”  February 8-10 I will be spending a healthy amount of time with High Schoolers at First United Methodist Church as a spiritual director. Chrysalis is a Christian spiritual and leadership development retreat for teenagers. It is modeled on the Walk to Emmaus and it is a powerful experience for those teams. In my role I will be praying, offering messages, and supporting these teenagers as they grow closer to God and each other. Keep us in prayer for a good weekend and pray that First UMC can get the teenager smell out sometime before spring.

The second item I need your prayers for is General Conference. February 21-27 I will be gone to the United Methodist Special General Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. This worldwide gathering is the only body that can speak officially for the United Methodist Church which includes churches in Africa, Asia, North America and Europe. There will be 864 delegates voting on a long held divide about the churches stance on human sexuality. This is challenging to say the least, but more so I think it will require deep prayer and the actions of the Holy Spirit. Please learn more about and/or watch the livestream at www.umc.org/gc2019I go to serve as the clergy delegate from our region. Please keep this entire gathering in your prayers.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

Our study series for January will be focused on Finding Joy In Real Life, we will explore 5 biblically based principles that remind us how living the Christian life can bring true joy and abundant life.  Click to watch the intro video.

Collaboration between churches is important.  This past week Shiloh helped organize a space at Evangelical UMC that helps with the Free Store food serving.  It is truly great to see our United Methodist Churches working together to serve our community.
