October 22, 2017 – Pastor’s Corner

A message from our Pastor –

Each week I will share a Pastor’s Corner or a member of our congregation will write a message.  These will come out on Friday of each week and will include reminders of the topic for Sunday Worship.  We hope this ministry brings blessings to you wherever you are on life’s journey.

Most days I get to the office between 9 and 9:15. Almost every day I have seen a man walking along Shiloh Road with a walker right when I arrive.  The man is Mike and he shared with me that he walks by every day because he is recovering from a stroke, and this is one way he is doing Physical Therapy to overcome this challenge in his life.

Who are our neighbors?  As I prepared to serve you all I did some demographic research.  To our north and east is primarily a population of adults 55+.  This should probably not surprise us with Highgate, St. John’s and other senior and assisted-care facilities near us.  To the west and south of us are a population of people under 55 and many are either families or soon to be starting families.

Over the summer, you all did work with Rev. John Pugh to explore where we might be called to serve and go as a congregation.  Working to include more young people and families was clearly a priority.  We will be working to welcome young families and children into our church as we work together.

We also have an older(perhaps I should say “wiser”) congregation and it is clear that our neighborhood reflects this, so I would like to invite us to consider how we might serve our 55 and older neighbors.  One way I am going to invite us to do this is on November 8, at noon.  Highgate assisted living is going to partner with us to bring a program called Lunch & Learn: Demystifying Dementia to our congregation, a free lunch will be included.

I would like to invite you to let your friends and neighbors know about this event.  And our hope is to have more events on different topics in the future.

I believe church is one of the last places that brings people of all ages together and I look forward to seeing how God will help us reach all people young, old, and everyone in between.

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

Worship on Sunday – Half Truths: “God Said It, I Believe It, That Settles It”

There are several phrases that are associated with the Bible, phrases that are said at different times in our culture to evoke faith, and yet they are not in the scriptures anywhere.  Each of these phrases has the power to both endear people to our faith and frighten others away.  Over the next 5 weeks we will be exploring some of these phrases, seeking God’s presence in them, and dispelling the pieces of them that cause harm to others in the faith journey.

Worship begins at 8:00 am and 10:15 am on Sunday and childcare is provided.

Reminders for the Shiloh Community

Choir practice starts at 9:00 on Sunday.

“Animate” (Adult Bible Study) will be held at 9:00 am in the Education Wing.  This is an
multi-media class that focuses on seven aspects of faith: God,
Religion, Jesus, Salvation, the Cross, the Bible and the Church.

Our Annual Harvest Dinner will start about 11:15 am (after 2nd service)
with lots of seasonal foods to enjoy.  Everyone is welcome!

The Caregivers Support Group meets Tuesday at 1:30 pm.

“God’s Hunger” will continue at 11:30 am on Wednesday, this time of prayer and contemplative reflection is for all people.  We meet for 30 minutes and then people can join us for a brown bag lunch afterwards.  If you are looking for a moment of silence and focus on God, join us.

Sandwich Making will begin at noon on Friday.  We will make 200+ sandwiches to be distributed to Family
Services and the Rescue Mission.  This team will also be stuffing a mailing for Shiloh UMC, help us serve our community and church.  Pastor Tyler will be joining too.

October 15, 2017 – Pastor’s Corner

A message from our Pastor –

As I get to know each of you and we enter into our time of ministry together, it seems appropriate to introduce my family to the congregation.  Crystal and I each consider our lives a calling and we also find parenting a calling.  As we work with the people of Billings and Shiloh we will each be seeking ways to serve in the places God calls us, and we hope to support others in doing the same.

Crystal, my amazing spouse of 10 years, is a mental health counselor.  She primarily serves children under the age of 12.  We each work hard to split our work week to each serve the community.  She will be practicing her therapy in town as well as serving various non-profits in her work.  Crystal also provides training and supervision in the field of play therapy, so others can become licensed to serve children in their communities.

As we get settled into Billings, Crystal and I will be balancing work schedules, and support our family.  We have two young daughters, Corinne(7) and Quincy(4).  Corinne is in elementary school and Quincy attends pre-school.  You will often see each of them at meetings and various church activities.  I encourage you to introduce yourself to them, and if you give them a little time, they will probably ask who you are too.

Family is an important part of our life, and as a family we work hard to serve the community we are a part of.  Our whole family is thankful for the gracious way Shiloh UMC has welcomed us to Billings, and we look forward to prayerfully working together to share Christ’s peace, hope, love and joy in our Billings community.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler
