Pastor’s Corner – Sunday, December 9, 2018

Romans 5:5 Common English Bible (CEB)
This hope doesn’t put us to shame, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

I would rather complain about my problems than fix them.  There it is, my confession.  I know in my heart of hearts that the best way to bring resolution is to let the Holy Spirit loose, because my needs will always seem the best way to solve any problem.  The gospel tells us something very different.  It tells us to “Love God and others” and then God’s spirit will transform the world.

I am an extrovert, which means the best way to fix problems must be to hash it out with whoever is near. God often disagrees.  Recently, at a retreat, I was given 1 hour of silence after each session.  This is an extrovert’s nightmare, and simultaneously God’s dream.  In the terror of silence offered to me I wandered to the lakeshore. I this sense of being asked to sit on a rock.  Not the most comfortable seat, but occasionally I can compromise, when God asks.

As I sat squirming in silence, I began to notice a shape in the water.  The rocks, liquid, light, and plants converged to form what seemed to be a hand laying open on the bottom of the lake.  In my fidgeting I had picked up a rock began to poor all of the thoughts around a problem in my life that I had not been able to complain away.  A problem caused by people, agitated by humans, and something terran knowledge would never be able to heal.  Quietly God invited me to place the pain filled rock in her fluidic hand.

I still think complaining about my problems is more fun, as I consider the Spirit’s silence.  This season of Advent as we wait for Christ, consider the opportunity to sit in silence as a spiritual practice.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

December 2018 – Newsletter

In December we will journey through Advent Season which is a preparation for the birth of Christ.  It is a time to open our hearts to what God might do when we create space for them to be born in the world.  The series is designed to help us look at Old and New Testament stories about what God calls us to be as people of God.  We hope you will join us and allow yourself to get placed by God as a character in the story.
