February 25, 2018 – Pastor’s Corner

Pastor’s Corner –
This week we continue our study of the “I Am” statements shared in the Gospel of John by focusing on when Jesus said, “I Am the Bread of Life.”  Satisfaction is something that is hard to find, we think a meal widll satisfy and then we find ourselves hungry soon after, or we think something will fix our problem only to find it leaves us aching still.  This “I Am” statement draws us to question and explore how God can fulfill our needs through us seeking to live by God’s guidance each day, to trust and to follow even when it seems what God is offering won’t satisfy.
As a part of our worship Sunday we are going to be invited to offer relief to the people of the Blackfeet Parish and reservation.  This winter has been hard on us, but it has hit that region of our state doubly hard.  People are trapped in their homes without food, firewood or connection to medical resources.  The United Methodist Committee on Relief has approved Bishop Karen Oliveto’s request for a $10,000 grant to support our relief efforts there.  Even still the work is hard and teams are going out to isolated homes to find out if people are starving, suffering or even still alive.  Please hold the teams in prayer as this is scary and challenging work.

Pastor Dawn Skerritt of Columbia Falls UMC is our disaster coordinator and she is working in partnership with Pastor Calvin Hill of the Blackfeet Parish to organize the relief effort.  We are collecting the following items this Sunday in church or they can be delivered to Grace UMC between 3-5pm Sunday.  Canned/pantry items, formula, gallon zip lock bags, diapers, grocery bags and other non-perishable foods.  You can also donate at yacumc.org/donate or place  check/cash in the offering plate Sunday marked “BUMP Relief.”

Let’s work Sunday to be the hands and feet of Christ and bring the “bread of life” to our brothers and sisters in need.

Enthusiastic Peace,  Pastor Tyler

In the Gospel of John, Jesus gives us the “I Am” sayings, meaningful metaphors such as “I am the bread of life” and “I am the light of the world,” to reveal his mission and purpose. One by one, the “I Am” sayings of Jesus not only grab our imagination about Jesus’ identity, they also help us to experience God, who spoke the first “I am” to Moses. Join us for this insightful worship and study series as we learn more about the God we can know and as we seek to answer Jesus’ question to us, “Who do you say I am?”

February 18, 2018 – Pastor’s Corner

A message from our Pastor –

As I write this Pastor’s corner, I am sitting in a coffee shop, offering Ashes to friends and strangers.  Meanwhile, images on the television show news about a school shooting in Florida.   A man next to me just bemoaned the seemingly consistent school gun violence and 4 teenagers sit at a table enjoying each other’s company acting oblivious to the drama playing out on the wall behind them.

This is the complex world we live in involves the sacred colliding with the everyday, pain bordered by moments of joy, and our Christian life in lent calls us to repent amidst the continued pace of life.  Repentance goes beyond giving up something, it is the act of getting out from under life and getting to know God again, it is about finding God’s voice to call you to the next step of your life.

To accomplish this as a church we will be studying the “I Am” statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John because Christ used them to help people understand God amidst the collision with their everyday lives in the first century.  There are several ways you can participate this season in this exploration as we journey with Jesus to the cross.

First, join us Sunday for worship and sermons.  Each week will focus on a different aspect of God’s character.  You can always catch up on sermons at www.shilohbillings.church/sermonslisten/, go online and download our app, or if you need a printed copy contact the office.

Second, you can join me, Pastor Sarah Beck from Grace or Pastor Wendy from Evangelical in a group study on the book for our series.  I will teach an in-person class at Shiloh UMC at noon Tuesdays and It is also offered online.  Let Pastor Tyler know if you want to connect online.  Pastor Wendy is offering one at Evangelical UMC Wednesday at 6pm and Pastor Sarah at Grace UMC at 7pm Wednesday.

Join us this Lent,

Pastor Tyler

A DAY AT THE FREE STORE – FEBRUARY 3, 2018 – A worship service (optional) was held at 9:30 am, prior to the store opening at 10 am.  Our own Pastor Tyler led the service.  A Valentine toy give-away for the children was held due to the generous donations of Valentine motif stuffed animals throughout the year.  A little boy, grinning ear to ear while holding a stuffed bear as big as he is, brings joy to him and the volunteers! A Birthday Bag, containing the items needed for a birthday cake and party is given to a child celebrating her 4th birthday.  These are provided by Dale Francetich, co-director of the Free Store and a member of Grace UMC.  In the 2 ½ hours the Free Store is open, 51 families shopped.  As each checked out, the soup mix assembled by our membership is available to take home.  Nearly all finished their visit with a free hot chili lunch donated, cooked, and served by the SUMC ladies!  Thanks to each of you for your support for this life-changing ministry.
