March 4, 2018 – Pastor’s Corner

Pastor’s Corner –
Dear Friends,
Lent is one of my favorite seasons in the church. It is a time in the early church that was designed specifically for preparing new people to the tradition, to learn, study, and envelope themselves in understanding why they were called to the Christian life. All of their work and development culminated with a baptism on Easter Sunday to demonstrate resurrection into a new life.
In the 21st century, it has become a time of re-engaging our faith. As your pastor, I invite you to continue to seek ways to engage in a new spiritual practice this season. Perhaps you would like a simple text message reminder; you can sign up for reminders by texting Lent2018 to 797979. Another great practice to begin is to listen to our sermons online, when you miss a Sunday by going to, sign up for the podcast or download our app. By staying connected to Shiloh, you can create positive habits to pull you back to your faith in the busy-ness of life.
I hope you will continue to deepen your faith this season as we journey toward the cross, Shiloh, and that glorious Easter morning. We hope you will join us during Holy Week to complete this journey, information can be found online and in the monthly newsletter.
Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler

Bible Study Scripture for the week – John 7:2,14; 8:12

Reminders for the Shiloh Community

Worship on Sunday – The God We Can Know
Watch the sermon series video here:

In the Gospel of John, Jesus gives us the “I Am” sayings, meaningful metaphors such as “I am the bread of life” and “I am the light of the world,” to reveal his mission and purpose. One by one, the “I Am” sayings of Jesus not only grab our imagination about Jesus’ identity, they also help us to experience God, who spoke the first “I am” to Moses. Join us for this insightful worship and study series as we learn more about the God we can know and as we seek to answer Jesus’ question to us, “Who do you say I am?”

MESSY LENT? We are “messing up” Lent this year! Messy Lent will start at 5:15 pm on March 5 in the sanctuary.  We will start with worship and a couple of old church camp songs.  Then we will have several prayer/activity stations to help focus on the work of Lent… wait until you see what they are… they will be really fun!! Eventually, we will eat, tell a story and end our Messy Church blessing!! Please come and join us!
FELLOWSHIP HOUR – The Fellowship Hour this morning is sponsored by Sally Thompson.

LENTEN STUDY – Join us for Prayer time which begins at 11:30 am on Tuesdaysand is followed by brown bag lunch with Pastor Tyler. Beginning at noon, Pastor Tyler will be leading a Lenten Study on the “I Am” Sayings. The book for this study is available in the office for $8.00.  So come for prayer from 11:30 am – 12 noon, or just come for the Lenten Study and lunch, the choice is up to you, but please plan on joining us on the journey.
“I AM” SAYINGS – This is the third week of a new sermon series. We are studying the “I Am” sayings of Jesus in the scriptures.  This is one that is great to tap into questions about the character of not just Jesus, but of God, as we are told by our fore-bearers in the tradition that we can know.  Please join us for the series through worship and bible study.  A class is also offered at noon on Tuesdays by Pastor Tyler, which is also available on-line.  Pastor Sara at Grace UMC will offer a class on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm and Pastor Wendy at EUMC will offer one on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm. We encourage individuals to attend the one that works best for you and to contact the church office to sign up where you plan to attend.
SAFE SANCTUARY TRAINING There will be a Safe Sanctuary training session on Tuesday, March 6th at 6:00 pm.  Pastor Tyler is offering this training for all people who will be serving children or youth in our church.  If you think you will serve them now or in the future, please attend.  Sign up by calling the office or email Pastor Tyler.
AGING WELL Aging Well has two presentations this week.  Elder Abuse will be held Wednesday at 12:15 pm and Normal and Not Normal Aging will be held Thursday at 11:30 am.  A lunch will be served both days.  After Thursday’s lunch, memory screening will be available.
FAITH & FILM The movie on March 11th at 5:30 pm is What Dreams May Come.  After Chris Nielson (Robin Williams) dies in a car accident, he is guided through the afterlife by his spirit guide, Albert (Cuba Gooding JR.). His new world is beautiful and can be whatever Chris imagines.  Even his children are there.  But, when his wife, Annie (Annabella Sciorra), commits suicide and is sent to hell, Chris ignores Albert’s warnings and journeys there to save her.  Upon arrival, Chris finds the rescuing Annie will be more difficult that he’d imagined.  Run time: 1 hr. 54 mins.  Rated: PG.  Release date: 1998.
RELAY FOR LIFE – SUMC will sponsor a team for Relay for Life again this year.  Pat Montgomery has agreed to be our new team leader.  Our team has already begun to form and we will have our first meeting on March 11th at 11:30 am.  Contact Pat Montgomery at home, 655-3507 or Liz Stanhope at the office at 656-0050.  We hope you can join us.
