People of Shiloh,
In my ongoing spiritual work, I am loving the book When the Heart Waits by Sue Monk Kidd.  One of the spiritual notions she shares is about the need to let things emerge by waiting in God’s time.  The way you can’t rush a caterpillar out of a chrysalis.
I have experienced moments of waiting.  The support of someone in pregnancy is my deepest experience of this.  For men all we can do is support the pregnancy by caring for the mother.  I always found it odd notion that we say women have a “glow” during this waiting period.  Perhaps it is our hope for the mother to have peace and enjoy the miracle of new life growing in her belly.  However, I remember the “glow” phase as a mix of pure joy, some subtle peace, and moments of terror too.  Phone calls on the health of the baby from the doctor.  Learning the gender. Feeling the kick. The dreaded car seat purchase, you do not want to not spend a fortune, but you don’t want junk either.  The fear of “Who am I to be a parent?”
I wonder if sometimes we think of spiritual waiting periods as much more  of a “glow” experience than they really are.  Waiting can be just as much a rollercoaster as the actual experience of bringing something new into this world, just a little less intense.
Being told by a spiritual mentor that Pastors are like midwives, I am always trying to discern when we as a community are in the waiting and gestation phase.  Waiting for something God is adding to our community life.  Other times, I wonder when it is time to engage the chaos and work to support the birthing God’s new gift of life.  A process that is noisy and chaotic and scary and challenging for all involved.
Where are you at personally in this spiritual waiting?
Are you waiting or birthing or assisting new life being born right now?
Is our church, the collective community, in some phase of this process?
Let me know,
Pastor Tyler

FREE STORE – As winter approaches the shoppers are focused on acquiring bedding, especially blankets, comforters, etc.  At this time the shelves are virtually empty.  All sizes are needed: twin, double, queen and king.  Additionally winter coats are already in demand.  One September 7th, 77 families visited the Free Store while on September 21st 83 families shopped.  All this happened in a matter of two and a half hours each Saturday.  Clearly there is a need for this ministry supported by the Methodist churches in Billings. Thank you Shiloh UMC for your commitment and support!
GOODIES AND COOKIES, PLEASE! – The freezer is not as empty as it has been thanks to all of you who have answered our plea.  But the need is always there so please remember the church when you are making cookies please remember us.
