Generosity Corner – October 21, 2018

We ask that if you give regularly to Shiloh or have been considering giving, that you please take some time to prayerfully commit to our good work by completing a commitment to pledge.  These pledges help us to support you in faithful giving, and help us in planning wise use of our resources.  Cards can be found in the backs of the chairs at Shiloh or you can complete the online form below.  We ask that you return your pledge by October 28th on our final generosity Sunday.  You can place cards in the offering plate, mail them or fill them out online at https://www.shilohbillings.church/give/.

“Spirituality is not about being fixed; it is about God’s being present in the mess of our unfixedness. (Messy Spirituality)”          ― Michael Yaconelli

This is the third in our Generosity Corner series, to share where the listening sessions conducted in the summer of 2017 have resulted in ministry from our church.  I encourage you to read the October 7 message, for more information on how these insights were gathered.

A desire for our community was to reach “families with children.”  This stems from our roots of Sunday school” flowing out of every nook and cranny” when we had a smaller building.  It also is a value that fits our context and location, there are young families moving in to neighborhoods especially to the south and west of our church.  It will take work to reach young families, they have a large number of competing priorities to consider as they raise children. Some have never grown up in a church, and don’t know the value of spiritual community.  Some parents are working multiple jobs, or both parents work and need support to fit in family spiritual time.  Families won’t just show up, we are going to have to meet them. This is why our Easter Egg Hunt and Trunk or Treat will be so key as outreach opportunities.

In response we need to create family friendly spaces, and that is why we are launching Messy Church as a weekly activity.  We want to experiment with creating an alternative time and space for regular family worship. Messy Church is about families spending time together in a world where parents and children often participate in events separately.  We would love for you to come join us this week to see how Messy Church works. Also, invite families and children in your life to join you.  It is Messy because the kids get to participate in the service, people how they are, and we celebrate the mess of life we have been offered by God.  The service starts at 5:30 and by 6:05 we are sitting down for dinner.

Come join us this Tuesday, 5:30pm for Messy Church.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

SLEEPING BAGS AND WHITE SOCKS NEEDED! – During October, the Missions Team will be collecting money for sleeping bags for the HUB and Free Store. The bags are $44 each.  Please make the notation on the memo line of your check or envelope.  The HUB also needs white socks. There’s a container in the Fellowship Hall for those. Thank you for your support!

CONTRIBUTUON STATEMENTS – Your contribution statements are ready for you to pick up from your mail slot on the table in the entry way.  If you have any questions regarding your statement, please call the church office at 656-0050. To locate your statements and any other mail that may be waiting for you, look in the slot with the first letter of your last name.  Shiloh UMC continues to be a generous congregation and we thank you for your support.

TRUNK OR TREAT – One of our on-going goals is to increase the number young families attending Shiloh.  The annual Trunk or Treat event is an excellent outreach effort that provides an opportunity for others to become familiar with us. We would like a parking lot full of cars giving out candy from 5 pm to 8 pm on Halloween.  If you would like more information, please let Peg know (690-6370). There is a signup sheet on the easel in the lobby. Come and join the fun!  We can also use donations of wrapped candy and rinsed out 1 gallon milk jugs. Today after each service we are asking for help to make items for our Trunk or Treat event.  With your help we will be drawing faces onto gallon milk jugs that will become luminaries for the sidewalk.  The second project is to make dum-dum suckers into ghosts, which will be given out as prizes for one of the three games we will be having at the carnival.  Thanks for all of your help.

VETERANS – If you are a Veteran and served your country, please indicate on the friendship pad this morning.  Thank you.

PRAYER VIGIL – SUMC’s Prayer team will be sponsoring a Prayer Vigil on Friday November 2nd.  The church will be open from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. We all have hope that our country will come together in peace and harmony and with the election on November 6th, we felt this would be a good time to come into a peaceful setting and lift up your concerns and hopes to God. So please stop in, have a moment of prayer, and light a candle.

SONGS OF WORSHIP AND PRAISE – Dave Merkel, choir director at SUMC, has recorded an album of Songs of Worship and Praise. You can purchase the downloadable album for $25.00 at WWW.DAVEMERKEL.COM/SWP-FS.  $5.00 from each album purchased will go to The Free Store ministry.

FOOD BANK – The first Sunday of the month is Food Bank Sunday.  There is always a need for food and help but at this time of the year that need seems to grow.  If you are thinking of helping out the Food Bank this month, please think holiday meals.  Items such as canned veggies, cranberry sauce, stuffing mix, soups, potatoes, canned pumpkin, etc.  If you would rather make a donation, you can write a check to SUMC with Billings Food Bank in the memo line.

CARD SHOWER – We have been asked by the UMC Mountain Sky Conference to participate in a Card Shower for D.S. Deb Christine’s daughter who is recovering from major open heart surgery in Tucson.  This outpouring of love and prayers will lift both Deb and Kate’s spirits.   Cards can be sent to:     Kate McArthur

Aging does not need to be hidden or denied, but can be understood, affirmed and experienced as a process of growth by which the mystery of life is slowly revealed to us.
– Henri Nouwen

This is the second in our Generosity Corner series, to share where the listening sessions conducted in the summer of 2017 have resulted in ministry from our church.  I encourage you to read last week’s message for more information on how these insights were gathered.

One primary desire from our community was to serve people “like us.”  In other words, people knew we were a community of people who are on the “older” end of the age spectrum and we hope our church can offer something to those challenges they are facing.  Listening to this desire and also recognizing that many of our neighbors fit this profile, I have spent the last year as your pastor learning intimately the challenges, hopes and fears of people who are in the second half of their life.  The journey has been an amazing journey that has brought connections to all sorts of people in our community, seeking to do the same kind of ministry and work.

In this spirit we have launched our Aging Well program.  Designed to “enrich the gift of growing older.”  Last year we had a series of experimental lunches offering learning on a variety of topics around aging, and working to form a community of people interested in learning together.  It was a success, and this year we are continuing these programs.  We invite you to join us this week to see what “Aging Well” is all about.  On Wednesday, Oct. 17, we will have a lunch and learn time on nutrition.  This program will be sponsored by one of our missional partners, Highgate Senior Living, who is providing the lunch and program. Please come join us, no matter your age.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler
