January 28, 2018 – Pastor’s Corner

A message from our Pastor –

Please take the gifts and talents survey located here, we are currently working to get our committees and teams filled for our coming work of reaching people with God’s Love:
https://goo.gl/forms/pe2Blq1Rr16O0eY92

This Sunday we will have one of our Aging WeLL programs right after church.  And I know you are looking at that first sentence wondering why both Ls in well are capitalized.  Because it visually makes a well in the word.  Our hope is that we can draw on the wealth of knowledge in our community to reach our congregation and our community with facts about healthy aging, including healthy spirituality into all ages of life.

In Isaiah 64:4 it reminds us that our God supports us through all the years of our lives.  In our country aging has become something that sometimes brings shame, as if we should apologize for it.  Aging is perception though especially as the World Health Organization redefined aging categories to the following:
• 18-65 years old: youth/young people
• 66-79 years old: middle-aged
• 80-99 years old: elderly/senior
• 100+ years old: long-lived elderly
We know that by 2057 Women’s life expectancy will be 100 and men will be there soon after.  Our conversation as a church should not be about lifespan of our people in their spiritual and physical lives, but instead our role now is about health-span support.  How can we improve the quality of life of the people with God’s love in our community?  We know this from Christ’s call to offer abundant life.

In our sermon Sunday we will talk about a roundabout located inside of Highgate Senior Living, our neighbors across the street.  And after 10:15 church I would invite you to the Aging WeLL program on Long Term Care Insurance and VA Benefits, and to invite friends to Grace UMC on Tuesday night 6pm for another repeat of the popular program Demystifying Dementia (Free Dinner on Tuesday).

I hope you will join us in this work,
Pastor Tyler

Bible Study Scriptures for the week – Ephesians 6:13-17, Mark 1:21-28

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

No signup necessary for this group.  Please join us in the sanctuary.

AGING WELLWe are continuing our work with Highgate Senior Living to bring programs to those in our community who want to Age Well. Today, after 10:15 service, we will cover Long Term Care Insurance and VA Benefits in the Fellowship Hall.  On January 30th, we will hold an encore session of Demystifying Dementia. A free dinner will be provided by Highgate Senior Living. It will be held at Grace UMC, 1935 Avenue B, at 6:00 pm.

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS – Your contributions statements are ready for you to pick up from your mail slot on the table in the entryway of the church.  If you have any questions regarding your statement, please call the church office at 656-0050.  To locate your statements and any other mail that may be waiting for you, look in the slot with the first letter of your last name.  Shiloh UMC continues to be a generous congregation and we thank you for your support.

UMW TEA – Ladies, here is your chance to share time with other women of the church and give Crystal Amundson a chance to learn a little about us. The United Methodist Women are putting on a tea from 2-4 pm on Saturday, Feb. 3.  And while you are waiting for the event, put your thinking cap on, we will each be sharing something about ourselves that we think no one else knows!  Let’s have some fun together.  See you there!!

FELLOWSHIP HOUR – We are trying something different this year with our Fellowship Hour. There is a calendar located in the kitchen where you can sign up to sponsor Fellowship Hour on a Sunday.  We will need a sponsor for every Sunday of the month, except the third Sunday.  Sponsors would bring cookies or whatever they would like to bring and fruit or veggies and set up the Fellowship Hour for that Sunday.  You do not have to stay and cleanup. Kelly Martinson will be sponsoring today’s Fellowship hour. If you have any questions, please contact the office at 656-0050.

FREE STORE 2017 – A Year at the Free Store: there were 1,222 family visits for an average of 53 each Saturday.  Of the 1,222 families, new families comprised 26.5% of the families (325).  No advertising is done so those learning about the Free Store are hearing about it through word-of-mouth.  As the Free Store begins its 7th year of Ministry, none of this would be possible without the support you and others have given, as well as the time and energy given by the many volunteers.  THANK YOU SO MUCH!

FREE STORE NEEDS: Currently we have no clothing for children sizes 2T-5T, both boys and girls.  Other shortages include kitchen items, heavy clothing and boots for men and women and any type of bath and bed linens. There is a tote in the Fellowship Hall labeled “Free Store” where you can leave your donations.  Thank you so much for your continued support.

SUMC HISTORY – The History Team is looking for voices from those who were involved with United Methodist Youth Fellowship (UMYF) from April 1986 through last year.  If you would like to add your voice to Shiloh’s History, please contact Norma Smith at umwnsmith@bresnan.net.  The questions we would address are: (1) When were you in MYF? (2) Why were you a part of it? (3) What did you learn from MYF that you carry with you? (4) Tell of an experience(s) that was memorable for you!  We appreciate the help.  We would like enough voices and stories to actually put UMYF in its own chapter. If you have children who were involved, we would appreciate you passing the request on to them.

FOOD BANK SUNDAYSunday, Feb. 4th is the first Sunday of the month and is also Food Bank Sunday.  The “giving season” is over but the need for food at the Food Bank is never over.   They need individual meals, peanut butter, jelly, baby food, canned soups, veggies, fruit, personal items, laundry soap, and even cans of pet food.  If you would rather give money, you can write a check to Shiloh UMC and put Food Bank on the memo line.

MESSY CHURCH – Messy Church will be on Monday, February 5th at 5:15 pm.  We will begin with a light meal, a Bible story, The Man who helped from Luke 10, followed by a discussion and then off to the craft tables.  We end the evening with a closing prayer.   We are done well before 7:00pm and have a blast!  Find some kids to share the evening with; it’s a great ministry and lots of fun.

Come join us as we partner with God!

January 21, 2018 – Pastor’s Corner

A message from our Pastor –

As a Christian community, we come together each week to remind ourselves of God’s opportunities for action, for rest, and for everything in between.  This Sunday I will be addressing something that God has called and brought to the core of Shiloh’s roundabout, “everyone having a place at the table.”  We believe everyone in worship should be empowered to serve through Shiloh’s ministry, we hope you will take this survey with diligence, prayer, and hope of what God might be doing through your life.

“If you don’t ask, you will never know.”  This phrase is one that I remember daily as a pastor serving God’s people.  God daily provides opportunities for us to be in prayer, to study scripture, to serve and to witness to our faith. Daily, I am made aware of places people could change the world.  However, as a pastor I cannot take each of these on myself.  I pray over these daily and seek ways to provide you all a way to pray over them, and then we are called to ask which ones we can serve God by partaking in the work.

At different times in our lives we find callings to share our gifts in different ways, last weekend Cassie King reminded us of this by saying, “God does not always call the equipped, but God equips those who are called.”  This Sunday we are attempting to see where you are being called to serve through our work as Shiloh.  We will ask you to take a “Gifts and Talents Survey” online or in worship on paper.  Here is my prayer for this work, that no one marks just one thing on the form.  Instead, I hope you pray over the form and then mark all the areas you have felt any nudge by God to possible work on.  We won’t call on you to do everything you mark, but our leadership needs ideas of people who feel that sense God is calling them to offer gifts and talents. Please take the gifts and talents survey located here:

HUMAN RELATIONS SUNDAY – Turn on the news, drive around the outskirts of your town and you will find what Jesus called “the least of these.”  Those people living in the margins of society, struggling to survive.  Over and over Jesus served people like this, embracing them.  And that’s what we want to model as the people of the United Methodist Church.  To continue the ministry of Jesus we established Human Relations Sunday (today).  This calls all of our churches to participate in helping God’s children realize their potential. Please plan on giving today.

GOD HUNGER – Join us for lunch or just-in-time prayer, you pick.  Prayer time begins at 11:30 am on Tuesdays and is followed by brown bag lunch with Pastor Tyler and preparing meals for homeless in Billings.  This prayer time invites people to journey with Pastor Tyler in meaningful mid-day meditations. The program is called Demystifying Dementia and will be at Grace UMC, 1935 Avenue B, at 6:00 pm.
