Newsletter – March 2020

As human beings, we often do things that seem to make us feel isolated or cut off from relationships that help us.  In Christian history, leaders came up with seven examples that kept people from relationships with each other. More importantly, they felt it built a barrier in their relationship with God. What if we took the time to put those in a modern context? What if we look at where our culture has skewed those divisions for the good or for the better? Join us this Lent as we explore these things and how to use the radical understandings of Jesus to bring you deeper connection and meaning in your life.

People of Shiloh –
I can still remember my mentor and friend warning me, “Do not mix water with the ashes!”  I responded questioningly with a drawn-out, “Ok…”  My mentor in ministry was a Franciscan Catholic Nun who felt a call to preach.  As you can imagine there was not a lot of room in her tradition for her to use her skills.  Except in rural Montana where there was no Catholic priest.  She got the chance to preach more than a few times and every time people came away saying, “I wish you could preach more often.”
Ash Wednesday is coming up this week, February 26.  It is a day when we repent, recognize our lives are short in the cosmic reality and remember God breathed life into the dust of our being for a purpose.  Repentance is often associated with dispelling massive amounts of guilt, but I want to remind us it is really about letting go of anything that prevents us from turning to God and God’s purpose in our lives.  For my mentor, repenting in her life meant turning away from her vows and her birth tradition to pursue ordination as a United Methodist preacher.
On Ash Wednesday you can receive Ashes on your forehead as a mark of your repentance at Mazevo Coffee on Central and Shiloh from 10:30am-11:30am, City Brew from 3:30pm-4:30 pm. (We will also be making prayer beads at this location.), or we would love to have you join our shared Methodist Ash Wednesday service that rotates between our churches each year.  This year the service is at First UMC at 7 pm. (Childcare provided and a soup supper starts at 6pm).
I am thankful for this chance to turn in repentance with you on Ash Wednesday as we turn towards Lent and Easter.  I am also thankful that a Catholic Nun turned in repentance to her calling to preach, so that I do not burn the foreheads of those I serve with water and ash.
Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

DEEPER DIVE –BIBLE STUDY “Making Sense of the Bible”- The Bible is a sacred text that we hold in reverence as Methodists, but how do we understand it?  Pastor Tyler invites you to dive deeper into the text, to understand its origins, and where you might gain deeper understanding from it.  We will be using Adam Hamilton’s book Making Sense of the Bible.  Classes are held on Tuesdays and if that doesn’t work keep an eye out late in February for Sunday morning study 6 weeks before Easter. We meet at Mission Ridge Tues at 10:30 am, Feb. 25 and at Shiloh UMC Tues at noon, Feb 25. Books are $17.00 and you can get one in the office.

BOOK REVIEW – Join Shiloh’s Book Review for March 10 at 6:00 pm.  The book is “Marilla of Green Gables”written by Sarah McCoy. Plucky and ambitious Marilla Cuthbert is a 13 year old when her world is turned upside down.  Her beloved mother dies in childbirth, and suddenly Marilla must bear the responsibilities of a farm wife: cooking, sewing, keeping house and overseeing Green Gables with her brother and her father. Her one connection to the wider world is Aunt Izzy, who “escaped” to the city.  Marilla ventures beyond the safety of Green Gables and discovers new friends and new opportunities. Please join us for discussion on March 10 at 6:00 pm
TEXT GIVING – You can contribute to the ministries and missions of Shiloh UMC over your phone.  It’s easy! Text “give” to 406-412-2402.  The first time you do this, the system will reply with a text message containing a link.  Click on the link to open a web page where you will enter an amount (we suggest $1 for your initial donation), your name, home address, email address and your debit/credit card or ACH bank information.  Once you’ve completed this initial step, the system will respond with a text message indicating that you have successfully linked.  After the first time, you will be able to just text the amount you want to give in the following formats: “give $10” to give $10 right now; “give $10 weekly” to set up a weekly donation of $10. You can also use this option to give to special offerings (Student Day, Food Bank, etc.), pay for Bible Study books or pay registration fees for events, etc.  The church will pay standard fees for these transactions.
FREE STORE – Since September, the numbers of shoppers at the Free Store have continued to grow, which is good news.  However, during January, February and March when few garage sales are held, our donations really drop.  Consequently, we are currently very short on children’s and men’s winter clothing, linens, and household items.  If you have been planning on cleaning closets or drawers, this is a good time to donate some goods to the Free Store! As always we appreciate your support!!
