April 22, 2018 – Pastor’s Corner

Invitation to Sunday Worship
As a part of our new contact system and database at the church we are asking all members and friends of Shiloh to fill out a contact form.  Please take a few minutes and fill it out here: https://shilohbillings.breezechms.com/form/0c17d1

Please be aware our church is being used for the Yellowstone Conference Middle School Retreat this weekend.  The facility will be unavailable for other groups to use from Friday afternoon through Saturday night to help us maintain Safe Sanctuaries.  Thank you for your generosity in creating safe places for young people to connect with God together.

Pastor’s Corner –

People of Shiloh –

There is a story of a young boy who is being bullied by an older boy.  The older boy each day comes to school with a new insult for the younger one.  Eventually the little boy misses school and the older boy doesn’t know if he will remember the insult, so he writes it down in his notebook.  The next day the little boy is gone, and the little boy is not around for a whole week.

Then the younger boy returns and the older bully walks up to him, and the little boy holds out his hand.  The older bully stops, and asked in a befuddled voice, “What are you doing?”  The young boy says, “I have been sick for a week, and guessed you had been writing down your insults, so you could remember them.  Can I just have them in written form because my head still hurts?”  The older boy doesn’t know what to do and doesn’t like being caught in the act, so he says without thinking, “No, I didn’t, but I am glad you are feeling better.”

This Sunday we will be exploring the sense of bullying and lack of civility that seems to have arisen in our culture in media, politics, religion, local government, and even around our family gatherings.  These realities are not new to history.  Jesus faced them in his own time and this Sunday we will use our scriptures from the series and Jesus’ skills to explore how we as Christians can respond to bullying and uncivil behavior in our modern world.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

P.S.  If you have an old phone, cell phone, chorded phone that we could use for the altar next weekend, please drop it by the office this week.  We are looking for

Work will continue for the next couple of weeks. Watch for more information about this project in the May newsletter.

SMALL GROUP PRAYER AND STUDY – Tuesday, April 24th, Pastor Tyler will be leading a small group study to accompany the Broken sermon series.  The group will practice prayer, share in conversation, and end with a love feast every time.  It will be offered twice each Tuesday at 12:00 pm and 5:30 pm from April 17 – May 22.  The book we will be using is Everything Happens for a Reason and Other Lies I’ve Lovedby Kate Bowler.  If you need a copy of this book, let the office know and we will order more books.  This book tackles the topics of faith couched in a question “Why do bad things happen?”  Please contact Pastor Tyler or the office if wish to attend this study.

BROKEN – In April and May we will journey through a sermon series called Broken. This series will explore broken places in our world.  We are going to see how others have found hope amidst those challenges. We are not just seeking hope that brings ecstatic joy, but the tempered joy of knowing God.  To help make this series something you are part of creating too, we would like to invite you to bring something you own that was broken and you have fixed or repurposed.  We may use this in slides, video or for the altar.

SHILOH COMMUNITY GARDEN – We have a community garden.  We have a few spots left and anyone can rent a spot for $50.00.  Please contact the office if you are interested. This a chance to help feed both your family and our community.

EASTER EGG HUNT – The success of our first ever community Easter egg event can be measured many ways:  by the 342 registered children and accompanying adults that attended, by the very flexible parents who understood the situation, or perhaps by the number of “newbies” who may attend service at Shiloh for the first time after Saturday.  However, the most important measure for me is the support given by the people of Shiloh UMC, whether donating eggs/candy, serving on the committee responsible for the planning and preparation of the activities, being one of the 40 + volunteers who came Saturday for two very busy hours.  Each of you is so appreciated.  Thank you.  Peg Parker, Chair of the Children and Youth Ministries Committee.

SHILOH PRAYERS – Tuesday we will be holding a prayer group where we will remember all the people who were lifted up in prayer today.  We will meet at 11:30 am every Tuesday in the sanctuary and share prayer together.  This prayer time will last about 30 minutes and it is a great time to take a break from your busy week to take a deep breath and give yourself a chance to recharge and connect with God.

KEYS FOR THE CHURCH Do you have keys to the church?  If you have any keys to the church, please either call the office (656-0050) or email the information to Pam (pam.d@shilohbillings.church) as soon as possible.  Thanks in advance.

LAWN MOWERS NEEDED(and that means people) – Can you help mow the lawn this summer?  Now that the snow is gone, it is lawn mowing season.  If you can help mow the church lawn, please sign the clipboard in the Fellowship Hall or call the office with the dates you are available.  It takes about 4 hours and training is available.  Thank you so much for your help!!!

COOKIES NEEDED – Thank you to everyone who has signed up to sponsor a Sunday Fellowship hour.  We still need to keep some cookies on hand and the cupboard is really bare.  We can also use cookies to send with the sandwiches on sandwich making Friday.  If you are going to make cookies, please make an extra dozen or so for the church.  Thank you so very much!!

Pastor’s Corner –

People of Shiloh,

We are Easter People.  This is the time of year when we get to explore what it means to be people who bear the burden of hope to the world.  After the Easter fanfare is over this season involves us exploring what to do with the exciting and yet surprising news that Jesus lives beyond the moments of Black Friday.  Exploring this means looking to some of the dark places of our community and wondering, like the disciples, where is God’s joy amidst the pain of life.

Walking with Christ and living the understanding of resurrection is not easy.  It involves a commitment to hope that hangs itself on the mystery of God’s unfolding love.

We will be searching for places to hang our hope in April and May through a sermon series called Broken.  This series will explore broken places in our world and we are going to seek how others have found hope amidst those challenges.  This hope is not hope that bring ecstatic joy, but the tempered joy of knowing God.  As C.S. Lewis phrases his explanation of Joy, “It was valuable only as a pointer to something other and outer.  When we are lost in the woods the sight of a signpost is a great matter(Surprised by Joy).”
I don’t promise this to be an easy journey, and yet I know God is present in the steps we will take together.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler
