Shiloh E-Pistle for Thursday, August 13, 2020

People of Shiloh,

This coming week we will be looking at the character of Job from the Bible.  This story is trying to answer a theodicy, “An attempt to answer questions about where God is when our lives get taken apart.”  There is something stunning about Job though, as a story broken down you can discover several different theodicies.

In this letter I want to focus on one of them, “Nothing you can do will earn you God’s favor.”

You may be thinking, “Wait a minute pastor!  Then there is no incentive to do good.  It is by doing good that God blesses our lives more and more.”

How I have wished this to be true in my own life, and how many I have seen search after this certainty.  As an author I value greatly on this subject, Kate Bowler puts it, “I wanted God to make me good and make me faithful, with just a few shining accolades along the way.  Anything would do if hardships were the only detours on my long life’s journey.  I believed God would make a way.  I don’t believe that anymore.”

The prosperity gospel is the theodicy that Kate Bowler has invited us to step away from.  Her invitation is to step into something that John Wesley the founder of Methodism learned in his life.  He learned through suffering that reading scripture, learning about God, knowing God through spiritual practice, and living with the faith of Christ in God everyday that we will simply know the love that is there for us.  We will know that love even when we suffer.

That doesn’t go on a billboard very well, but the more I read Job and live the faith.  The more I know that faith is not about a tidy cleanup of the world.  Faith will be forever messy.

 Grace and Peace,

 Pastor Tyler

Free Store News – Although the Free Store is closed due to the pandemic, a partnership has been established with Broadwater School (located across the street from the Free Store). What happens when our world falls apart? How do we press onward when our tightly- knit plans unravel into loose threads? What do we become when our identity—or the path we’re on—comes undone? What if all of this is not the end we fear it will be? In our unraveling, sometimes life surprises us with unexpected joy, love, and hope— with a new beginning we couldn’t have imagined.

Sometimes we need God to unravel us, for we long to be changed. This worship series explores 9 stories of unraveled shame, identity, fear, grief, dreams, and expectations. These are stories where God meets us in the spiraling, unraveling our plans—and us—into something new.

COVID-19
We continue to monitor the situation as Montana opens in phases. Because we are committed to the health and safety of all, especially our most vulnerable of God’s children.  In Phase 2 we will be shifting to a model of online and small group worship, intermixed with parking lot worship. Please check back for updates and be sure to join us online for our weekly worship services.

Our Covid-19 protocol and building use guidelines can be found here: www.shilohbillings.church/covid-19/

Updates on worship be posted to www.shilohbillings.church/summer-worship-2020/
