Shiloh E-Pistle for Thursday, July 16, 2020

People of Shiloh,

In comments from people I sometimes hear, “I feel bad praying for myself, it feels selfish.”  Please don’t feel this way.  If you are always praying for yourself and if it is always about being rich or perfect, then we should talk.  My hunch is that most of you pray for yourself when seeking guidance in a difficult decision, hope in despair, peace in chaos, or courage in the storm.

In case you want to know if it is ok to pray for yourself, Jesus often prayed for himself.  In the stories of temptation in the desert, prayers in gethsemane, and throughout his time on earth he would step away to pray to God.  And not always for others.

Take some time this week and pray to, with or in conversation with God.  Include something for yourself.  In these challenging times we live in, it can be of great help to remember God goes with you.

If you don’t know where to start, use this beautiful Celtic prayer seeking God’s protection.

Enthusiastic Peace,

 Pastor Tyler

Circle me, Lord.

Keep protection near

And danger afar.

Circle me, Lord

Keep hope within.

Keep doubt without.

Circle me, Lord.

Keep light near

And darkness afar.

Circle me, Lord.

Keep peace within.

Keep evil out.

(A prayer of David Adam)

Peggy Parker shared this poem with us:

We fell asleep in one world and woke up in another.

Suddenly Disney is out of magic, Paris is no longer romantic, New York doesn’t stand up anymore, the Chinese wall is no longer a fortress, and Mecca is empty.

Hugs and kisses suddenly become weapons, and not visiting parents and friends become an act of love.

Suddenly you realize that power, beauty and money are worthless, and can’t get you the  oxygen you’re fighting for.

The world continues its life and it is beautiful.  It only puts humans in cages.  I think it’s sending us a message.

“You are not necessary.  The air, earth, water and sky without you are fine.  When you come back, remember that you are my guests.  Not my masters.”

Open Air Church at Luccock Park – Luccock Park UMC Camp (Paradise Valley) will hold Open Air Church on July 19 (10:30 am) and August 15 (11:00 am).

What happens when our world falls apart? How do we press onward when our tightly- knit plans unravel into loose threads? What do we become when our identity—or the path we’re on—comes undone? What if all of this is not the end we fear it will be? In our unraveling, sometimes life surprises us with unexpected joy, love, and hope— with a new beginning we couldn’t have imagined.

Sometimes we need God to unravel us, for we long to be changed. This worship series explores 9 stories of unraveled shame, identity, fear, grief, dreams, and expectations. These are stories where God meets us in the spiraling, unraveling our plans—and us—into something new.

We continue to monitor the situation as Montana opens in phases. Because we are committed to the health and safety of all, especially our most vulnerable of God’s children.  In Phase 2 we will be shifting to a model of online and small group worship, intermixed with parking lot worship. Please check back for updates and be sure to join us online for our weekly worship services.
