 The Story…

On May 14, in prayer and dialogue, our Church Council discussed and discerned what worship should look like over the summer in light of COVID-19. The challenge we prayerfully tackled is that even in Phase 2 of reopening, many of our congregation fall in the most vulnerable and are encouraged to avoid large groups. Prior to the meeting, I spent time studying other congregations across the country, and in our local area and praying with our scriptures. Jesus calls us to care for one another and all creation, I asked our leaders to wrestle with this call as we considered next steps.
The primary thing I heard from our leadership was a hope to find ways for meaningful connection with God and one another, and a desire to involve even the most vulnerable. Based on this understanding, the Church Council has asked that I develop a model of small groups, online worship, and parking lot worship to help us grow our faith this summer.
We will not have worship in our sanctuary as a large group until we head into the fall.

Here is the plan…

The model we are going to use to worship this summer is rooted deeply in the ways the Methodist church started sharing the gospel in our region, and the ways Methodism has transformed our community over the past century and a half.
In other words, we are going retro, going back to the basics, or going old school. Our worship in the parking lot will be drive-in style and happen about once a month. Online worship will continue to be shared each week, and sent out to those who need it by CD or DVD.
The small groups will be designed by groups who are at higher or lower risk from COVID-19, and will be limited in size and the time they meet to allow us to disinfect the space. Each group will receive a message to go along with the worship theme of the week, have scripture, prayer and discussion. For parents with kids, we will be looking at organizing in a slightly different way.
To better understand how you might choose to participate in church activities this summer, we ask you to fill out the attached form. Regardless of how much you will participate we need you to fill this out to understand how to include you in growing your faith this summer. This information will tell us how we can best connect you to our community of faith this summer.
Please fill the form out by Pentecost, May 31.
