Pastor’s Corner – June 24, 2018

Join us for Worship!
Pastor’s Corner –
People of Shiloh,Last week in worship I shared that we received a $1,500 check from the CMYK Christian community that meets in the Art House Pub downtown.  Their Pastor Matt Blakeslee and I met upon my arrival in Billings, and meet every month to pray together and support each other.  CMYK gives 33% of their budget to the community and along with the check was a letter from Matt that said, “we are sending you this check because we believe you embody what it means to be church.”  Matt and CMYK love who we are and what we as people of God are doing on the west side of Billings.

This letter brought tears to my eyes, because it means people are taking note of Shiloh.  This gift, along with the amazing faithful gifts we each share with Shiloh, help us continue to dream with God how we share the love of Christ in our community.

God is working through us!

In the bulletin you will note that our giving is behind what we need to make our budget.  This is something I have been watching closely with our finance committee, Susan Hathaway, our Finance Chair, and Linda Stahley, our Treasurer.  When we set our budget last year we extended ourselves financially with hope of connecting new people to our congregation.  We did this knowing God was calling us to this outreach, and knowing we had faithfully prepared a reserve that could address the shortfall, if needed.  We have seen the fruits of our outreach in connections with new people and increased awareness in Billings of our church.  However, gifts are behind where they have been since 2013.  We believe factors contributing to this include the loss of membership to death, a pastoral transition, and that new people take time reach the same level of giving of long time members.

For now our request is that we each remain faithful in our giving and our prayers for Shiloh.  I, along with our finance committee, will be sharing more in the coming months about how we can shape our budget to continue to follow God’s call for our community of faith.

Enthusiastic Shalom,
Pastor Tyler

Many of us have been struggling with the separation of children from families and questions of immigration to our country.  On Sunday between services, Pastor Tyler will offer a 45 minute prayer and Bible reflection conversation on immigration in the fellowship hall from 9-9:45.  We want to provide a safe space for people to ask questions about the United Methodist stance on immigration and for people to understand each other’s struggles with the issue.

We ask that each of you talk with your coworker, friends, family and students ask them to please sign up to save up to 3 lives on July 12th.

Pastor’s Corner – July 1, 2018

People of Shiloh,

As we enter this July 4 week, I know people enter it with a mix of emotions.  I have heard from the people in our congregation spanning the political spectrum of concerns for our country.  Concerns for the morals of our people, a sense that things are more dangerous than they have ever been, and anxiety for our future.

A few years ago I was asked to give the invocation at Constitution Day at our Montana State Capitol.  Prior to the prayer I shared that Ben Franklin proposed at the constitutional convention that prayer be said each day.  He didn’t do it to promote one religion or way of faith.  Instead, he hoped that God’s divine providence might help overcome the delegates petty differences.

The convention turned him down, because they could not afford a chaplain.  To which I would remind politicians in this day,and I would assume of Franklin’s age, that pastors would gladly do this at no charge.

As the fireworks go off on July 4, I would ask that as people of faith you would pray a prayer. “God be with our nation, and the nations of the world this year.  May we lean toward peace, may we practice grace, and help me as an individual to listen to my neighbor with whom I disagree.”  It is my prayer that each of us at Shiloh find ways to overcome political differences to start building our communities up, and to find ways to stand together for the rights and prosperity of all people.

On July 15thwe will start a sermon series called Unafraid to address some of the growing fear in our country.  I encourage you to come to worship a few times between July 15 and August 12, and especially connect to the sermons on our website or podcast when you are away. http://www.shilohbillings.church/sermonslisten/

Enthusiastic Shalom,
Pastor Tyler
