People of Shiloh –

It is a new year, and 2020 promises to be full of as many promises and great challenges as 2019. My prayer for our year is that we engage deeply in scripture, that we seek the ways of Jesus amidst the turmoil and tumultuous times our world will offer, and that we will seek God’s Holy Spirit in our work as a community of faith.

Last year I challenged our congregation to a new practice, reading a gospel each year. This year I encourage you to read the Gospel of Mark. Mark is the shortest gospel at just 16 chapters. This was the first gospel I read from beginning to end, and my favorite characters are the disciples in this gospel. The disciples in the gospel play the role of being clueless to the revealing truth of what Christ is really doing.

For us as readers the opening lines, quoted from the prophet Isaiah, make it clear. Jesus’ is revealing a love from God that invites people out of an exile, like the people in Isaiah faced, and back to an understanding they can and do live in the love of God each day, in God’s kingdom. Mark makes clear that God will provide enough for each day, and that God will call us from our wilderness into the promise he offers us.

Join us in reading Mark this year!

JANUARY WORSHIP – Let It Go: A Series on Forgiveness.  This January we will be exploring what true forgiveness looks like.  Jesus teaches us great ways to understand forgiveness, and it is not as easy as the old line “Forgive and Forget.”  Forgiveness takes practice.  We invite you to join us in learning forgiveness this January.

COFFEE WITH THE PASTOR – The first Coffee with the Pastor for the year 2020 will be Sunday, at 11:30 am.  This a great chance to learn more about the church.  Join Pastor Tyler in his office for a discussion and coffee.

406 YOUTH UNITED MIDDLE SCHOOL – Middle schoolers , grades 6-8, will meet the 2nd and 4th Sunday from 4-5 pm at Shiloh UMC . All meetings unless noted otherwise are at Shiloh UMC from 4-5 pm. We will be including some 5thgraders.  Please talk to Pastor Tyler about any 5th grader who is interested.

AGING WELL – Please mark your calendars for the Aging Well presentation on January 8 at 11:30 am.  We will hear from Josh Henderson of North 40 Physical Therapy.  All presentations are interactive, educational, and fun!  Everyone is welcome! RSVPs to the office are appreciated and assist us with our luncheon needs. We have the following programs scheduled:  Staying Engaged, Overcoming Social Isolation (Feb. 12); House of Books Author Event (Mar 11); Organ Donation (April 8); and Planting Pollinator-Friendly Gardens (May 13).

FAITH AND FILM – Join us on Jan. 12 at 5:30 pm as we watch a movie, have some discussion and see where God appears to us in popular movies. This month we will be watching Blinded by the Light.  In England in 1987, a teenager from an Asian family learns to live his life, understand his family and find his own voice through the music of American rock star Bruce Springsteen.  Bring a snack and a friend and join in the discussion after the film.
BOOK REVIEW – Join Shiloh’s Book Review for a discussion on The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek” written by Kim Michelle Richardson.  This historical fiction book is inspired the true blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the 1930’s Kentucky Pack Horse Library Program.  The book recounts the power of literacy to bring hope and learned tolerance to all. Come and join the discussion on Tuesday, January 14 at 6:00 pm.

“TWELVE ORDINARY MEN” – by John MacAuthur will be the new Adult Bible Study, starting on Sunday the 12th of January at 9:00 am.  This study dives into what we can learn from and about the Apostles.  The study will run through May 10th.  If you would like to join us, contact the office to order a book.

VISTATION MINISTRY – In the past, one of the Visitation Volunteers visited both hospitals every Monday- Friday.  The goal was to provide spiritual support for anyone from Shiloh who happened to be in the hospital.  Many options were available to the patient and/or the family: prayers, anointing, communion and support in general.  These same options continue to be available but a call must be made to the church to notify a member of the Visitation Team to go to the hospital (656-0050).  The Visitation Team has lost several members and currently the team is very small.  PLEASE call.  This is a very important ministry for all involved.

FREE STORE NEWS – The Free Store has just completed eight years of ministry to people in our community.  None of this could of happened without the support of the members of EUMC, Grace UMC, Shiloh UMC and Hope UMC as well as others who donate time and/or items.  Every first and third Saturday when the Free Store is open, many volunteers are needed:  those who conduct the church service at 9:30, the nursery attendant, three people who “manage the shoppers” (checking them in, managing the number of shoppers in the shopping area, and checking them out after shopping).  As many as 10 volunteers sort donations to replenish the spots already emptied while also bring empty hangers back to the sorting room.  A couple of men to help shoppers take their bags down the stairs and bring up new donations. The director problem solves when difficulties arise.  New volunteers are always welcomed.  Consider being a part of this powerful ministry.

SANDWICH MINISTRY – On the last Friday of every month the Sandwich making committee gets together and makes 200 sandwiches which they then take to the Mission.  After the December 27th the cupboard was bare.  They need peanut butter (plain), jams and sandwich bags. Both peanut butter and sandwich bags are now on sale at COSTCO if you would like to help with this ministry.

If you appreciate what Shiloh does, please consider giving to us financially.  You can give online at http://www.shilohbillings.church/give/  Thank you for supporting our work.
