February 4, 2018 – Pastor’s Corner

A message from our Pastor –

This Sunday in worship we will be continuing on our “Road to Shiloh.”  This Sunday’s focus will draw us into the challenges facing the church in reaching people with God’s love, specifically the new generations of Christians we all want to see.  I will be sharing with our church how Jesus took on the challenges of feeling overwhelmed by the questions of how to share God’s love and to draw closer to God even in the midst of the busy life humans lead.

As a part of the sermon I will be sharing two personal stories of members in our congregation.  I think it is important to let you know that I share stories like this with permission from those who have shared them with me.  My belief is that people’s stories are theirs to tell and that if I get the opportunity to share them, it is their choice to have someone do that.  If I have ever ask you, “Can I use that in a sermon?”  I am serious, but please know you can also tell me no, or ask for time to pray about that opportunity to share that story.

One story is about the challenge that exists for many people to even cross the threshold of a church entry, but the power when it happens.  The person shared this in her story, “And there it was!! Unsuspecting, I’d received the “golden ticket” – an invitation from someone who BELONGED! It was like being invited to join a special club!”

The other story I will share is about the power someone in our congregation has recently found her calling to make a difference in the world through prayer.  She shares this in her story, “God is good.  God is listening.  I am thankful.”

I am in awe of the way God is calling us in prayer, and in person to share God’s love in the world.  God is calling each of us, as Cassie King say, “God does not call the equipped, he equips the called.”

Enthusiastic Peace,

Pastor Tyler

BIG GAME DAYCome and join the Youth for a Big Game Day party.   We will start at 4:30 pm and cheer for your favorite team either the New England Patriots or the Philadelphia Eagles.  (Sorry Bronco fans.)  Bring a snack to share and join us for the Big Game.
MESSY CHURCHMessy Church will be on Monday, February 5th at 5:15 pm.  We will begin with a light meal, a Bible story, “The Man Who Helped” from Luke 10.  Followed by a discussion and then off to the craft tables. We end the evening with a closing prayer.  We are done well before 7:00 pm.  Bring some friends to share this fun evening with; it is a great ministry and a lot of fun.
GOD HUNGER – Join us for lunch or just-in-time prayer, you pick.  Prayer time begins at 11:30 am on Tuesdays and is followed by brown bag lunch with Pastor Tyler and preparing meals for homeless in Billings.  This prayer time invites people to journey with Pastor Tyler in meaningful mid-day meditations. No signup necessary for this group.  Please join us in the sanctuary.
FELLOWSHIP HOUR – Today’s Fellowship Hour is sponsored by the Shiloh UMW.
CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS – Your contributions statements are ready for you to pick up from your mail slot on the table in the entryway of the church.  If you have any questions regarding your statement, please call the church office at 656-0050.  To locate your statements and any other mail that may be waiting for you, look in the slot with the first letter of your last name.  Shiloh UMC continues to be a generous congregation and we thank you for your support.
FREE STORE NEEDS – Currently we have no clothing for children sizes 2T-5T, both boys and girls.  Other shortages include kitchen items, heavy clothing and boots for men and women and any type of bath and bed linens. There is a tote in the Fellowship Hall labeled “Free Store” where you can leave your donations.  Thank you so much for your continued support.
SUMC HISTORY – The History Team is looking for voices from those who were involved with United Methodist Youth Fellowship (UMYF) from April 1986 through last year.  If you would like to add your voice to Shiloh’s History, please contact Norma Smith at  The questions we would address are: (1) When were you in MYF? (2) Why were you a part of it? (3) What did you learn from MYF that you carry with you? (4) Tell of an experience(s) that was memorable for you!  We appreciate the help.  We would like enough voices and stories to actually put UMYF in its own chapter. If you have children who were involved, we would appreciate you passing the request on to them.
AGING WELL – We continue our work with Aging Well to invite folks of all ages to learn from experts in our community about different aspects of aging. People are living longer lives.  Feb. 18th will be Normal and Not Normal Aging at 11:30 am, right after church.  Learn what is normal in aging and signs of other aging conditions to watch for, especially around memory.  On February 20th, memory screenings are available at the church from 1-3 pm.  Please sign up on February 18th at our event.
ASH WEDNESDAY – Shiloh has a great tradition in Billings sharing in Ash Wednesday’s service with our United Methodist brothers and sisters.  This year the Ash Wednesday service will be at Hope UMC, at 244 Wicks Lane in the Heights on Wednesday, February 14h.  Choir will meet and eat at 5:30 and then practice at 6:00 pm. The service begins at 7:00 pm with food served at 6:00 pm.  Childcare is provided and Pastor Tyler will share in the preaching with Pastor Kama from First UMC.  We hope you can join us!
HEARING ASSISTANCE – We have acquired some new headphones for our assisted hearing devices.  They are located on the tables at the back of the sanctuary.  Please help yourself!  Let the ushers know if you need assistance.
