Shiloh E-Pistle for June 25, 2020

We hope you join us this June as we explore Hope: Living with Confident Expectation.  We will explore how hope is the foundation for faith, not a plan, but where we begin from.

People of Shiloh,

In the Gospel of John, chapter 3, is a wonderful story about a man named Nicodemus who comes to Jesus.  I was listening to a description of this encounter the other day and I wanted to share some thoughts.  Nicodemus is a leader of his people, and a rule follower too.  He is a prominent public figure in Jesus’ day.  The gospel says that he comes to Jesus in the night, which, in the descriptive symbolic language of John, means he came in a time of not knowing God or he is hiding his fear of not knowing.

Jesus says to him upon his arrival, “I assure you, unless someone is born anew, it’s not possible to see God’s kingdom.”

Nicodemus, the one who is expected to know it all, responds by asking if it is possible to enter the womb again.  Showing that this rule follower and public figure struggled deeply with metaphor.  He was too literal.  Nicodemus couldn’t understand what the spiritual rebirth would mean, and I think many of us struggle today with this understanding of what Jesus called us to.

If you read further in this scripture you come across a familiar passage.  One that has been used for a long time in our tradition to make us exclusive.  A passage that has been used to say, “To get to heaven you have to know Jesus and if you don’t then you are going somewhere bad.”  Instead if we look at the symbolic language of the passage we should see that it reminds us to find heaven here and now, and for eternity we are called to do that by be loving the Christ, the embodiment of grace and love Jesus brought to us.

The grace of Christ comes in the knowledge that God did not come to judge us, but to offer us life.  It is in the text of John 3 and the metaphor of rebirth.

Take some time this week and study this passage.  Send me some questions so we can have a dialogue.  And enjoy these beautiful God given summer days.

Enthusiastic Peace,
Pastor Tyler
